Jaguar F-Pace 2021 Review

In recent years, the competition in the luxury mid-size SUV market has become increasingly fierce. Most brands are constantly upgrading their configurations and designs in an attempt to break through the homogenization. Jaguar, as a representative of the British luxury brand, has established its market presence with the sporty genes of its F-Pace model since its launch in 2016. The 2021 F-Pace Public version, which was test-driven this time, focuses on the "balance between sportiness and practicality," with key selling points including the upgraded Ingenium powertrain, optimized chassis tuning, and newly added intelligent driving assistance features. This article will provide a comprehensive evaluation from static design to dynamic performance and daily practicality to determine whether it can have a unique advantage among its peers like BBA models.
The exterior design continues Jaguar's signature sporty style, with a large blacked-out honeycomb front grille, paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides. The headlights integrate dynamic turn signals, giving them a high degree of recognition. The side profile is fluid, with a waistline running from the front fenders to the rear of the car, paired with 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels to create a low, sporty stance. The rear design is simple and crisp, with a dual exhaust layout and diffuser decorations enhancing the sense of performance. The LED taillights feature a smoked treatment, echoing the front-end design. Overall, the 2021 F-Pace Public version retains the family design language while enhancing the youthful and sporty vibe through detailed blacked-out elements, aligning with the contemporary luxury SUV aesthetic trends.
The interior adopts a "driver-centric" layout, with the center console angled 7 degrees towards the driver for ease of operation. In terms of materials, the top of the center console is covered with soft-touch plastic, while the inner side of the door panels is trimmed with genuine leather and metallic accents, offering a premium tactile feel. The 11.4-inch floating center screen features the latest Pivi Pro Intelligent Infotainment System with a clean and smooth interface. It supports Apple CarPlay/Android Auto wireless connectivity, and its voice control can recognize both Malay and English commands, offering good practicality. The seats are wrapped in Windsor leather, with the front seats supporting 14-way electric adjustment and heating functions. They provide excellent lateral support, making long drives less fatiguing. The instrument cluster uses a 12.3-inch fully digital display, with three modes to switch between: Classic, Sport, and Navigation, presenting clear and intuitive information.
In terms of space, the 2021 F-Pace Public version measures 4746×1936×1667mm, with a wheelbase of 2874mm, which is average in its class. The front row offers ample space, with a 180cm tall passenger having about a fist of headroom after adjusting the seat. The rear legroom is about two fists, and the headroom is about one fist. The floor's central hump is relatively low, so the middle passenger's comfort is not significantly compromised when fully loaded. In terms of storage capabilities, the front central armrest box has a large capacity, accommodating five 500ml water bottles. The door panel storage slots can hold phones and water bottles. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 650L, which can be expanded to 1740L when the rear seats are folded down, sufficient for family shopping and long-distance travel needs. The trunk also features a hidden compartment at the bottom for tools and private items.
The power system is equipped with a 2.0T Ingenium four-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 250PS and a peak torque of 365N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. During actual driving, the power response in the starting phase is quick, with minimal turbo lag, and gentle throttle input provides a smooth acceleration experience. Acceleration in the mid-to-late stages is strong, and when overtaking at speeds of 80-120km/h, the transmission downshifts actively, and power is readily available. There are four driving modes: Comfort, Sport, Eco, and Adaptive. In Sport mode, throttle sensitivity is enhanced, the transmission remains in lower gears, and the exhaust emits a subtle sound, enhancing driving pleasure.
Handling and chassis tuning are traditional strengths of the F-Pace. The steering system is highly precise with minimal dead zone, and the steering wheel feels stable during high-speed driving, providing ample confidence. The chassis features a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension setup, tuned for sportiness while maintaining a certain level of comfort. When passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively filters out vibrations, keeping the vehicle stable with no obvious residual oscillations. During cornering, the suspension provides excellent lateral support, vehicle body roll is well-controlled, and cornering limits are high. The four-wheel-drive system is full-time AWD, with a default front-to-rear power distribution of 50:50 for daily driving, and it can transfer up to 90% of power to the front or rear wheels in case of slippage. Although the off-road capability is not on par with hardcore SUVs, it can handle light unpaved roads with ease.
In terms of fuel consumption tests, the fuel consumption in urban congested conditions is about 10.5L per 100km, while it drops to 7.2L per 100km during highway cruising, with an overall average of about 8.8L per 100km. This performance is moderate for a 2.0T AWD SUV. In brake performance tests, its 100km/h-0 braking distance is approximately 38 meters. The brake pedal offers a linear feel, and braking force is stable, with no significant heat fade observed after multiple applications. Noise control is excellent, and at a speed of 120km/h, interior cabin noise mainly comes from wind noise, while tire and engine noise are effectively isolated, allowing normal conversation without raising the volume.
In summary, the 2021 F-Pace Public version's core strength lies in its balance between sporty handling and luxurious feel. Compared to its counterparts, such as the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, it offers better power specs, more engaging chassis dynamics, and a more fluid Pivi Pro system compared to BMW iDrive 7 and Mercedes-Benz MBUX. Its shortcomings include fuel consumption slightly higher than its competitors and limited rear space. In terms of target audience, it is suitable for young family users who value driving experience or individual consumers seeking the sporty DNA of a luxury brand. As Jaguar's mid-size SUV, the 2021 F-Pace Public version, with its unique British sporty style and balanced product attributes, secures its place in the homogeneous market, making it a distinctive and practical choice in the luxury mid-size SUV segment.
