Jaguar E-Pace 2021 Review

The luxury compact SUV market in Malaysia has become increasingly competitive in recent years. Consumers desire brand prestige but are unwilling to compromise on space practicality and features. The 2021 Jaguar E-Pace aims precisely at this market segment, retaining the sporty DNA of the brand while optimizing space and features to meet the needs of family users. In this test drive, we will focus on its performance, daily practicality, and sense of luxury to see if this vehicle can carve a unique niche in its class.
From a distance, the overall design of the 2021 E-Pace continues Jaguar's family design language. The front features a large honeycomb grille with chrome trims around the edges, providing high recognizability. The sharply styled LED headlights have a clear internal structure and deliver an outstanding visual effect when lit. The flowing lines along the sides of the vehicle run from the front fender to the rear, paired with 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels that maintain the SUV's powerful look. At the rear, the LED taillights feature the signature "double L" design, echoing the front lights. A silver skid plate is added below the rear bumper to enhance the off-road vibe. The overall exterior design strikes a balance between sportiness and solidity, meeting the aesthetic expectations of target customers for luxury compact SUVs.
Inside the cabin, the E-Pace's interior design leans towards simplicity. The center console is wrapped in soft materials and adorned with silver trims, offering a refined tactile experience. A 10-inch touchscreen serves as the centerpiece of the interior, with a clear interface layout, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless connectivity, and operates smoothly. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster can switch between different display modes and shows information such as navigation and vehicle status. The seats are made of genuine leather, with electrically adjustable and heated front seats that offer good support. The rear seats are equipped with independent air vents and USB charging ports, making daily use convenient.
In terms of space, the dimensions of the E-Pace are 4395mm×1984mm×1649mm, with a wheelbase of 2681mm. The front row offers ample space. For a 175cm tall passenger adjusting their seating position, there is a fist’s distance of headroom available. In the rear, there is approximately two fists of legroom and four fingers of headroom, sufficient for everyday family use. The trunk has a standard capacity of 484 liters, which can be expanded to 1141 liters by folding down the rear seats, providing ample space for large luggage and demonstrating good practicality. Furthermore, the interior features multiple storage compartments, such as the center armrest box and door pockets, convenient for storing small items.
In terms of performance, the E-Pace tested this time is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum output of 249 horsepower and a peak torque of 365 Nm, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. In normal driving mode, the initial response is smooth, the acceleration process is linear, and there is sufficient power reserve in the mid-to-high range. Pressing the accelerator hard during overtaking provides a noticeable push-back feeling. When switched to sports mode, the transmission shifts more aggressively, the engine operates at higher RPMs, and power delivery is more direct. Regarding handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal slack. The suspension system uses a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned towards sportiness. When cornering, body roll is well-controlled, offering good stability. On bumpy roads, the suspension effectively absorbs vibrations, maintaining some road feel while ensuring comfort.
In the fuel consumption test, we drove approximately 50km each on city roads and highways, with the air conditioning running throughout. The average speed was 35km/h, and the displayed fuel consumption was 8.9L/100km, which is in line with the average level of vehicles in the same class. In terms of braking, the brake pedal feels linear, the braking force is evenly distributed, and the vehicle maintains a stable posture during emergency braking. The braking distance from 100-0km/h is about 38 meters, which is a good performance. Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise become slightly noticeable at high speeds, but it remains within an acceptable range. Overall, the quietness aligns with the positioning of a luxury brand.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2021 E-Pace lie in its brand image, sporty handling, and balanced spatial practicality. Compared to competitors such as the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, the E-Pace has an edge in power performance and handling, as well as a more comprehensive configuration level. It is expected to have a certain competitive edge in pricing. This vehicle is suitable for family users who value the driving experience and pursue brand quality. It can meet the needs of daily commuting and weekend outings. If you are looking for a compact SUV that combines luxury and sporty performance, the E-Pace is worth considering.
