Mercedes-Benz EQA 2022 Review

With the rapid expansion of the electric vehicle market in Malaysia, the C-segment SUV category is gradually becoming a focal point for consumers — requiring both the flexibility of urban commuting and a balance of brand prestige and practical features. The Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 AMG Line, as the entry-level electric SUV from the brand, naturally attracts many quality-focused family users and young consumers with its luxurious Mercedes heritage and all-electric power combination. This time, we got the test car with the primary goal of verifying whether its actual performance matches the positioning of a "luxurious electric SUV" and whether its range, space, and driving experience in daily use meet the needs of Malaysian consumers.
From the exterior, the EQA 250 AMG Line continues the design language of the Mercedes family, with the addition of details unique to electric vehicles. The overall styling is compact and streamlined, with a closed-off front grille, a large-sized three-pointed star emblem at the center, and sharp LED headlights on both sides, giving it a high level of recognition. The side lines of the body are simple, with 19-inch alloy wheels paired with 235/50 R19 tires, and the AMG Line exclusive sporty kit adds a dynamic feel to the car. At the rear, the continuous LED taillights become a visual highlight, creating an eye-catching effect when illuminated. The design of the rear bumper complements the front design, maintaining a consistent overall style.
Stepping inside, the sense of luxury and technology in the interior is straightforward. The dashboard features a dual 10.25-inch screen design, with the fully digital instrument cluster providing clear information and the central touch screen supporting touch operations and offering smooth interface usability. In terms of materials, the seats are made of genuine leather, the front seats support electric adjustment and memory functions, and they are also equipped with heating functionality, meeting Mercedes' high-quality standards in terms of touch and feel. There are not many physical buttons in the central control area, as most functions are integrated into the screen, although physical knobs are retained for air conditioning adjustments, making everyday operations more convenient. Interior storage space is standard; the central armrest storage box and door panel compartments in the front row are sufficient for daily items. The rear seats support a 40:20:40 split-folding arrangement, and folding them down increases the trunk capacity from 340L, meeting the storage needs for family outings.
In terms of space, the EQA 250 AMG Line has a wheelbase of 2729mm, offering ample space in the front row. A passenger with a height of 175 cm sitting in the driver's seat will find enough room for their head and legs. The rear seating space is also satisfactory; passengers of the same height seated in the rear have about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom. The slightly protruding floor in the middle does not significantly affect the comfort of middle passengers for short-distance rides. The rear row is also equipped with air conditioning vents and power outlets, ensuring practicality.
In terms of power, the EQA 250 AMG Line is equipped with a front-mounted single motor, capable of producing a maximum horsepower of 190 PS and a peak torque of 370 N·m. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 8.9 seconds. During actual driving, the power response in the initial stage is swift; lightly stepping on the accelerator provides a noticeable push-back feeling, making urban overtaking a non-issue. In sport mode, the power output becomes more direct, though the overall tuning leans towards comfort rather than aggressiveness. The chassis utilizes a MacPherson strut independent suspension at the front, with tuning that is firm yet pliable. When passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension quickly absorbs vibrations, and the body remains stable without noticeable swaying. During cornering, the steering is precise, and body roll is well-controlled, maintaining good stability.
In terms of range, the official pure electric range is 429km, with a battery capacity of 66.5kWh. We drove approximately half the distance in urban roads and highways, with the air conditioning and audio system on throughout the trip, and finally achieved an actual range success rate of about 85%. The range declined more noticeably on highways, but overall the performance was in line with expectations. Regarding charging, using DC fast charging takes about 45 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%, while home slow charging requires 7-8 hours, which meets daily charging needs.
The comfort details during the driving process are worth mentioning. The vehicle's sound insulation is excellent, with wind and tire noise kept at a low level during high-speed driving, maintaining a quiet cabin. The energy regeneration system is adjustable in three levels, with the highest level providing a noticeable drag feeling when releasing the accelerator, effectively recovering energy; the lowest level delivers a coasting feel similar to fuel-powered cars, catering to different driving habits. The seats offer good support and cushioning, ensuring comfort during long drives.
Overall, the core advantages of the EQA 250 AMG Line lie in Mercedes-Benz's brand influence, luxurious interior features, and balanced driving performance. Compared to electric vehicles in the same class, its safety configurations are more comprehensive — standardly equipped with 7 airbags, lane change assist, lane departure warning, and other active safety systems. Additionally, a 4-year unlimited mileage warranty provides consumers with a strong sense of security. However, its trunk capacity is not particularly outstanding within the same class, and the driving range is not exceptionally impressive either.
This car is better suited for families who value brand quality and comfort, or young consumers pursuing a luxurious electric driving experience. It can easily handle daily city commutes and weekend family outings. Especially for users who prioritize brand prestige and want to try electric vehicles, the EQA 250 AMG Line is a great choice.
All in all, the EQA 250 AMG Line is an electric SUV that strikes a balance between luxury and practicality. It doesn't focus on overly aggressive performance but instead uses its balanced capabilities to meet the needs of most consumers. It is a pragmatic approach by Mercedes-Benz in the field of electrification.
