Jaguar F-Type 2019 Review

In the local luxury sports car market over the past three years, the choice of V8 supercharged models has gradually been shrinking, with many brands shifting towards small-displacement turbocharged or electrified routes. For enthusiasts who seek the pure thrill of large-displacement exhaust notes and driving passion, the 2019 Jaguar F-TYPE R Convertible remains a highly appealing option — not only does it retain its 5.0-liter V8 supercharged engine, but its soft-top convertible design further enhances the driving enjoyment. This time, we got our hands on a test car, and the main purpose is to evaluate the actual performance of this classic sports car in daily driving and intense handling, to see if it still meets the dual demands of performance and style for today's consumers.
From a distance, the overall lines of the 2019 F-TYPE R Convertible still maintain Jaguar's signature "dynamic" stance: the low front, high rear body proportions paired with a short front overhang convey a strong sense of sportiness even when stationary. At the front, the large honeycomb grille is surrounded by black decorative trims, and the "J"-shaped daytime running lights in the LED headlights are highly recognizable; two raised hood lines extend from the A-pillar to the front grille, further emphasizing a muscular feel. On the side, the 20-inch shiny alloy wheels paired with red brake calipers are very eye-catching. The waistline runs from the front fender to the rear, matching the rear diffuser and quad exhaust layout. The overall design avoids excessive decorative elements, with every detail serving the vehicle's aerodynamics and sporty positioning.
Opening the car door, the interior features black leather as the primary color, complemented by silver aluminum trim panels, creating a calm and luxurious ambiance. The center console is designed to tilt towards the driver, and the 8-inch touchscreen is equipped with the InControl smart system, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with operational smoothness that meets the mainstream standard of the time. The steering wheel adopts a three-spoke leather-wrapped design with a firm grip and a heating function, while the left-side shortcut buttons allow direct control of the driving mode and cruise control system. The seats are sport-style with electric adjustment, providing adequate lumbar and thigh support, ensuring comfort even during extended drives. In terms of storage space, the central armrest box can hold two mobile phones, and the door panel storage compartments can fit water bottles, which is sufficient for a two-door sports car.
Sitting in the driver's seat, a passenger with a height of 175 cm has a fist's space of headroom, and the front legroom is spacious. Due to its two-door design, the rear seats can only accommodate backpacks or small items and are not suitable for adult passengers. The trunk has a capacity of 310 liters, which is enough to fit two carry-on suitcases, meeting the luggage needs for daily short trips or weekend getaways. The car is also equipped with dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear air-conditioning vents (though of limited practicality), USB charging ports, and other basic configurations sufficient for daily use.
In terms of power, this car is equipped with a 5.0-liter V8 supercharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 550PS and a peak torque of 680N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. When switched to Sport mode, the throttle response becomes extremely sharp. During takeoff, the rear wheels may exhibit slight slippage, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 3.9 seconds. During overtaking, the transmission downshifts promptly, delivering power on demand, with the push-back feeling sustained through the high RPM range. For daily commutes in Comfort mode, power delivery becomes smoother, with the transmission upshifting proactively and keeping the RPM below 2000, avoiding excessive aggressiveness.
Driving performance is one of the highlights of the F-TYPE R: The steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and the road feedback during cornering is distinct; the suspension adopts an adaptive dynamics system, where the comfort mode filters out most small bumps, while the sport mode becomes noticeably stiffer, significantly improving support and keeping body roll well-controlled during turns. The chassis tuning leans towards sportiness but isn’t overly rigid, ensuring that daily driving on city roads doesn’t feel bumpy. The braking system performs excellently, the brake pedal travel is short and linear, and the vehicle remains stable during high-speed braking without nose-diving.
In terms of fuel consumption, we tested under mixed road conditions (50% city + 50% highway), achieving an average fuel consumption of about 14.5 liters per 100 kilometers. In congested city roads, it increases to around 18 liters, while highway cruising reduces it to about 11 liters, which is considered normal for a large-displacement V8 engine. As for noise control, with the soft-top closed, the cabin provides good sound insulation, and wind and tire noise are within an acceptable range during high-speed driving. When the top is opened, conversation inside the car remains unaffected at speeds below 80km/h, but higher than 100km/h might require raising voices.
In conclusion, the core strengths of the 2019 Jaguar F-TYPE R Convertible include its pure V8 supercharged power, precise handling performance, and classic convertible design. Compared to competitors like the Porsche 911 Carrera Convertible in the same class, its price is more affordable (the starting price of the 911 Carrera Convertible was about RM 1.2 million at the time), and its power specs are more advantageous. However, Jaguar is slightly at a disadvantage in terms of brand premium and resale value. This car is suitable for those who pursue the thrill of a large-displacement engine roar, enjoy the fun of convertible driving, and don't mind a slightly higher fuel consumption—whether it’s for weekend mountain drives to enjoy performance or daily commuting with occasional street theatrics, it can fulfill your needs.
All in all, the 2019 F-TYPE R Convertible is a sports car that "stays true to its core." It hasn’t compromised on power for the sake of fuel economy or emissions but instead insists on using a V8 supercharger to deliver the most primal driving excitement. If you love driving, value performance and style, and have a budget of around one million ringgit, this car is worth considering.
