In the past two years, the competition in the B-Segment SUV market in Malaysia has become increasingly fierce. Consumers value practicality in space when choosing a car and have higher expectations for power and intelligent configurations. As Perodua's first B-Segment SUV, the 2021 Ativa 1.0L Turbo H Special Metallic has attracted attention since its launch with its high cost-performance ratio and rich safety features. This time, we obtained the H Special Metallic version for a test drive. The main purpose is to verify whether its static performance meets family needs and whether its dynamic driving can balance daily commuting with occasional outdoor trips, while also assessing whether its configuration advantages truly stand out among competitors in the same class.

The Ativa features a youthful and sporty design, with its overall lines sharp and not bulky. The front face adopts a large trapezoidal grille decorated with chrome trim, paired with a black lower surround that runs across the bottom, providing a high level of recognition. The car's side showcases a standard SUV profile, with waistlines extending from the front to the rear, complemented by 17-inch alloy wheels (tire specification 205/60 R17), giving it a spirited visual effect. The LED taillights at the rear adopt the currently trending through-style design, which stands out when lit. The silver skid plate below the rear bumper adds a bit of an off-road feel. The lighting system is a highlight, with all models standard equipped with LED headlights, daytime running lights, and automatic headlights. Fog lights are also not missing, and in actual use, the lighting effect is sufficient for daily commuting. The automatic headlights can switch promptly in tunnels or at dusk, offering great convenience.

Stepping into the cabin, Ativa’s interior layout is simple and straightforward. The main materials used are hard plastics, but with silver trim and piano lacquer panel decorations, it doesn’t appear overly cheap. The most noticeable feature in the central control area is the 9-inch touchscreen, which has decent operational fluidity and supports basic functions such as Bluetooth and USB connection, though the interface logic takes some time to adapt to. The instrument panel consists of a 7-inch TFT multifunction display, capable of showing information such as speed, fuel consumption, and the status of driver assistance systems, with clear and easily readable data. As for configurations, the H Special Metallic version is quite sincere: standard features include keyless entry and start, rain-sensing wipers, and electrically folding mirrors. The front row manual air conditioning comes with digital controls and memory function, making it more convenient as you don’t have to repeatedly twist knobs to adjust the temperature. The addition of a 220V/230V power outlet is also practical, allowing you to charge laptops or small appliances without needing an extra inverter.

Space performance is the most critical point for family users. Ativa’s body dimensions are 4065mm×1710mm×1635mm, with a wheelbase of 2525mm, making it a mid-sized model within the B-Segment SUV category. After adjusting the front seats to a comfortable sitting position, there’s a headroom of one fist and two fingers remaining for a 175cm tall passenger, with ample legroom. The rear seat space is reasonable as well, offering one fist of legroom and one fist and one finger of headroom for passengers of the same height, sufficient for daily family use. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding design, and when folded down, the trunk volume can expand from 303L to a much larger space, easily accommodating a baby stroller or suitcase. In terms of storage, the door panels can fit two bottles of mineral water, the storage compartment below the center console can hold a phone or wallet, and there are pockets at the back of the front seats. These thoughtful details enhance practicality.

Powertrain-wise, the Ativa is equipped with a 1.0L three-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 98 PS and a peak torque of 140 N·m (data based on official ratings), paired with a CVT transmission. In actual driving, the power response is quite active during the initial stage; with a gentle press of the accelerator, you can feel the power output. It handles well for city driving, whether following other cars or overtaking. When switched to Sport mode, the throttle sensitivity increases, and the RPM stays within the torque platform range of 2400-4000rpm, making acceleration more direct. However, the smoothness of the CVT gearbox remains consistent without noticeable jerks. On highways, when the speed exceeds 100km/h and you try to accelerate further, the power reserve feels slightly insufficient, requiring deeper throttle inputs to achieve a noticeable sense of acceleration.

In terms of handling, the Ativa's steering wheel has relatively light feedback, making it suitable for urban commuting. The directional precision is decent, with not much play. The chassis features a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, tuned more towards comfort. When encountering speed bumps or minor bumps in the city, the suspension absorbs most of the vibrations, ensuring that rear passengers won't feel too jostled. However, when driving on consecutive rough roads, the rear suspension tends to bounce more, reducing comfort. During cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, not giving a swaying feeling, and the stability during daily driving is not an issue.

The fuel consumption performance is one of Ativa's strengths, with an official fuel economy rating of 5.29L/100km. In our test drive, which mainly involved urban commuting with occasional highway driving, the measured fuel consumption was about 5.8L/100km. Considering it has a turbocharged engine, this performance is excellent and appealing for users who prioritize fuel efficiency. Regarding safety features, the H Special Metallic variant comes standard with 6 airbags, ABS, vehicle stability control, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, as well as front sensors and rearview camera. These features provide considerable assurance during daily parking or driving.

As for driving comfort details, the seats in the Ativa are relatively well-padded. The manually adjustable front seats make it easy to find a comfortable seating position, and long drives won't feel too tiring. In terms of noise control, the cabin is relatively quiet below the speed of 60km/h, with minimal tire and wind noise. However, as the speed exceeds 80km/h, wind noise gradually increases, though it remains within an acceptable range and doesn't interfere with normal conversations. The engine start-stop technology is smoothly integrated, without noticeable vibrations, and the hill assist function is particularly practical for starting on slopes or in underground parking, eliminating the worry of rollback.

In conclusion, the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H Special Metallic has clear core advantages: its abundant safety features are among the top in its class, it boasts excellent fuel economy, offers space that meets daily family needs, and comes at a very competitive price (RM 67,800). Compared to competitors like the Honda HR-V or the Toyota Corolla Cross, the Ativa is better equipped yet significantly cheaper, making it very cost-effective. However, it does have some shortcomings, such as insufficient power at high speed and an interior that feels slightly plasticky. Nevertheless, these drawbacks are acceptable for budget-conscious family users.

This car is best suited for family users who value cost-effectiveness and safety features, especially for those who primarily use it for city commuting on a daily basis and occasionally take their family on weekend outings to the suburbs. It offers a rich range of smart features and safety assurances without requiring a large expenditure. The space and fuel consumption also meet family usage needs. If your budget is around RM70,000 and you're looking for a worry-free, practical B-Segment SUV, the Ativa H Special Metallic is worth considering.

Pros
Comprehensive safety configuration, standard 6 airbags, active braking, etc., effective for rainy day/high-speed hazard avoidance
Smooth performance for city commuting, 1.0T power is sufficient, and the CVT gearbox operates without jerks
Interior has a strong sense of technology, dual-screen linkage is smooth, and the digital air conditioning with memory function is practical
Cons
Lack of power when accelerating after running at high speed with full load, sluggish when speeding up above 110km/h, noticeable delay in overtaking
Ordinary rear design, round/sleek and conventional, lacks sharp and bold appearance
Interior feels plasticky, lots of hard plastic around areas like the co-driver seat, average texture

As the owner of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H Special Metallic, having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, here's my honest experience! **Performance-wise**, I'd rate it 4 stars. The 1.0T engine is more than enough for commuting in Kuala Lumpur city—during the morning rush hour traffic on Jalan Ampang, the CVT gearbox shifts smoothly without jerking while following other cars. Occasionally, when going up to Genting Highlands on weekends, it delivers maximum torque at 2400 rpm, making overtaking effortless. However, when fully loaded with 5 passengers and luggage, accelerating beyond 110 km/h on the highway can feel a bit underwhelming. After all, it’s a small displacement turbocharged engine, but it's sufficient for daily use. **Safety features deserve 5 stars!** Malaysia's rainy season is frequent, and once on the North-South Expressway during slippery road conditions, I almost rear-ended another car. The forward collision warning system suddenly alerted me, and the autonomous emergency braking kicked in and stopped the car for me—it literally saved my life! Standard features include six airbags, lane departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, and a reverse camera, which makes parking in the narrow alleys of George Town, Penang, extremely convenient. Truly gives a sense of security! **Exterior design gets 4 stars**. The metallic paint on the Special Metallic variant looks very striking under sunlight. The LED headlights and daytime running lights design give it a vibrant look, and it grabs quite a bit of attention on the road. However, the rear design is rather standard—if the tail lights were sharper, it would be perfect! Overall, as a B-segment SUV, its performance at this price point makes it really suitable for family use in Malaysia!

As the owner of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H Special Metallic, having driven it for nearly two years, I truly feel like I made the right choice! Let me first praise the safety—it deserves a full score without any hesitation. Malaysia has frequent rain, and you sometimes encounter aquaplaning on the highway. The Ativa's Vehicle Stability Control is very reliable. One time, when trying to avoid a car that suddenly changed lanes on the North-South Expressway, I made a sharp turn but didn’t lose control. Moreover, it comes fully equipped with six airbags, lane departure warning, and other safety features. I feel particularly assured when driving my family on the East Coast Highway. The exterior gets a 4 out of 5. It’s quite stylish overall, and the metallic paint has a nice texture under the sunlight. The LED headlights provide great visibility at night. However, the rear design is a bit too rounded for my taste—if it could be a bit more aggressive, it would suit me even better. That said, it’s still one of the better-looking cars in the B-segment. The interior definitely deserves full marks! The 7-inch TFT instrument cluster and 9-inch central touchscreen are seamlessly integrated, giving off a strong tech vibe. Adjusting the air conditioning or connecting to CarPlay is very intuitive. The manual air conditioning with digital controls even has a memory function, so my wife and I don’t need to readjust the temperature every time we drive. When the 60:40 rear seats are folded down, it’s perfect for weekend trips to IKEA to buy furniture—super practical. In a country like Malaysia, which is hot all year round, the storage compartments inside the car are well-designed, making it convenient to stow water bottles or phones. The interior craftsmanship is also much more refined compared to the older Perodua models—completely unlike what you’d expect from a car priced at just over 60,000 ringgit!

Owner of 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H Special Metallic
As the owner of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H, having driven it for almost two years, my overall experience has been quite satisfying! First, let’s talk about the exterior. The metallic paint really shines brightly under Malaysia’s sunlight. The SUV's high seating position and rugged lines make it highly recognizable in Kuala Lumpur's traffic. Every time I park by the roadside, someone asks about the model, so the exterior definitely deserves a perfect 5-star rating. In terms of performance, the 1.0T turbo is sufficient for city driving. Especially during morning rush hour traffic, the smooth starts and acceleration make following other cars easy. The CVT gearbox operates without noticeable jerks. However, when driving on the North-South Highway and overtaking, there is a slight lag when flooring the pedal. After going above 120 km/h on the highway, acceleration becomes less robust, but this is expected from a small displacement turbo engine. A 4-star rating feels fair here. As for the interior, though it's not a luxury design, the plastic materials feel relatively refined. The 9-inch infotainment screen works smoothly, and the digital air conditioning with memory settings is quite convenient. The 7-inch instrument cluster provides clear information as well. However, the rear seats are a bit firm, and sitting on them for long trips can get a little uncomfortable. Overall, it’s still quite practical, so 4 stars are reasonable. The safety features deserve special praise! With 6 airbags, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking, they’ve genuinely proven valuable. Once, while driving on a hilly road in Penang, I nearly rear-ended the car in front, but the autonomous emergency braking system kicked in and saved me just in time—it literally saved a life. When driving on the highway, lane-keeping also helps reduce fatigue. The safety aspect gets a solid and reassuring 4-star rating. Overall, as a family car, the Ativa performs very well under Malaysia’s road conditions, offering excellent value for money!

Owner of 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H Special Metallic
As the owner of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H, after driving it in Malaysia for almost two years, I honestly feel this car is perfect for local road conditions! The performance definitely deserves full marks! The 1.0T engine is particularly agile in KL's traffic jams. Not only is it quick to start, but overtaking on the North-South Expressway is also effortless. When I took my family to Genting before, the RPM maintained around 3000 while climbing hills, and the power output was very smooth. The CVT transmission had almost no noticeable lag, far better than my previous Myvi! I’d give the interior 4 points. The overall plastic feel is a bit heavy, but the 9-inch central control screen responds quickly, and CarPlay runs smoothly too. The digital air conditioning with memory function is very thoughtful—no need to re-adjust the temperature every time I get in. After folding the 60:40 rear seats down, I managed to fit small furniture from IKEA last time—it’s practical enough. I just wish they could add more soft materials in the next facelift. In terms of safety, I really feel at ease. After all, six airbags, lane departure warning, and autonomous braking are all standard features. One time on the LDP expressway, the car in front braked suddenly, and the autonomous braking intervened to help me slow down—almost had a collision! I still feel anxious thinking about it now! When taking the kids out, the ISOFIX mounts make securing the child seat very convenient. The attention to detail is impressive. As for the exterior, the Special Metallic paint looks particularly dazzling under the sun, and the LED headlights are bright enough for night highway driving. However, the rear design is slightly rounded—if it were a bit sharper, it would be perfect. I’d give 4 points for the exterior, just right. All in all, getting such configurations at this price is really worth it for daily commuting in Malaysia!

Owner of 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H Special Metallic
As the owner of the 2021 Perodua Ativa 1.0L Turbo H Special Metallic, after driving it for almost two years, I truly feel this small car is extremely practical in Malaysia! Let me first praise its performance, giving it a full 5 stars is not an exaggeration! My home is in Selangor, and I need to take the LDP highway and the narrow roads of SS2 daily. The 1.0T turbo engine reaches its maximum torque at 2400 rpm, making overtaking on the highway a real pleasure. Just a light tap on the accelerator is enough to keep up with the fast-paced traffic in KL. The most surprising part is the fuel economy. The official rating is 5.29L/100km, and with my usual mix of city and highway driving, it’s only about 5.5L. A full 36L tank can go over 600 kilometers, which saves quite a bit of money given the rising fuel prices in Malaysia. The chassis is also stable. The last time I went to Genting Highlands, the CVT gearbox showed no obvious jerks during uphill climbs, and with a weight of 1035kg coupled with front MacPherson suspension, body roll during cornering was minimal. It’s much more stable compared to the Myvi I previously owned. Interior-wise, I’d give it 4 stars since there’s room for improvement in terms of details. The 9-inch touchscreen on the dashboard is responsive, and connecting to CarPlay works very smoothly. However, there’s a noticeable amount of plastic, especially that hard plastic piece in front of the passenger seat, which feels a bit cheap to the touch. But the good thing is the practicality: the 7-inch TFT instrument cluster displays clearly, the digital air conditioning has a memory function, so there’s no need to readjust the temperature every time you get in the car; and when the rear seats are folded 60:40, it can fit my daughter’s stroller and groceries with no problem at all—perfectly suitable for family use. All in all, being able to get a B-SUV with 6 airbags and active braking at this price range—what more could you ask for? The performance is definitely a pleasant surprise, and while the interior has a lot of plastic, the practical features make up for it. I highly recommend it for daily commuting in Malaysia!
