In Malaysia's mid-to-large 7-seater SUV market, family users and space-conscious consumers often balance between spatial practicality, luxury features, and driving quality — most competitors either lack features or are overpriced. The 2021 Mazda CX-9 Ignite Edition AWD, as the top-tier version of the lineup, packages a 230PS naturally aspirated engine, an all-wheel-drive system, and almost fully loaded intelligent features at a price of RM 336,215, about RM 7,600 more than the 2WD version. The core purpose of this test drive is to verify whether this configuration can support its positioning as a "high-end family SUV" and whether the AWD system genuinely enhances its real-world driving value.

The exterior design of the 2021 CX-9 Ignite Edition continues Mazda's Kodo design language, with flowing and powerful lines overall. The front features a large shield-shaped grille, paired with chrome trim and LED headlight clusters, giving it a high level of recognition. The headlights integrate daytime running lights and turn signals, which, when illuminated, deliver a sharp visual effect. The strong side profile boasts a waistline running from the front fender to the rear, and the 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels (tire specification 255/50 R20) fill the wheel arches, giving the 5075mm length a more grounded appearance. The rear design is simple, with horizontally oriented LED taillights that echo the dual exhaust pipes on both sides, giving it an overall style that's grand without being ostentatious.

Stepping inside, the materials and craftsmanship of the interior meet E-segment standards: the dashboard is largely covered in soft leather, with leather padding on the door armrests, providing a delicate touch. The dashboard layout is driver-centric, with the 9-inch touch screen slightly tilted towards the driver, minimizing the need to twist to operate. In terms of core features, the fully digital instrument cluster and head-up display (HUD) are linked to show information such as speed and navigation. The front seats are electronically adjustable (with memory function for the driver), offering good support and wrapping. The second row is equipped with independent air vents and Type-C ports, while the third row also has air vents, showing thoughtful attention to detail. However, storage space in the third row is limited to just one cup holder, and for long trips, charging a phone may require the use of an extension cord.

In terms of space, a wheelbase of 2930mm is a core advantage. The second-row seats support a 60:40 split folding configuration and can slide forward and backward. A 175cm passenger can enjoy two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom in the second row. The third row is suitable for passengers under 165cm, providing about one fist of legroom, making it comfortable for short trips but slightly cramped for longer durations. The trunk offers a base capacity of 230L, which expands to 712L with the third row folded down. Folding down the second row accommodates large items like strollers and suitcases, meeting family travel needs.

For the powertrain, the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum output of 230PS (5000rpm) and peak torque at 2000rpm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During everyday driving, acceleration is smooth at the start, with noticeable torque delivery after 2000rpm. When accelerating or overtaking, stepping on the gas pedal engages clear gear-shift logic without noticeable jerks. In sport mode, throttle sensitivity increases, gear shifts are quicker, and during highway cruising, the engine maintains around 2000rpm, ensuring ample power reserves.

In terms of handling, the steering is precise with minimal play, and the car follows well during cornering; the combination of the MacPherson front suspension and the multi-link rear suspension filters out most minor road bumps. When passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, impacts are effectively mitigated, ensuring passengers in the car feel comfortable. The addition of the AWD system significantly improves vehicle stability on slippery roads (such as rain-soaked asphalt), with no front-wheel slippage during starts and acceleration. However, on unpaved roads (such as mildly muddy roads), the system can distribute power to the rear wheels, but due to its city SUV positioning, attempting heavy off-road conditions is not recommended.

Fuel consumption is average, with an official combined fuel consumption of 9.2L/100km. In actual city commuting (approximately 30% congested road conditions), fuel consumption is around 11-12L/100km, while highway cruising at 110km/h results in approximately 8.5L/100km. A full 72L fuel tank provides a combined range of about 600km, which meets daily household needs. Noise control is well-executed—wind and tire noise are negligible under 80 km/h, though wind noise slightly increases above 100 km/h but does not hinder in-car conversations.

On the whole, the core advantages of the 2021 Mazda CX-9 Ignite Edition AWD are its nearly maxed-out safety configuration (6 airbags, 360-degree camera, active braking, etc.), spacious interior, solid chassis quality, and the stability improvements brought by the AWD system. Compared to competitors in the same category, such as the Toyota Fortuner 2.8 VRZ (RM 345,680), the CX-9 has an edge in terms of luxurious features (Bose sound system, HUD, memory driver’s seat) while being approximately RM 9,000 cheaper, making it stand out in terms of value for money.

This car is most suitable for families who value "balance"—those needing 7-seat capacity for group trips while also caring about driving quality and safety features. For occasional weekend getaways and short trips, the AWD system can handle mildly unpaved roads. For consumers pursuing pure off-road performance, it may not be the best choice, but as an "all-around performer" for daily household use, it is more than adequate.

In summary, the 2021 CX-9 Ignite Edition AWD is a mid-to-large SUV with "no obvious shortcomings," offering robust product performance and reasonable pricing that perfectly addresses the core needs of family users.

Always felt the space in my previous CR-V was a bit lacking, switching to the CX-9 was definitely the right choice! During the Jalan Ampang morning rush hour, traffic was completely stuck, but the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine is incredibly smooth. With the Bose sound system playing music, even traffic jams feel less frustrating. On weekends, I take the whole family to Genting; with 7 seats fully loaded, the hill-start assist is rock solid, and the third row fits two kids without feeling cramped. Full marks for safety! Last time, I almost rear-ended someone, but the automatic emergency braking kicked in instantly. I broke out in a cold sweat, but it saved us. A small downside is the city fuel consumption of over 11L, which is quite a bit higher than the official 9.2L, but considering the size of the car, it's acceptable. The interior feels more premium compared to the Highlander, though the touchscreen on the center console occasionally responds slowly—using the rotary knob works much better. Overall, I’m very satisfied, and choosing this for family use is definitely worth it!

Last week, during the stormy weather rushing to pick up my kid, the wet and slippery road didn't cause skidding when I slammed the brakes. This safety feature truly hits right at the heart!

This CX-9 Ignite Edition has been driven for almost two years. The most enjoyable part is that it's powerful enough for overtaking during commutes, and it remains stable at 120 km/h on the highway. With 7 seats fully occupied, it's not cramped when traveling with kids. The Bose audio system helps relieve stress by listening to music during traffic jams. However, the urban fuel consumption is over 1 unit higher than the indicated value, but the large fuel tank reduces the need for frequent refueling on long trips, making it worry-free!

This CX-9 Ignite Edition has been driven for almost two years, and what I'm most satisfied with is the full sense of safety during commuting — the lane departure warning on the highway always "pulls" me back when I'm distracted, and during the rainy season, following other cars isn't a worry for rear-end collisions. With 7 seats fully loaded, the whole family went to Genting, and even the elderlies in the third row didn't complain about being cramped after sitting for two hours. It's just that finding a parking spot in the city takes a bit longer, as the car body is quite large.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Hill. Just as we got on the mountain road, we encountered a heavy rainstorm. The Soul Red Crystal paint of the Ignite Edition is indeed eye-catching. When we stopped by the roadside to buy mangosteen, the vendor praised, "Nice car." However, the 20-inch tires felt a bit bumpy on the slippery curves, but thankfully the i-ACTIV AWD kept the car stable. The Nappa leather seats in the interior were quite soft, but with two kids in the third row for the entire journey, the rear air conditioning still wasn't sufficient. The Bose audio played Malay folk songs, which drowned out the tire noise on the mountain road. In terms of safety, the lane-keeping assist occasionally malfunctioned in the rain and fog, requiring manual correction—330,000 MYR for a 7-seater, hassle-free but not perfect.
