Hyundai Santa Fe 2016 Review

Currently, there are many choices in Malaysia's seven-seater SUV market, but models that balance practicality, space performance, and cost-effectiveness remain the core demand for family users. The 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe public, as a mid-sized seven-seater SUV under the brand, has been one of the popular options in this segment thanks to its spacious three-row design, balanced features, and mature powertrain. This time, we got a chance to test this vehicle, with the main goal of verifying its actual performance in daily family scenarios - is the space really enough, is the power smooth enough, are the features practical, and does it meet the driving needs of family users?
In terms of exterior design, the 2016 Santa Fe public follows a steady and grand design approach, with overall squared-off lines that align with the positioning of a mid-sized SUV. The front features Hyundai's signature hexagonal chrome grille, flanked by irregularly shaped headlights that include halogen lighting (xenon optional on some higher trims). Once lit, they deliver decent recognizability. The lower front bumper has a simple air intake design, with round fog lights on both sides. The overall front fascia avoids excessive complexity, giving off a solid and dependable impression. The side profile is highlighted by a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, paired with 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels (18-inch for higher trims) that maintain a harmonious and proportionate look without appearing bulky. The rear features horizontally positioned tail lights connected by a chrome strip, visually broadening the rear width. Silver skid plates and hidden exhaust pipes under the rear bumper add to the steady design, aligning with the aesthetic preferences of family users.
Stepping inside, the interior emphasizes practicality, with a symmetrical layout for the dashboard. The upper portion is covered with soft-touch materials, which, while not overly luxurious, offer decent tactile quality. The central display is 7 inches (5 inches for lower trims), supporting Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone mirroring. The operating logic is simple, and its response speed is average within the segment. The instrument panel uses traditional mechanical dials with a monochrome LCD in the center, displaying essential information such as fuel consumption, speed, and mileage, which are easy to read. The seats are available in either fabric or leather (depending on the trim). The front seats offer manual or electric adjustments, and the padding of the backrest and cushion is fairly thick, ensuring long-term comfort without significant fatigue. The legroom in the rear rows is remarkable, with a 175cm-tall passenger having around two fists of space between the knees and the front seatback, and about a fist and a half of headroom without feeling cramped. The third-row seats are better suited for children or short trips for adults, with relatively tight legroom, but they are sufficient for emergency use. In terms of storage space, the front door panel storage slots can hold two water bottles, the center armrest console is quite spacious, and the rear door panels also have storage slots. Additionally, there are air vents and USB charging ports in the rear, enhancing practicality. The trunk space in the seven-seater configuration is limited and can only accommodate a few carry-on suitcases. However, folding down the third-row seats significantly expands the trunk capacity, making it more than adequate for long family trips.
In terms of power, the 2016 Santa Fe public is equipped with a 2.4L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 171 horsepower and a peak torque of 225 N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic/manual transmission. During daily driving, the power output is relatively smooth, with no noticeable jerkiness when starting, and the acceleration is very linear. When switched to sports mode, the shift logic of the transmission becomes more aggressive, and the throttle response quicker, providing ample power reserves for most overtaking situations. The chassis features a combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort. When facing bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most of the minor vibrations, and the body doesn’t exhibit significant jolting. In corners, body roll is well-controlled, the steering wheel’s weight is moderate, and the directional precision is impressive, giving a solid and stable feel.
In terms of fuel consumption, we tested it over a week under mixed driving conditions, and the average fuel consumption was around 9.5L/100km. In urban driving conditions, the fuel consumption is slightly higher, approximately 11L/100km, while on highways, it can drop below 8L/100km. This fuel consumption performance is within the normal range for mid-size SUVs in the same class. As for noise control, the vehicle is very quiet when idling, and while driving at high speeds, some wind and tire noise is noticeable but does not affect normal conversations among passengers inside the car.
Overall, the 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe public is a mid-size seven-seater SUV that is very suitable for family users. It offers excellent space, practical configurations, smooth power delivery, and fuel consumption within an acceptable range. Compared to competitors in the same class, it is more affordable and has a higher value-for-money ratio. If you are a family user who values practicality and cost-effectiveness and needs a car that can meet daily commuting and family travel needs, the 2016 Santa Fe public is definitely a great choice. It doesn't include too many flashy features, but every feature is practical and well-suited to fulfilling the needs of family users.
