Perodua Alza 2022 Review

In the B-segment MPV market in Malaysia, family users are increasingly demanding more practical space and safety features. The 2022 Perodua Alza 1.5 X, as the entry-level variant of the series with a price of RM62,500, comes with standard 6 airbags and an active safety system, making it the focus of attention for many budget-conscious families. This time, we got our hands on the actual vehicle, and our main goal is to verify whether it can meet the needs of large families in terms of space, power, and daily practicality while maintaining cost performance.
In terms of exterior, the Alza 1.5 X continues the youthful design of the series. The front features a large black grille paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides, giving it a spirited appearance. The body side lines are simple, and the tire specification of 185/65 R15, although smaller than the 16-inch ones on the mid- to high-end variants, aligns with the entry-level positioning. The wheel design adopts a conventional multi-spoke style without excessive decoration. At the rear, the LED taillight assembly connects naturally with the body-colored rear bumper. The overall style leans towards practicality without extra flashy designs, placing it at a medium level of recognition within the same class.
Stepping into the cabin, the interior features a predominantly dark theme, with a minimalist layout for the center console. Most areas are covered with hard plastic materials, but the joins are reasonably well-finished. The instrument panel adopts a simulated electronic backlit design, clearly displaying basic information such as RPM, speed, and fuel level. The front seats are manually adjustable, with decent support for the cushion and backrest, ensuring no significant discomfort for long rides. In terms of features, the entry-level version comes standard with keyless entry and start, as well as a manually controlled single-zone air conditioning system for the front with digital control and memory functions. Rear air vents are also standard, significantly enhancing rear passenger comfort. However, it lacks a central touchscreen; the multimedia system is operated via physical buttons. Additionally, there is no reversing camera or radar, requiring more care during daily parking for maintaining safe distances.
Space performance is one of Alza's core strengths. The 2750mm wheelbase is considered long in the B-segment MPV category. The second-row seats support 60:40 split-folding, one-touch folding, manual sliding, and recline adjustments. A passenger with a height of 175 cm sitting in the second row can have about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom. The third-row seats feature a 50:50 split design, suitable for seating two children or smaller adults. They are fine for short trips but can feel slightly cramped in legroom for long journeys. The trunk, with the third row in use, can accommodate two 20-inch suitcases, and when the third-row seats are completely folded, the storage expands to 498L, allowing for the effortless transportation of large items such as strollers or foldable bicycles. The cabin storage spaces are also quite abundant, with room for two water bottles in the front door panels, and the central armrest box and glove compartment provide sufficient volume for daily needs.
In terms of power, the Alza 1.5 X is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 106PS and peak torque of 137Nm, paired with a CVT transmission. The power response during start-up is relatively smooth, and it takes some time after stepping on the accelerator to feel the power output, making it more suitable for low-speed urban driving. Once the speed reaches 60km/h, the power output becomes more linear. Overtaking requires a firm press on the gas pedal, and the transmission simulates gear shifts to increase the RPM. During this phase, engine noise becomes noticeably heard inside the cabin. However, overall, the power is sufficient for daily family usage, such as taking the family to the supermarket or on nearby outings.
During driving, the steering wheel is relatively light, making it easy for female drivers to operate. However, the steering precision is average, with no obvious free play but not particularly accurate either. The front suspension is a MacPherson independent structure, while the rear suspension is a torsion beam. It handles common urban speed bumps or minor jolts with reasonable filtering, and the car body does not sway too much. When encountering bumpy roads, rear passengers will feel noticeable vibrations, but this is within the normal range for vehicles of the same class. In terms of fuel consumption, we tested under a 50-50 urban and highway scenario, with an average fuel consumption of about 6.2L per 100 kilometers, slightly higher than the official figure of 5.29L. However, considering the use of air conditioning and the vehicle's load during actual driving, this performance is still economical.
As for noise control, tire and wind noise are not obvious at low speeds. However, at speeds above 80 km/h, wind noise can be heard from the A-pillar and mirrors. Engine noise at high RPM is also quite noticeable but does not affect normal conversations. Regarding seat comfort, as mentioned before, the support is adequate, but the material is regular fabric, which tends to absorb heat in summer.
In summary, the key advantages of the 2022 Perodua Alza 1.5 X are its large space, comprehensive safety features (6 airbags + active safety systems), and fuel economy. Priced at 62,500 MYR, it is nearly 10,000 MYR cheaper than the entry-level Proton Exora of the same category, offering excellent value for money. Its shortcomings lie in the average interior materials, lack of a central control screen and parking assistance features, and merely adequate power performance. Overall, this car is suitable for families with a limited budget who need seven-seat space and prioritize safety and fuel efficiency, especially those who frequently travel with elderly passengers and children. It can handle daily urban commutes and short highway trips well. If you don’t have high requirements for features and just want a practical seven-seat vehicle, the Alza 1.5 X is a good option.
