MINI Countryman 2021 Review

The C-segment SUV market has always been a battleground for family users and young consumers. It needs to balance practical space with unique design. As one of the rare 5-door 5-seat SUVs under the brand, the 2021 MINI Countryman Cooper S enters the market with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, MINI's iconic design language, and balanced configurations. Can it strike a balance between "personality" and "practicality"? This time, we verify whether this car meets the core needs of C-segment SUV users through a static experience and dynamic test drive.
In terms of appearance, the 2021 Countryman Cooper S continues the MINI family's round headlamp design, paired with a black grille and body-colored front bumper. The overall style retains the brand's recognizability while adding a rugged feel typical of SUVs. The side profile has simple lines, with a length of 4299mm and a wheelbase of 2670mm, which are average in the C-segment SUV category. The front and rear overhangs are moderate in length, and the 19-inch wheels (tire specification 225/45 R19) provide a visually balanced proportion. At the rear, the signature ring-shaped LED taillights offer high recognizability when lit, and the black under-bumper guard emphasizes the SUV attributes. As for the lighting system, the entire vehicle comes standard with LED headlights, daytime running lights, and front and rear fog lights, along with automatic headlight functionality that enhances daily convenience.
Entering the interior, the design adopts MINI’s classic circular elements. The center console features an 8.8-inch touchscreen at its core, surrounded by physical buttons and air conditioning vents, with a clear and intuitive layout. In terms of materials, the seats use a combination of leather and fabric, with electrically adjustable and memory functions available for the front seats. The seating provides moderate support. In terms of configurations, keyless entry/start, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear air vents, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system are all standard, meeting daily usage needs. Regarding space performance, the front seats offer headroom of approximately one fist and two fingers (for a 175cm-tall individual), rear legroom is about one fist and three fingers, and headroom is one fist, which overall meets the standards for a C-segment SUV. The trunk has a capacity of 450L, and the rear seats support a 40:20:40 split-folding function, allowing for storage of larger items and ensuring good practicality.
In the power department, the 2021 Countryman Cooper S is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged four-cylinder engine, offering a maximum output of 195PS and a maximum torque range of 1350-4600rpm. It is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and front-wheel drive. During actual driving, the power response is lively in the initial stage, and the turbo kicks in around 1500rpm, providing noticeable acceleration. The official 0-100km/h acceleration is 7.5 seconds, and during regular overtaking, pressing the accelerator firmly provides ample power reserves. In terms of handling, the steering is precise with minimal play. The suspension setup, which features a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent structure, leans towards sportiness. Body roll is well-contained during cornering, but rear-seat passengers might feel a slight vibration when passing over speed bumps or bumpy roads. Regarding fuel consumption, the combined fuel consumption under city conditions is approximately 7.2L/100km, around 6.0L/100km on highways, which aligns closely with the official combined figure of 6.7L/100km.
In terms of noise control, the cabin noise at speeds below 60km/h mainly comes from the tires, while wind noise becomes gradually noticeable above 80km/h. However, overall noise levels remain within an acceptable range. Regarding seat comfort, the front seats provide good support, making long drives less tiring. The rear seats, however, are somewhat firm, offering average comfort for long trips.
In summary, the core strengths of the 2021 MINI Countryman Cooper S lie in the unique design of the MINI brand, balanced power performance, and practical space configuration. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the BMW X1 sDrive20i and Mercedes-Benz GLA 200, it stands out with its distinctive design and handling advantages. While the configuration levels are comparable, its price is slightly higher (official guide price: RM 244,266). This car is suitable for young families who seek both brand individuality and the practicality of an SUV, or for individual consumers who want to retain driving pleasure in their daily commute.
Overall, the 2021 MINI Countryman Cooper S is a "combination of personality and practicality" C-segment SUV. It does not overly pursue sporty performance nor fully compromise on comfort for family use, but instead finds a good balance between the two. If you are looking for a family SUV that is not so "mainstream" and do not want to sacrifice the driving experience, then this car is worth considering.
