In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's B-Segment SUV market has become increasingly fierce. Consumers want the flexible handling that comes with a compact body while also desiring enough space and features to meet daily household needs. Against this backdrop, the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H, with its high cost-efficiency and comprehensive safety features, has become a focus for many family users. This time, we conducted an in-depth test drive to see whether this car's static performance is practical, its dynamic driving is user-friendly, and its overall actual performance aligns with its positioning.

In terms of exterior design, the Ativa leans towards a youthful and sporty style. The large front grille paired with chrome trim, along with LED automatic headlights and daytime running lights, give it a high level of recognizability. The body side profile has smooth lines, and the 205/60 R17 tire specification matches well with the body proportions. The rear LED taillights feature a through-type design, creating a striking visual effect when lit. In terms of details, the standard front and rear fog lamps enhance safety during adverse weather conditions, while the electrically foldable rearview mirrors and rain-sensing wipers add convenience for daily use.

Sitting inside, the Ativa's interior design is simple and practical, with the dashboard covered in a large area of soft materials, providing a nice tactile feel. The 9-inch touch control central display is positioned on the upper part of the dashboard, operates smoothly, and supports basic multimedia functions. The 7-inch TFT multifunctional instrument panel is clear and allows direct viewing of information such as speed and fuel consumption. In terms of features, keyless entry, one-button start, manually-controlled front air conditioning (with digital controls and memory functions), and 220V/230V power outlets are all highly practical. The rear seats support a 60:40 split fold configuration, which can expand the trunk space from 303L to 369L, meeting storage needs for daily shopping or short trips. In terms of spatial performance, the design with a 2525mm wheelbase ensures adequate legroom for both front and rear passengers. The body width of 1710mm also ensures that three people can sit in the rear row without feeling cramped. While the manually adjustable front seats are not as convenient as electric ones, the range of adjustment is sufficient to meet the needs of most drivers.

For power, the Ativa is equipped with a 1.0L turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing a maximum power of 98PS and a peak torque that is delivered between 2400-4000rpm, paired with a CVT transmission. During actual driving, the power response is swift during the initial startup. Once the turbo engages, acceleration is smooth, and pressing the accelerator hard during overtaking provides noticeable push-back sensations. It is perfectly adequate for daily urban driving. When switching to eco mode, the power output becomes softer, which is more suitable for daily commuting. In terms of handling, the front MacPherson independent suspension performs well, effectively filtering out vibrations on bumpy roads. The car offers good body stability, accurate steering, and reasonable body roll control during cornering. In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 5.29L/100km. Our actual testing showed city driving to be around 6-6.5L/100km, while highway driving could lower it to about 5L, which is fairly decent for an SUV.

In terms of ride comfort, the Ativa's seats provide good support, making long drives less tiring. Noise control is acceptable, with wind and tire noise at high speeds not significantly affecting conversations inside the vehicle. Safety features are a highlight of the Ativa, as it comes standard with 6 airbags, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), vehicle stability control, lane departure warning, active braking, forward collision warning, and front and rear parking sensors along with a reversing camera, all of which enhance parking safety. These features are relatively comprehensive compared to other models in the same segment.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H lie in its comprehensive safety features, practical space, and decent fuel efficiency. Compared to competitors in the same segment, it offers richer features at a more affordable price, standing out with excellent cost-effectiveness. This car is suitable for families prioritizing safety and practicality, meeting the needs for daily commutes and short weekend trips. Overall, the Ativa is a highly well-rounded B-Segment SUV that is a worthy choice in the Malaysian market.

Pros
Safety configuration is complete, including 6 airbags, active braking, lane departure warning, etc., effectively coping with emergencies
1.0T power is sufficient for urban commuting, the CVT transmission is smooth, suitable for stop-and-go traffic
Fuel consumption performance is excellent, about 5.5-6L/100km on average, even lower on highways, more fuel-efficient than similar models
Cons
High-speed overtaking or fully loaded climbing power response is slow, deep throttle has a delay, and acceleration in the later stages feels straining.
The interior has a heavy plastic feel, materials like the center console lack a premium texture, and there's a shortage of soft-touch materials.
Fabric seats can feel stuffy in the summer, some users report insufficient breathability.

Owner of 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H
As the owner of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H, having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, I must say that its safety features are commendable! Considering Malaysia's frequent rainy weather and the unexpected situations on highways and rural roads — like the time on the North-South Expressway when the car in front of me braked suddenly, Ativa's autonomous emergency braking kicked in and brought the car to a stop. I was drenched in cold sweat back then, and even thinking about it now makes me feel lucky. When stuck in traffic in Kuala Lumpur, the lane departure warning often reminds me not to lose focus. Along with the 6 airbags and the standard stability control system, I feel really assured taking my family out. A perfect 5/5 for safety, no doubt about it! As for performance, I would rate it 4/5. The 1.0T engine is quite sufficient for city driving, and the CVT gearbox provides smooth performance, making it very comfortable to handle Kuala Lumpur's stop-and-go traffic. However, when driving on the East Coast Highway and overtaking, the acceleration feels a bit slow after stepping hard on the gas, especially when the car is fully loaded with five people and luggage. Climbing hills can feel a bit sluggish too. But considering it's a small-displacement turbo engine, its performance for daily commuting and occasional trips to places like the foothills of Genting Highlands is already quite satisfying for me!

Owner of 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H
As the owner of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H and having driven it in Malaysia for nearly two years, my overall experience has been quite satisfying. Speaking of performance, the 1.0T engine provides sufficient power for city commuting in Kuala Lumpur. The CVT transmission is very smooth, especially during stop-and-go traffic during peak hours, and there’s no jerking. It’s effortless to overtake on the North-South Expressway; maximum torque kicks in at 2400 rpm, and driving at 110km/h on the highway feels very stable. Fuel consumption is also pretty good, averaging around 5.5L/100km, which is slightly higher than the official figure of 5.29L, but considering the road conditions in Malaysia, it is already very fuel-efficient. In terms of interior, although it's a B-segment vehicle, the Ativa’s design is quite appealing. The 9-inch infotainment screen operates smoothly, and connecting to CarPlay is very convenient. The seats are made of fabric, and while sitting for long hours during summer can feel a bit stuffy, the support is decent. As for space, after adjusting the front seat to a comfortable position, the rear legroom is just enough for my height of 175cm. The 303L boot capacity is adequate for weekend grocery shopping or short trips with family. However, the interior does feel a bit plasticky, especially in the lower part of the dashboard, which makes the tactile feel somewhat average. The safety features are the aspect I’m most satisfied with. The Ativa is equipped with 6 airbags, vehicle stability control, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking, which are quite comprehensive for cars in the same price range. There was once during a rainy day in Penang when the road was slippery, and I nearly rear-ended the car in front. Fortunately, the autonomous emergency braking system intervened in time and helped me avoid an accident. Additionally, the Ativa’s minimum ground clearance is 200mm, which makes it very capable of handling poor road conditions in rural parts of Malaysia or puddles during the rainy season. Overall, the Ativa is a great choice as a family car due to its high cost-performance ratio and suitability for road conditions and usage scenarios in Malaysia. If the interior quality could be improved, it would be even better.

Owner of 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H
As the owner of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H and having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, let’s talk about its performance first. I mainly use it for commuting in Kuala Lumpur, and long traffic jams on Jalan Ampang during the morning rush hour are a common occurrence. However, the 1.0T turbo kicks in quite promptly, and it can deliver maximum torque at around 2400 RPM. Lightly pressing the accelerator when trailing other cars allows me to keep pace comfortably without feeling sluggish. On weekends, I drive my family to Genting, and when climbing hills, the engine performs steadily at 3000 RPM. Although the CVT transmission isn’t particularly aggressive in acceleration, its smoothness is well-suited for family use. Fuel consumption in the city is around 5.5L/100km, which is slightly higher than the official figures, but considering Malaysian road conditions, this is pretty fuel-efficient. However, on highways, accelerating beyond 120km/h feels a bit strenuous, and overtaking requires pre-planning, which takes away some points. Overall, I would rate its performance 4 out of 5. Now let’s talk about the interior. The 9-inch central touch screen responds quite quickly, and using CarPlay for navigation to places like Petaling Street to find food is very convenient. The 7-inch TFT instrument panel also displays information clearly, such as tire pressure and fuel consumption, all easily visible at a glance. The seats are fabric, which, although not as easy to maintain as leather in summer, has good breathability, so they don’t feel too stuffy even in Malaysia's hot weather. The rear seats have a 60:40 split fold-down feature, and the last time I helped a friend move small furniture, I managed to fit two large boxes when the seats were folded. However, the interior does feel a bit plasticky, especially on the upper part of the dashboard, where the material feels hard and stiff. It would be nice to have more soft-touch materials there. So, I’d also give the interior a 4 out of 5; overall, I’m satisfied but feel there’s room for improvement.

Owner of 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H
As the owner of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H for nearly two years, I’m overall quite satisfied. Let’s start with the performance. The power of the 1.0T is more than enough for urban roads in Malaysia. During daily commutes in the congested Kuala Lumpur city, the car accelerates quite briskly. On the North-South Expressway, overtaking isn’t a challenge either, especially once the torque kicks in after 2400 RPM. At 110km/h on the highway, the car feels very stable. The CVT gearbox shifts smoothly, though there’s a slight delay during sudden acceleration, but it’s totally fine for household use. Fuel consumption is also pleasantly surprising, about 6L in the city and as low as 5L on the highway, which is much more efficient than my previous Myvi. As for the interior, the 9-inch central control screen is very handy, and connecting it to CarPlay is highly convenient. The 7-inch TFT dashboard also displays information clearly. The seats are manually adjustable; although they don’t feel as premium as electric adjustments, they’re easy to adjust and don’t cause fatigue during long drives. The rear space is just right for my height of 175cm, with over a fist's distance for legroom, so taking my family out for meals is no problem at all. The only downside is that the interior has a bit of a plastic feel, but at this price point, it’s acceptable. The safety features are genuinely impressive. With six airbags, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking, among others. Last time, while driving on a rural road in Penang, I almost collided with a motorcycle that suddenly appeared, but the emergency braking system intervened in time and saved me from an accident — it was a close call and definitely deserves praise. The front and rear sensors, along with the reversing camera, make parking in cramped spaces in Kuala Lumpur much easier, even for new drivers. As for the exterior, the design of the Ativa is youthful. The LED headlights and daytime running lights look sharp, and the car’s body lines are smooth. The side profile, particularly the waistline, looks sporty. I chose the white color, which looks especially stunning under sunlight and even turns heads frequently. However, the paint is a bit thin; a small stone chip last time caused a bit of paint to peel off, so that’s something to keep in mind. In conclusion, the Ativa performs exceptionally well at this price point. It’s ideal for young people or small families, and it’s comfortable to drive on Malaysian roads. Highly recommended.

Owner of 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H
As the owner of a 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H, having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, let me start by talking about its performance—giving it a 4-star rating is indeed fair. The 1.0T+CVT combination performs smoothly during Kuala Lumpur's morning peak traffic, and the throttle response is not sluggish. On weekends, when taking my family to Genting Highlands, as long as the engine speed stays above 2400 rpm, the turbo kicks in, and the power is sufficient, unlike some small-engine cars that "make noise without actual movement." However, it’s still a three-cylinder engine, so the steering wheel has slight vibrations when idling, and acceleration past 110 km/h on the highway feels less punchy. It's adequate for city commutes, but it might fall short if you’re after spirited driving. Now for the interior, it deserves a full 5-star rating! Sitting inside doesn't feel like it's a car priced at just over 60,000 Malaysian Ringgit—the 9-inch infotainment screen has clear visuals and connects seamlessly with CarPlay. The 7-inch TFT instrument cluster provides comprehensive information, including fuel consumption and RPM, all at a glance. My personal favorite feature is the digital climate control with memory function—no need to reset the temperature every time I get in the car, which is super convenient in Malaysia's hot weather. The seats are fabric but feel high-quality, and with the 60:40 split-folding rear seats, I managed to fit small furniture from IKEA without any issues. The flexibility of the space is truly impressive. Features like keyless entry and power-folding side mirrors are rare in this price range, showing Perodua really put in the effort when it comes to the interior!
