Perodua Ativa 2021 Review

In recent years, Malaysia's B-Segment SUV market has become increasingly competitive. Consumers want a compact body for convenient city commuting, SUV-level passability and flexible space, as well as high cost-effectiveness. As the entry-level variant of the series, the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo X is equipped with a turbocharged engine and a full set of active safety features at a price of RM 62,500, which is quite rare in its class. In this test drive, we will focus on exploring whether it, as the entry-level model, can balance daily practicality and driving quality, and whether its core configurations are truly "sufficient without compromise".
From the exterior, the Ativa X retains the youthful and dynamic design of the series. The front features a large trapezoidal grille with chrome accents, paired with sharp-edged LED headlights on both sides, making it highly recognizable. The side profile showcases smooth lines, with a waistline running from the hood to the rear, making the body appear more elongated. The 200mm minimum ground clearance ensures the SUV’s passability, making it capable of handling roadside curbs or mildly unpaved roads without issues. The rear design is simple and neat, with horizontally arranged LED taillights offering clear visual effects when lit up. The inclusion of rear fog lights also enhances safety in adverse weather conditions. Although the 16-inch tire specifications are a size smaller than the higher-end models, they are well-proportioned with the vehicle body and quite durable for daily use.
Sitting inside, the interior of the Ativa X focuses on practicality, with a straightforward and clear dashboard layout. The 9-inch central touchscreen display located in the middle functions smoothly and supports basic multimedia features. Meanwhile, the 7-inch TFT full LCD instrument panel can show information such as fuel consumption, speed, and the status of safety systems, with a clear and easy-to-read interface. Materials-wise, the upper section of the dashboard is made of hard plastic, but the seams between panels are even, and the overall craftsmanship meets the standard for this price level. In terms of features, keyless entry/start, multi-function steering wheel, front USB port, and a 220V power outlet are included, providing decent daily convenience. The seats are manually adjustable with fabric upholstery, offering moderate support that prevents significant fatigue during long periods of sitting.
In terms of space, the Ativa X has a wheelbase of 2525mm, making the front-row seating area spacious. After adjusting the seat, a 175cm tall passenger still has a fist's worth of headroom remaining. The rear seating space is considered excellent for a B-Segment SUV. Passengers of the same height sitting in the back have two fists' worth of legroom, with four fingers of headroom remaining. The nearly flat rear floor ensures that even the middle passenger can sit comfortably when the car is fully loaded with three people in the back. The boot offers a standard capacity of 303 liters, enough to fit two 20-inch suitcases. The rear seats support a 60:40 split folding, which can expand the cargo space for transporting luggage or large items—quite practical. Storage space within the cabin is also abundant, with door panels capable of holding two bottles of water and adequate capacity in the central armrest console and glove compartment for daily use.
In terms of performance, the Ativa X is equipped with a 1.0L three-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 98PS and peak torque between 2400-4000rpm. During actual driving, the power response is active at startup, with a light press on the accelerator immediately bringing noticeable thrust when the turbo kicks in, making it easy to keep up with traffic or overtake on city roads. The CVT transmission operates smoothly without obvious jerks, though there is slight delay in rev rise during aggressive acceleration. Overall, it matches the tuning style of a family car. There are two driving modes available: Economy and Normal. In Economy mode, throttle response is slightly dulled, making it suitable for reducing fuel consumption during daily commutes. Normal mode is more aggressive, meeting occasional acceleration demands.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel feels lightweight, making it very effortless to maneuver or park at low speeds. At high speeds, it becomes slightly heavier, ensuring a certain level of stability. The front MacPherson independent suspension is tuned towards comfort. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, most of the minor vibrations are filtered out, and the body doesn't feel significantly bumpy. During cornering, body roll is kept within a reasonable range with no noticeable swaying, giving the overall driving experience a solid feel. The braking system performs linearly, with a moderate brake pedal travel and evenly distributed braking force, making it easy to control in daily driving.
Fuel economy is one of the highlights of the Ativa X, with an official combined fuel consumption of 5.29L/100km. During actual test drives, fuel consumption in urban congested areas was about 6.5L/100km, dropping to 4.8L/100km on highways. The overall average fuel consumption was around 5.5L/100km, which is exceptionally fuel-efficient for a turbocharged SUV. With a fuel tank capacity of 36L, a full tank can provide a range of over 600km, easily meeting a week's commuting needs.
In terms of sound insulation, the Ativa X performs moderately well. At low speeds, interior noise is well-controlled, with minimal tire and wind noise. At high speeds, wind noise becomes more noticeable but remains within an acceptable range and does not disrupt normal conversation between passengers. The seat comfort is decent, featuring breathable fabric material that prevents stuffiness during long rides. The addition of rear air-conditioning vents further enhances rear passenger comfort.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo X lies in its "balance." Priced at RM 62,500, it not only delivers the driving experience of a turbocharged engine but also comes standard with six airbags, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, and a full suite of active safety features—rare within its class. Compared to competitors at the same price point, the Ativa X offers more space, better features, and superior fuel economy.
This car is particularly suitable for budget-conscious families who prioritize practicality and safety. It is adaptable for daily commutes and short weekend trips. If you don't require higher-spec features like 17-inch wheels or front parking sensors, the configuration of the Ativa X fully meets daily needs, making it a highly cost-effective B-Segment SUV.
In summary, the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo X, with its entry-level pricing, offers features and driving experiences beyond expectations. It is an unmissable high-value option in the B-Segment SUV market.
