In the B-Segment 7-seater MPV market in Malaysia, family users have always been the main group—they want enough seats to accommodate the whole family while also expecting practical configurations and affordability. As a popular model in this segment, the 2022 Perodua Alza 1.5 AV has garnered significant attention since its launch, thanks to its class-leading wheelbase, comprehensive safety features, and balanced fuel efficiency. This time, we got our hands on the top variant, the 1.5 AV version, with the primary aim of testing its actual performance in everyday family usage scenarios: Is the space really sufficient? Are the safety features practical? Can the power and fuel efficiency meet the needs of a family?

From the exterior, the 2022 Alza 1.5 AV adopts a stable yet refined design approach. The front fascia features a large trapezoidal grille with a black honeycomb pattern, flanked by sharp LED headlight units, making it visually distinctive; the fog light zones below are accented with chrome strips, preventing the front from looking too dull. The side profile has smooth lines, with the 2750mm wheelbase being advantageous in its class. The door handles and side skirts are treated with black details, in combination with 16-inch alloy wheels, creating a harmonious appearance overall. At the rear, the LED taillights are of a through-type design, connected in the middle by a chrome strip, presenting a clear lighting effect when illuminated. The lower rear bumper features a black skid plate and hidden exhaust, aligning with the positioning of a family car.

Upon opening the door, the interior layout focuses on practicality. The dashboard has a layered design, with the upper part wrapped in soft-touch materials and the lower part made of hard plastic, but the craftsmanship is fairly well-done. The 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display serves as the visual centerpiece, featuring a clear interface, smooth operation, and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is convenient for daily use. The instrument cluster has a 7-inch digital display, showing information like RPM, speed, fuel consumption, and the status of safety systems, with intuitive readability. In terms of features, the 1.5 AV version is well-equipped: keyless entry/start, electronic parking brake, front USB ports, rear air conditioning vents, and a 220V power outlet are all provided, with the rear air conditioning being particularly practical for families in tropical regions.

Space performance is one of Alza’s core selling points. The 2750mm wheelbase delivers a spacious cabin. The second-row seats can slide forward and backward, adjust for recline, and fold with a single touch. Even with a passenger of 175cm in height sitting in the second row, there remains about two fist widths of legroom. The third-row seats are suitable for children or smaller adults, fine for short trips, but might feel cramped for longer journeys. In terms of storage, the front row includes a phone slot, cup holders, and a center armrest compartment, while the second row features a center armrest with cup holders. The trunk has a standard capacity of 498L, which can be expanded by folding down the third-row seats, making it easy to store strollers or luggage.

In terms of power, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine produces a maximum output of 106PS and a peak torque of 138Nm, paired with a CVT transmission. During everyday driving, the initial acceleration is relatively brisk, and low-speed operation is smooth, making it suitable for urban commutes. However, when accelerating beyond 80km/h, the power delivery feels somewhat weak, requiring a heavier press on the accelerator for overtaking. The transmission performs adequately, offering smooth shifts, though there is a slight delay in RPM climb during rapid acceleration. The official combined fuel consumption is 5.29L/100km. In our actual testing, urban driving yielded a fuel consumption of approximately 6.5L/100km, while highway conditions reduced it to below 5L/100km. Overall, the fuel efficiency meets the expectations of a family car.

The front MacPherson independent suspension is tuned for comfort, capable of filtering out most small road bumps, and vibrations when crossing speed bumps are not too stiff. The rear suspension is a torsion beam non-independent suspension, which offers decent support when fully loaded, but body roll is more pronounced during sharp cornering. The steering is light, with average precision, suitable for daily driving but not for aggressive handling. The braking system performs steadily, with moderate braking distance, meeting the standards of a family car.

Safety features are a highlight of the 1.5 AV version, including 6 airbags, ABS, vehicle stability control, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, active braking, 360-degree surround view camera, and the Advanced Safety Assist 3.0 system from Perodua, which can effectively prevent rear-end collisions or lane departure risks, especially in city driving. In terms of noise control, the cabin is relatively quiet at low speeds, while wind and tire noise slightly increase at high speeds but remain within an acceptable range.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2022 Perodua Alza 1.5 AV are its spacious 7-seater space, comprehensive safety features, fuel efficiency, and affordable price (RM 75,500). Compared to similar models like the Proton Exora or Toyota Veloz, the Alza offers advantages in wheelbase and safety features, along with a more competitive price. It is suitable for family users who value space, safety, and fuel efficiency, especially those who frequently need to transport family or friends. If your needs are daily commuting, weekend family outings, and your budget is between RM 70,000 to RM 80,000, the Alza 1.5 AV would be a good choice.

Pros
The interior design caters to the needs of local families, with a 9-inch touchscreen that operates smoothly, and the second-row seats support one-touch folding and front-back sliding.
Equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine and CVT gearbox, it provides smooth and jerk-free starts and acceleration, with excellent fuel efficiency.
The exterior is youthful and sporty, featuring a large chrome grille paired with LED headlights, and sleek body lines that exude sophistication.
Cons
The interior has less soft materials, and the hard plastic under the elbow can be uncomfortable
The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine is slightly slow in output during uphill and has a delayed response to deep throttle
The active braking system only activates at low speeds, requiring attention during high-speed driving

Owner of 2022 Perodua Alza 1.5 AV
As the owner of the 2022 Perodua Alza 1.5 AV, I've been driving it for almost a year in Malaysia, and overall, the experience has been pretty great! Let's start with the interior, which I rate 4 stars because its design and practicality really cater to the needs of local families. The 9-inch touchscreen on the central console is responsive, making it very convenient for navigation, such as finding exits on the LDP highway, or connecting the phone to play music. The second-row seats can be folded down with one touch and slid back and forth. On weekends, when taking my parents and two kids to Genting Highlands, the elderly can get in and out of the third row without much effort, and the kids can adjust their sitting posture in the middle row for long journeys without feeling cramped. However, it would be even better if there were more soft-touch materials in the interior, as sometimes resting your elbow on the hard plastic can feel a bit uncomfortable. Next, the performance, also rated 4 stars. As everyone knows, the road conditions in Malaysia, especially during the morning and evening rush hours in KL, can feel like a parking lot. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT gearbox in the Alza provides smooth starts and follow-ups without a sense of jerkiness. The fuel consumption is also impressive, at around 6.5L/100km during traffic jams on the Federal Highway during weekday commutes, and it can drop to about 5.3L on the North-South Expressway, which is entirely in line with the official figures. This makes it very budget-friendly for working-class families like mine. However, when encountering slopes (like the mountain roads to Cameron Highlands), the power output can be slightly sluggish when stepping on the gas, but given that it's a family car, you can't expect it to perform like a sports car. For daily use, it's absolutely sufficient. All in all, the Alza performs consistently well in family use cases in Malaysia. The interior is practical and the performance is reliable, so giving it a 4-star rating feels very fair!

Owner of 2022 Perodua Alza 1.5 AV
As the owner of the 2022 Perodua Alza 1.5 AV, after driving it for over half a year in Malaysia, I’m really impressed with its appearance and safety features! First, let’s talk about its appearance. Every time I park at the entrance of a Lotus store or pick up family in Klang Valley, people always ask me if this is the new Alza – the front large chrome grille paired with LED headlights looks especially sharp under the sunny Kuala Lumpur sky. Unlike the older version, it doesn’t feel so “family-oriented”; instead, it has a youthful sporty vibe. The body lines are very smooth, particularly the waistline that flows from the front to the rear of the car, along with the 16-inch alloy wheels. When driving along the coastal roads in Penang, even my friends complimented how it “looks more premium than other cars in the same price range,” and it doesn’t feel like a car that costs just over 70,000 MYR. It really adds to the pride of ownership. Now let’s talk about safety, which was the key reason I chose it! You all know how the traffic in Malaysia can be – during Kuala Lumpur’s morning peak hours, there are often drivers suddenly changing lanes and cutting in. Once, on Jalan Bukit Bintang, the car in front braked suddenly, and before I could react, the automatic braking system beeped twice and stopped the car for me, leaving just a fist's distance from the car ahead – my heart almost stopped at that moment. Thanks to this feature! When I usually take my kids back to our hometown in Ipoh, the 6 airbags, lane departure warning, and 360-degree camera are super useful: after driving on the highway for a long time and feeling drowsy, the lane departure warning vibrates the steering wheel to alert me; in the narrow alleys of my old hometown, the 360-degree camera captures even small road obstacles like stone pillars clearly, so there’s no need to panic. Overall, these two points are really impeccable. No wonder it’s a bestseller from Perodua—such a great purchase!

Owner of 2022 Perodua Alza 1.5 AV
As the owner of a 2022 Perodua Alza 1.5 AV and having driven it for nearly a year, I’d like to share my real experiences in Malaysia~ First of all, I must give full marks for the exterior! The LED headlights at the front + the blacked-out grille look particularly spirited, the side profile is sleek, and the 16-inch alloy wheels match perfectly. Every time I park it outside Lalaport, people tend to take a second glance. My friends always say, "It doesn’t look like a car that costs just over 70k!"~ For safety, I’d give it 4 out of 5. It gives a very reassuring feel while driving daily. With the abundance of highways in Malaysia, its lane departure warning and forward collision warning systems are very practical. Once on the North-South Expressway, I was following another car too closely, and the system immediately beeped to warn me, thus helping me avoid a minor collision. The 360-degree camera is very useful when finding tight parking spots in Kuala Lumpur’s city center—it even clearly shows the road curbs, making life easier for beginners. However, the downside is that the automatic braking system only activates at low speeds, so you need to be extra cautious at high speeds. For performance, I’d rate it 4 out of 5, perfectly sufficient for family use. When taking family trips to Genting Highlands, the CVT gearbox handles uphill roads quite smoothly, and the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine does not struggle on the slopes. Navigating narrow alleys in Penang is easy with its agile steering, and parking is a breeze as well. Fuel consumption is around 5.5L/100km, slightly higher than the official figures, but considering how fuel prices in Malaysia have risen sharply lately, this performance is already very satisfying~ Overall, for just over 70k MYR to get a 7-seater car with excellent safety, great looks, and reliable performance, the value for money is indeed very high!
