The D-segment luxury sedan market has always been an arena for brand technology and quality, where consumers value brand appeal as much as they demand higher performance efficiency and richer configurations. The 2024 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C350e AMG Line, as the plug-in hybrid version of this series, enters the market emphasizing its key features of 105 km pure electric range and a combined output of 313 PS. In this test drive, we will focus on verifying the practicality of its plug-in hybrid system, its dynamic performance in line with its luxury positioning, and whether the configuration upgrades truly enhance the daily experience.

In terms of appearance, the C350e AMG Line continues the elegant silhouette of the C-Class cars, but the addition of the AMG package lends it a more sporty vibe. The front features a large-sized star emblem grille, paired with sharp LED headlights. The daytime running lights are styled in the iconic three-pointed star design, creating high recognizability. The car's side profile is smooth, with 19-inch alloy wheels combined with 225/40 R19 tires enhancing its sporty stance. The waistline runs from the fender to the tail, appearing sleek and compact. The rear sports an AMG diffuser, dual exhaust outlets (retaining a sporty design despite being a hybrid), and blackened LED taillights. The overall style maintains a sense of luxury without losing its youthful energy.

Sitting inside, the luxurious and high-tech interior is immediately evident. The dashboard adopts a tiered design, with large areas wrapped in soft-touch materials complemented by metal trim, offering a refined tactile feel. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch touchscreen central control display form a dual-screen setup with smooth interface responsiveness, supporting voice control and CarPlay connectivity, with clear operational logic. The front seats are electrically adjustable with memory functions, and adjustable lumbar support makes long drives comfortable; the rear seats support a 40:20:40 split-folding design, offering good spatial flexibility. The standard dual-zone automatic air conditioning with rear air vents, panoramic sunroof, and sunshades enhance the comfort of rear seat passengers, while ambient lighting details add a touch of sophistication to the interior.

In terms of space, the C350e measures 4751mm/1820mm/1437mm in length, width, and height, with a wheelbase of 2865mm. After adjusting the front seats to a suitable sitting position, rear legroom offers approximately two fists of clearance, and headroom is ample, ensuring a 1.8-meter-tall passenger wouldn’t feel cramped. The trunk offers a capacity of 455L, sufficient for two large suitcases, and folding the rear seats further expands the storage space, meeting the needs of short family trips. Additionally, the vehicle offers abundant storage compartments, including a center armrest box and door panel storage slots, which are practical and well-sized. The front row is also equipped with a 220V power outlet, convenient for external devices.

The powertrain is the core advantage of the C350e. It is powered by a 2.0T turbocharged engine paired with a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor, delivering a combined output of 313 PS and 550 N·m of torque, matched with a 9-speed automatic transmission. In pure electric mode, the 105 km range is sufficient to cover daily commutes, allowing for fuel-free driving during work trips. In hybrid mode, the electric motor handles starts and low-speed driving, providing smooth and silent operation. When the accelerator is deeply pressed, the engine kicks in, delivering rapid power responsiveness with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 6.1 seconds, providing great confidence during overtaking. Driving mode selection is intuitive; in Sport mode, throttle response is more sensitive, and the transmission shifts more aggressively, whereas Comfort mode leans towards smoother operation, making it suitable for everyday cruising.

In terms of handling, the C350e uses multi-link independent suspension at both the front and rear, with a chassis tuned for comfort without compromising support. During daily driving, the suspension absorbs most road bumps, and the car body remains stable over speed bumps or uneven roads, maintaining the composure expected of a luxury vehicle. The steering is precise with minimal play, providing a solid feel at high speeds, while the control of body roll in corners gives the driver plenty of confidence. The braking system delivers a linear performance, with the combination of front ventilated discs and rear ventilated drilled discs offering short braking distances and clear feedback.

In terms of fuel consumption and range, the pure electric mode has an energy consumption of about 23.1kWh per 100km, with a real-world range of approximately 90km under urban traffic conditions, and about 80km on the highway. This is more than sufficient for daily commuting. In hybrid mode, the combined fuel consumption is around 7L/100km, making it more fuel-efficient compared to conventional fuel-powered cars in the same class. Additionally, the energy regeneration system offers three adjustable levels, with the maximum setting providing moderate recovery without a noticeable drag effect, ensuring that ride comfort is not compromised.

In terms of driving and riding comfort, the C350e performs admirably. In pure electric mode, there is almost no noise, while in hybrid mode, the engine transitions seamlessly. At high speeds, wind and tire noise are well-controlled, ensuring that conversations inside the car are not affected. The seats provide good support with soft padding, ensuring that long journeys are not tiring. Features such as automatic parking, a 360-degree panoramic camera system, and ACC adaptive cruise control make daily driving more convenient; particularly in traffic jams, ACC significantly reduces the stress of driving.

When compared to competitors in the same class, such as the BMW 330e or Audi A4L plug-in hybrid versions, the C350e has clear advantages: longer pure electric range, more comprehensive features (such as a panoramic sunroof and rear sunshades), and Mercedes-Benz's signature luxury feel. In terms of pricing, the C350e's official price of RM 338,888 is slightly higher than some of its competitors, but considering its overall features and brand premium, its value-for-money proposition is still strong.

Overall, the 2024 C350e AMG Line is a plug-in hybrid luxury sedan that balances luxury, performance, and practicality. It is suitable for consumers who prioritize fuel efficiency without compromising on a luxurious experience, such as urban commuters or users who need to balance business and family needs. If you are looking for a luxury car that combines brand prestige with reduced daily running costs, the C350e is definitely worth considering.

Pros
The power performance is excellent, with quick acceleration in 1.5T/2.0T/hybrid/pure electric modes, strong push-back feeling, and effortless overtaking.
The handling is stable, with a steady chassis and steering wheel when cornering, on water-logged roads, or slippery mountain paths, providing strong rear-wheel-drive handling confidence.
Comprehensive safety configuration, 7 airbags + active braking + L2 assisted driving, offers peace of mind in complex road conditions and long-distance driving.
Cons
The fuel tank capacity is small (50L), requiring frequent refueling on long trips, which affects long-distance convenience.
The rear middle floor is high, and the seat is hard. Sitting three people feels crowded, and the comfort of the middle passenger is poor.
Some models are sluggish on start (e.g., C200 in eco mode), with delayed throttle response when the accelerator is pressed hard, and slow power response.

When driving through a waterlogged road during heavy rain, the steering wheel feels as steady as if it were nailed to the ground, giving a full sense of security!

Previously, I drove a Japanese sedan, and I switched to the C200 Avantgarde for the Mercedes-Benz quality feel. In Malaysia's morning rush hour, the 1.5T+48V hybrid accelerates briskly, follows traffic smoothly at low speeds, and has an impressive fuel consumption of 6.6L/100km. On weekends, while driving on the North-South Expressway, the rear-wheel drive offers stable handling, providing confidence in cornering, and the L2 assisted driving mitigates long-distance fatigue. The dual-screen interior is full of a techy vibe, and the Burmester sound system (although the parameters aren't listed, it actually features Sound Plus) is fantastic for enjoying Malaysian music. A drawback is the 50L fuel tank, which requires frequent refueling on long trips; additionally, the high center floor in the rear makes it a bit cramped for three passengers. Safety features are comprehensive, with 7 airbags and active braking providing peace of mind in Kuala Lumpur's complex traffic conditions. The exterior looks younger than the previous generation, but the rear design isn't particularly striking, a 4-star rating is fair. Overall, I'm highly satisfied, as it balances luxury and practicality very well.

Every day commuting is packed like porridge, but the C350e's pure electric mode is quiet and fuel-efficient, with brisk starts and effortless overtaking. The AMG package has a high turn-back rate, but the interior screen occasionally lags, and the middle of the back seat feels a bit hard after sitting for a long time. Overall, it's still great!

Previously drove a Japanese family car; changed to the C200 AMG Line mainly because of the Mercedes' quality and safety. Safety gets 5 stars, no doubt about it – 7 airbags + active braking. During the morning rush hour in Kuala Lumpur, when following traffic, there was a time when the car in front braked suddenly, and it automatically stopped me just in time, almost avoiding a rear-end collision with a motorcycle. Felt frightened but relieved. Performance gets 4 stars – the 2.0T rear-wheel drive is quite fun for overtaking on the North-South Expressway. The 7.1s acceleration is sufficient, but it feels a bit sluggish when starting in Eco mode. Interior gets 4 stars – the large screen and ambient lighting feel very premium, but the rear floor hump is too high, making it cramped for three passengers. Took the family to Genting last weekend; the chassis feels stable but the suspension is on the stiff side, so you have to go over speed bumps slowly. Overall, still satisfied – after all, it’s a Mercedes, with both prestige and quality.
