Mazda CX-30 Review

In Malaysia's B-segment SUV market, value for money has always been a key consideration for family users and first-time car buyers. With the update of the 2023 Mazda CX-30 series, the entry-level 2.0G 2WD Standard version is priced at RM 131,409 and comes with features such as 7 airbags, Head-Up Display, and keyless entry, surpassing entry-level vehicles in the same class. This makes many consumers curious: As the base model of the series, can it meet daily needs in terms of design, space, and practicality? This review will focus on the static experience and dynamic performance of this car to see if it can become the "well-rounded choice" in the B-segment SUV market.
From the exterior, the 2023 CX-30 2.0G Standard continues Mazda's signature Kodo design language. The overall lines are smooth and muscular. The front fascia features the iconic shield-shaped grille, paired with chrome trim and sharply styled light clusters on both sides. The light clusters integrate halogen main lamps with LED daytime running lights, offering high recognition when lit. The side of the body features a character line running from the front to the rear, complemented by 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, creating a stable and dynamic stance. At the rear, LED taillights echo the small spoiler on the tailgate, while the black lower bumper enhances the SUV's robust appeal. The overall design maintains the family style with sufficiently refined details, fitting the positioning of an entry-level car.
Entering the cabin, the center console adopts a driver-oriented layout with a clear operational logic. The interior materials are mainly soft plastics and fabrics. Although it lacks the leather wrapping found in higher trims, the treatement of the seams is done neatly, and the overall texture is comparable to competitors in the same segment. The combination of a 7-inch color TFT instrument panel and an 8.8-inch central touchscreen is clear and sharp. The central touchscreen supports touch operations, and when combined with the physical buttons below, daily use becomes quite convenient. In terms of features, even the Standard version is equipped with a Head-Up Display, keyless entry, rain-sensing wipers, and a single sunroof, all of which are not commonly seen in models at the same price point. The front seats are manually adjustable, with the driver’s seat offering 6-way adjustments and the passenger seat 8-way adjustments. While these adjustments are not as convenient as electric ones, the support and wrapping of the seats are good, ensuring comfort even during long rides.
In terms of space performance, the CX-30 2.0G Standard has dimensions of 4395mm×1795mm×1540mm and a wheelbase of 2655mm. The front row offers ample seating space; a passenger with a height of 175cm still has a fist's worth of headroom after adjusting the seat. Rear row space is medium for a B-segment SUV. A passenger of the same height will have about two fists of legroom in the rear, though headroom feels slightly tight at around three fingers. The trunk has a capacity of 430L, which can comfortably hold 2-3 suitcases. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 ratio, creating additional storage space to accommodate occasional transport of large items. The interior has numerous storage compartments, including door panel storage slots, a central armrest box, and front cup holders, all of which are practical. Attention to detail is seen with the inclusion of 220V/230V power outlets, making it convenient for charging external devices.
In the dynamic driving aspect, the CX-30 2.0G Standard is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 164PS/6000rpm and a peak torque of 213N·m/4000rpm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The power output is smooth and linear; although it lacks the explosive power of a turbocharged engine during the starting phase, the throttle response is quick, making it agile enough for daily urban commuting. During mid-to-high-speed acceleration, the engine provides sustained power output after 4000rpm, and when the accelerator is deeply pressed, the transmission downshifts quickly to meet certain power demands. The transmission shift logic is clear, with smooth gear changes that hardly produce any jolting sensation.
As for the chassis, the combination of a front MacPherson strut independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension is tuned for comfort. When going over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters out most vibrations, offering passengers a relatively smooth ride. When cornering, the suspension provides moderate support, with minimal body roll, maintaining a certain level of handling stability. The steering wheel is light and precise, making daily driving relatively effortless. The braking system performs steadily, with a moderate brake pedal travel and linear braking force, providing sufficient confidence.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 6.4L/100km. In actual tests, fuel consumption in congested urban conditions is about 7.5-8.0L/100km, while on highways, it can drop to 5.8-6.2L/100km. Overall, the fuel efficiency meets expectations. Regarding noise control, engine noise is minimal when idling, and while wind and tire noise are slightly noticeable at high speeds, they remain within an acceptable range, not affecting normal conversations inside the car.
Safety features are a major highlight of the CX-30 2.0G Standard, as it comes standard with 7 airbags (including front side airbags, front and rear curtain airbags, and a knee airbag), ABS, electronic stability control, forward collision warning, and a rear-view camera, placing its safety performance at a relatively high level among vehicles in the same class.
Overall, the 2023 Mazda CX-30 2.0G 2WD Standard, although the entry-level version of the series, achieves the mainstream standard of its class in terms of configuration, space, and driving performance. Compared to the 2022 Core version, the new Standard version has improved configurations at a lower price, making it highly cost-effective. Compared with similar models such as the Honda HR-V 1.5 S or Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 E, the CX-30 offers superior safety features and driving quality.
This car is suitable for family users who value cost-effectiveness and safety features. It meets the requirements for daily urban commuting and short weekend trips. If you are on a budget and want a stylish, practical compact SUV with competitive pricing, the CX-30 2.0G Standard is a good choice. With no significant shortcomings, its balanced performance gives it strong competitiveness in the B-segment SUV market.
