Mercedes-Benz GLC 2020 Review

Nowadays, competition in the D-Segment luxury SUV market is intense. Consumers want both brand power and balanced configurations. Many people hesitate between "prestige" and "practicality" when choosing a car. The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 200, as the entry-level model of this series, is priced at RM 299,539, which is nearly RM 40,000 cheaper than the discontinued GLC 300 4Matic, yet retains core luxury features and safety systems. In this test drive, we focus on whether it can meet the basic expectations of Mercedes SUV users at an entry-level price. Can its daily driving and space performance cater to family or commuting needs?
Approaching the GLC 200, the classic Mercedes SUV silhouette is instantly recognizable. The front adopts a family-style design, with a large three-pointed star emblem embedded in the grille flanked by two chrome strips, paired with sharp LED headlights. The daytime running lights feature a signature "double L" shape with high recognition. The side profile is sleek, with a waistline extending from the A-pillar to the rear, giving the body a lean appearance. The combination of 20-inch rims with 255/45 R20 tires not only complements the luxury SUV's stance but also ensures adequate road contact. At the rear, LED taillights feature a horizontal design that complements the headlights when illuminated. Chrome accents on the lower part of the rear bumper add a touch of refinement. The overall exterior avoids excessive embellishment, exuding a sophisticated and composed demeanor.
Opening the door, the luxurious interior is immediately palpable. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials, paired with wood grain panels for a delicate tactile feel. The 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system seamlessly connects with a fully digital instrument cluster; the interface is clear and easy to operate. The multimedia system supports common functions like Bluetooth and CarPlay. The steering wheel features Mercedes' classic three-spoke design, equipped with multifunction buttons and paddle shifters, offering a comfortable grip. In terms of configurations, keyless entry, electrically adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear independent air conditioning, and a 220V/230V power outlet all come as standard, meeting outdoor power needs. The rear seats support a 40:20:40 split-folding design. When folded, the trunk capacity can expand from 550L, making it suitable for carrying strollers or luggage in daily use.
In terms of space, the GLC 200 has a wheelbase of 2873mm, providing spacious seating up front. A 180cm-tall passenger with adjusted seating still has about a fist’s clearance above their head. Rear legroom is equally generous, with two fists of space between the knees and the back of the front seat. The center floor's slight protrusion is low, ensuring that even with three rear passengers, the middle seat occupant won’t feel too cramped. The storage space is thoughtfully designed — the front door panel pockets can hold two bottles of water, the central armrest compartment is also sizeable, and there are cup holders on either side of the rear seats, maximizing practicality.
Starting the vehicle, the 2.0T turbocharged engine is very quiet, with barely any noise audible. The engine delivers a maximum output of 200PS, with peak torque available from as low as 1300rpm. Paired with an AT transmission, gear shifts are smooth. In daily driving, the power response is prompt; the vehicle is not sluggish when starting, and during acceleration and overtaking, stepping hard on the accelerator provides a noticeable push-back sensation. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 7.8 seconds, making it more than adequate for both city commuting and highway driving. The suspension system features multi-link independent suspension at both the front and rear, tuned for comfort. It effectively absorbs vibrations when going over speed bumps or uneven road surfaces, ensuring minimal body shake. The steering wheel offers precise control with little play. Body roll is well managed when cornering, and overall handling is above average for an SUV.
In terms of fuel consumption, we test-drove 100 kilometers under mixed road conditions, and the displayed fuel consumption was 7.2L/100km, which is not much different from the official figure of 6.6L/100km. Considering the weight of the SUV body, this result is acceptable. Noise control is very well done, as wind and tire noise are not noticeable during high-speed driving, and there’s no need to raise your voice while conversing inside the car. The seat wrapping is pretty good, so long drives don’t feel tiring. The rear seat angle is suitable, ensuring passengers remain comfortable even on long trips.
Safety features are one of the highlights of the GLC 200. Seven airbags (including a knee airbag), lane-keeping assist, active braking, and forward collision warning are all standard. Automatic parking assistance and rear parking sensors also reduce the difficulty of parking, making it very friendly for new drivers. However, compared to the discontinued GLC 300 4Matic, it lacks a 360-degree panoramic camera and lumbar support for the front seats, but these features are not essentially needed by most users. The standard safety features of the entry-level version are already comprehensive enough.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2020 GLC 200 are very clear: the Mercedes-Benz brand endorsement, balanced space and features, a comfortable driving experience, and a more affordable price compared to the high-spec version. Compared with competitors of the same class, its safety features are on par with rivals, while its luxurious interior design is a hallmark of Mercedes-Benz. If you value the brand and need a luxury SUV that can be used both for daily commuting and family needs, and you don’t want to pay for redundant features, the GLC 200 is a good choice. Whether it's for young professionals commuting to work or families going on weekend trips, it can handle the job.
In summary, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 200 is a "just right" luxury SUV—it doesn’t pile on excessive and impractical features but delivers where users need it most, offering luxury, safety, and practicality. For an entry-level price, it provides both the prestige and practicality you're looking for in a Mercedes-Benz SUV.
