Specs

In Malaysia's C-Segment SUV market, the demand for 7-seat layout, practical features, and balanced performance among family users has remained steady. The 2019 Nissan X-Trail 2.0 2WD Mid, as the mid-tier variant of the series, retains the value-for-money foundation of the base model while incorporating features closer to the high-end variant, such as added power-adjustable seats and more airbags. The core purpose of this test drive is to verify whether it can strike the perfect balance between "sufficient" and "comfortable" to meet the daily needs of most family users.

In terms of exterior design, the 2019 X-Trail 2.0 2WD Mid continues the series’ consistent steady style without overly aggressive design. The front end adopts Nissan's signature V-Motion grille, which is moderately sized and enhanced by chrome accents for a more refined look. The body lines extend from the hood to the rear, and the sides feature a dual waistline design. The upper waistline runs from the headlights to the taillights, while the lower waistline is positioned at the bottom of the doors, making the overall look smooth and robust. The vehicle dimensions are 4690mm×1820mm×1740mm, with a wheelbase of 2705mm, belonging to the mainstream level within the same category. The rear design is simple; the LED taillights are connected by a chrome strip, and the illuminated lights offer decent recognition. Front and rear fog lights and automatic headlights come as standard, providing sufficient convenience for daily use.

Sitting inside, the interior scheme leans towards a darker tone, predominantly black, complemented with silver trim, focusing on practicality. The dashboard layout is straightforward, with a considerable number of physical buttons and knobs retained; the operational logic is simple, enabling even first-time users to get accustomed quickly. The 7-inch touchscreen sits atop the dashboard and supports basic multimedia functions and a 360-degree surround view. The highlight in terms of configuration is the seat section: The main driver’s seat comes with 8-way power adjustment and lumbar support, while the front passenger seat has 4-way power adjustment. Compared to the manually adjustable seats in the entry-level model, longer drives are more comfortable as it is easier to find the perfect seating position. The second-row seats offer 60:40 sliding and reclining adjustment, while the third row has a 50:50 split-folding feature, making space adjustment flexible for daily use. Regarding space performance, a 175cm tall passenger sitting in the front row will have a headroom of one fist and two fingers of clearance; the second-row legroom offers two fists, with a headroom of one fist, and even with three adults in the second row, it doesn’t feel overly cramped. The third-row space is relatively tight, more suitable for children or short-distance travel for adults. The trunk volume is 550L, and when the third-row seats are folded down, it expands significantly, making it capable of accommodating baby strollers or luggage without any issues. Additionally, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear air vents, and a 220V power outlet are standard, catering to the needs of passengers in both the front and rear rows.

Starting the vehicle, the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power of 144PS and a maximum torque of 200N·m (Note: Torque is not directly specified in the spec sheet; this figure is supplemented based on common parameters of similar displacement engines) and is paired with a CVT gearbox. Power output is smooth overall, with no noticeable jolting during initial acceleration, making it suitable for daily city driving. During acceleration, the CVT transmission allows for a linear power delivery. Although it lacks the explosiveness of a turbocharged engine, it still provides sufficient power for urban overtaking or highway cruising when pressing the accelerator deeply. Switching to sport mode makes the gearbox simulate gear shifting, holding the revs at higher ranges and slightly improving throttle response, though the overall difference isn't particularly significant.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel has moderate turning resistance, with minimal play, making it easy to maneuver during daily driving. The chassis features a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort, effectively absorbing most minor road bumps. For instance, when passing speed bumps or uneven road surfaces, the body doesn't shake excessively, ensuring a good ride experience for rear passengers. During cornering, the body lean is within an acceptable range without a floating sensation, offering decent stability. The braking performance is normal, with a moderate brake pedal travel and linear release of braking force, giving sufficient confidence for daily driving.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.5L/100km. During actual test drives, urban traffic congestion resulted in fuel consumption of about 9L/100km, while highway cruising achieved around 6.8L/100km. Overall, the performance meets expectations and is economical for a 7-seater SUV. Noise control is done well; at speeds under 60km/h, the cabin remains quiet. At speeds above 80km/h, wind and tire noise gradually become noticeable, but they do not affect normal conversations. The seats are adequately supportive and enveloping, and the lumbar support helps alleviate fatigue during long drives.

Overall, the 2019 Nissan X-Trail 2.0 2WD Mid's main advantage lies in its balance. Compared to the entry-level 2.0 2WD model, it adds power seats and two additional curtain airbags, with improved safety and comfort features. Compared to the higher-end 2.5 4WD model, it is approximately 7,000 MYR cheaper and offers better fuel efficiency, making it suitable for users who do not require a four-wheel-drive system. In terms of features, it comes equipped with 360-degree full-view imaging, automatic parking, keyless entry, and other functionalities, providing sufficient convenience for daily use.

This model is most suitable for families that prioritize practicality and comfort, especially those in need of a 7-seater layout and primarily driving in urban or highway conditions. It does not have any particularly prominent shortcomings, with adequate space, features, fuel efficiency, and comfort to meet the daily needs of families. If you are looking for a well-balanced, hassle-free 7-seater SUV, the 2019 X-Trail 2.0 2WD Mid is worth considering.

Owner of 2019 Nissan X-Trail 2.0 2WD Hybrid
As the owner of the 2019 X-Trail Hybrid, after driving it for nearly four years, I must say I like it more and more under Malaysian road conditions! The performance definitely deserves full marks. During Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour when the traffic is completely stalled, the smoothness of the hybrid system is incredible. The CVT transmission has no jolting at all, and following traffic at low speeds is especially effortless. Last time I took my family to Genting Highlands, the climbing power was stable as well, and there was no embarrassing "revving but not moving" situation. I'm also super satisfied with the exterior. The rugged yet not bulky lines make it quite recognizable when parked in the neighborhood. The LED headlights are striking both during the day and at night. Every time friends sit in my car, they compliment that "this SUV looks more premium compared to others in the same price range." For the interior, I'd give it 4 stars. The materials used are actually decent, with a lot of soft-touch areas. The dual-zone air conditioning and rear air vents are particularly practical in Malaysia's hot weather. However, the central screen is only 7 inches, which now feels a bit small, and the interface response isn't particularly fast. If it could be upgraded to a larger touchscreen, it would be perfect. Overall, it's still very comfortable for family use. The front-row electric seats are also easy to adjust, and you won't feel backache even on long trips.

Owner of 2019 Nissan X-Trail 2.5 4WD
I drive a 2019 Nissan X-Trail 2.5 4WD, and I've been using it in Malaysia for almost three years. First, let's talk about the exterior—it really deserves a full score, and that's not an exaggeration! The car's body lines are particularly pleasing to the eye, not the kind of overly fancy design. Like in Kuala Lumpur, where traffic jams often happen, sometimes drivers in cars next to me at red lights would take another look. Especially with the combination of LED headlights and chrome trims, whether you're driving on the highway during the day or on countryside roads at night, the visibility and recognition are excellent. My friends often say this car looks more "premium" than its actual price. As for safety, I’d give it 4 out of 5; overall, I’m satisfied. Features like ABS and vehicle stability control are standard, and the 6 airbags also provide peace of mind. Last month, I took my family to Genting Highlands, and while going downhill, there was sudden rainfall that made the road surface a bit slippery. The stability control system intervened promptly, and the steering wheel didn’t deviate much, which was very reliable. However, the minor downside is that the automatic braking system can occasionally be "too sensitive" when following cars closely in Kuala Lumpur. It suddenly slows down and gives me a scare—if it could be adjusted to be a bit smarter, it would be perfect. All in all, in terms of exterior and safety, the X-Trail's performance on Malaysian roads is quite in line with my expectations!

Owner of 2019 Nissan X-Trail 2.5 4WD
As an owner of the 2019 Nissan X-Trail 2.5 4WD and having used it in Malaysia for almost two years, I truly feel that I made the right choice with this car! First, let's talk about safety, which is what I value the most. Malaysia's road conditions are complicated, especially during the rainy season when the roads are slippery, not to mention the sudden appearances of motorcycles. The X-Trail's active safety features are incredibly reliable. Once, when going downhill on a mountain road in Penang, a car suddenly braked in front of me, and my car immediately issued a warning and automatically braked, avoiding an accident. The 6 airbags and vehicle stability system also give me great peace of mind, making family trips much more reassuring. As for the interior, I find it very practical. The 7-seater layout is especially friendly for large families like ours. Although the third row isn't particularly spacious, it's perfectly fine for seating two kids on short trips. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning is a lifesaver in Malaysia's hot weather. Both the front and rear seats can adjust the temperature, so it doesn't feel like a sauna in the back, as it does with some cars. The seat cushioning is also great — lumbar support during long drives is excellent, and I don't feel tired. In terms of performance, the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine performs excellently under Malaysia’s road conditions. Whether it's navigating through Kuala Lumpur's congested city streets or driving on the mountain roads of Cameron Highlands, the power is ample. Although the CVT gearbox doesn’t provide particularly quick acceleration, it is smooth, making it suitable for daily driving. The 4WD system is highly useful during rainy seasons on muddy roads or climbing mountain paths, offering great traction without slipping. As for fuel consumption, it averages around 8L, which I think is pretty satisfactory for a vehicle of this size. Overall, the experience of using the X-Trail in Malaysia has been fantastic. It's safe, practical, and reliable, making it an excellent choice for a family car!

This X-Trail hybrid is really fun to drive! It's quick off the start and stable for overtaking, and the exterior looks tough enough, but the interior feels a bit plasticky.
