The current mid-to-large luxury SUV market is highly competitive. Consumers not only demand brand quality but also value space practicality and driving comfort. As a regular contender in this segment, the 2020 Lexus RX returns with updated design details and configuration adjustments. This time, we got the 2020 Lexus RX test drive car, mainly to see if it can meet the comprehensive needs of family users in terms of space, handling, and fuel consumption while maintaining its luxury positioning.

In terms of exterior design, the 2020 RX continues the family-style spindle grille, which is slightly larger than the previous model. Paired with L-shaped LED daytime running lights, it is highly recognizable. The side profile of the car features smooth lines, with the roof sloping gently downward from the B-pillar, creating a coupe-like silhouette. The 20-inch alloy wheels have a dynamic design and are well-proportioned with the body. The rear adopts through-type LED taillights, which extend the visual width when lit at night. The overall rear design is simple yet not monotonous, in line with the refinement expected of a luxury brand.

Stepping into the car, the choice of interior materials exudes sincerity, with soft leather covering the dashboard and inner door panels. The detailed stitching enhances the sense of luxury. The 12.3-inch central control screen is large enough, with a clear interface layout, and supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity for smooth daily operation. The front seats come with electric adjustment and heating functions, offering thick padding and adequate lumbar support, making long drives less tiring. The rear space performs well; with a wheelbase of 2790mm, a passenger of 175cm tall seated in the rear has about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom to spare. The low floor hump ensures middle-seat comfort. In terms of storage space, the front and rear door storage compartments can hold large bottles of mineral water. The center armrest box offers sufficient depth, and the trunk provides a regular capacity of 453 liters, which can be expanded to 1329 liters by folding down the rear seats, easily meeting the loading needs for family trips.

In terms of power, the test vehicle is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum output of 175kW (238PS) and a peak torque of 350N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, the throttle response is linear, the start is smooth, and the turbo engages promptly when the accelerator is deeply pressed. Acceleration in the mid-to-high range is strong, providing enough confidence for overtaking. Gear shifts are smooth with the transmission, and shift jerks are almost imperceptible. The chassis uses a front MacPherson and rear double-wishbone suspension, tuned for comfort. When passing speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most of the jolts, and the body exhibits no excessive movement. The steering precision is moderate with minimal play, making daily handling flexible and easy, even for female drivers.

During the fuel consumption test, we drove 100km each on urban congested roads and highways, with a combined fuel consumption of about 9.2L/100km. For a mid-to-large SUV, this figure is slightly above average in its class. Noise control is excellent, with wind noise and tire noise barely noticeable during highway driving. The cabin remains quiet, further enhanced by the Mark Levinson sound system, providing a comfortable riding experience.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2020 Lexus RX lies in its balance—luxurious interior materials, spacious space, smooth power delivery, and comfortable chassis tuning—all designed to meet the needs of family users. Compared to other competitors in the same class, such as the BMW X5 or Mercedes-Benz GLE, the RX has a more affordable price while retaining competitive features, offering outstanding value for money. It is suitable for families who value luxury quality, need large cargo space, and care about fuel efficiency. It can handle daily commutes or weekend family outings with ease.

In summary, the 2020 Lexus RX is a well-rounded luxury midsize SUV with no obvious shortcomings. Whether it’s space, luxury, or driving experience, it can meet the needs of most family users. If you are looking for a low-profile yet quality family SUV, it is worth considering.

Last week, I took my family to Genting. Just as we started the mountain road, we encountered heavy rain. The RX's V6 engine climbed effortlessly, and the body remained stable like it was glued to the road during turns. However, the touchpad on the center console is indeed a bit user-unfriendly; it takes quite some effort to adjust the air conditioning. But the LSS+ system is truly worry-free, as the automatic braking and lane-keeping functions helped me avoid several lane-cutting cars. As for the exterior, the spindle grille looks even more imposing in the rain, but the rear design feels a bit lacking in refinement.

Driving on the highway in a rainstorm, the steering wheel feels like it's part of my hand, and changing lanes to overtake is so smooth I feel like singing!

Last week during the rush hour in Kuala Lumpur, stuck in the traffic on Jalan Ampang, it suddenly started pouring rain. Fingers brushed across the wooden trims on the center console, the texture felt so warm and refined that it didn’t feel like being inside a car. Looking up, raindrops splashed on the spindle grille, without diminishing its sharp aesthetic at all. The leather seats provided just the right amount of support, making even a half-hour jam feel less tiring. This full score for both the interior and exterior truly withstands the test of Malaysia's weather and road conditions.

Every time I sit in the car, it's like being gently wrapped, the leather texture and wood grain details make even traffic jams less annoying~

Every day when stuck in traffic, the support of this seat really saves my back! When queuing at the highway toll station, three friends in the back row can still stretch their legs. It's just that even at the lowest air conditioning setting, you still need to put on a light jacket under the afternoon sun—it's really that cold!
