Specs

The launch of the Proton X70 in 2018 directly targeted the core demand of the local C-Segment SUV market - offering advanced configurations at a more affordable price. Priced at RM99,800, the entry-level model 1.8 TGDI Standard 2WD comes equipped with features such as a full LCD instrument panel and six airbags, which were previously only found in high-end vehicles. Our main objective in this test is to evaluate whether it can meet the dual expectations of practicality and value for money for family users while positioned as an "entry-level" model.

From a distance, the overall design of the X70 Standard retains the robust feel consistent with the series. The large front grille paired with the Proton logo gives it high recognizability. The body lines are clean, with a waistline extending from the fender to the rear, enhancing the side's sense of strength. The 17-inch tires are well-proportioned to the body, avoiding any sense of being undersized. The rear design is simple, the LED taillight cluster has good recognizability when lit, and the rear fog lights and parking sensors provide convenience for daily use. The lighting system is a mix of halogen and LED sources, with an automatic headlight function that activates in tunnels or at dusk, ensuring practical functionality.

Stepping inside, the first thing to notice is the full LCD instrument panel. The display is clear, and it can switch between different information interfaces, making it more intuitive than traditional mechanical instruments. The 8-inch center control touchscreen responds quickly, with a simple menu logic that is easy to adapt to in daily operation. The seats are manually adjustable, which might lack the convenience of electric adjustment, but the adjustment range is large enough to find a comfortable driving position. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-fold configuration, which, when fully folded, can expand the trunk space and accommodate large items. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning system features an air purification system, with separate air vents for the rear seats, allowing the interior temperature to be quickly regulated even when carrying five passengers. There are ample interior storage spaces, such as the center armrest box in the front row and the door panel storage compartments, which can hold daily essentials. The 220V power outlet can also be used to charge laptops or small appliances in emergencies.

The X70 Standard is equipped with a 1.8T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 184PS and a peak torque that kicks in from 1700rpm, providing responsive power and avoiding any "sluggish" feel during starts. In urban driving, acceleration and overtaking are relatively smooth, with the transmission's shift logic being clear and not prone to frequent jerking. The steering force is moderate, making it easy for female drivers to handle the car, while the steering wheel is quite precise, keeping the body well-controlled during cornering without noticeable wobbling. The suspension setup leans towards comfort; bumps and potholes are well absorbed, ensuring rear passengers don't feel too much jolting. However, during fast cornering, the suspension offers average support, which causes slight body roll, but it's entirely sufficient for everyday use.

As for fuel consumption, we tested mixed urban and highway conditions, achieving an average fuel consumption of about 8.2L per 100 kilometers, which is close to the official figure of 7.8L. Considering the weight of this SUV, this performance meets expectations. The noise control is commendable, with wind and tire noise during highway driving at an acceptable level, ensuring that conversations inside the car are not affected. Although active noise cancellation is not available, the daily driving experience is sufficiently quiet to meet family users' needs. Safety configurations such as the standard six airbags, vehicle stability control, and hill-start assist across the series provide added confidence while driving.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2018 Proton X70 1.8 TGDI Standard 2WD lies in its value for money — with a price under RM100,000, you can get features like a fully digital instrument cluster, dual-zone air conditioning, and an air purification system. Compared with entry-level models of competitors like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4, it offers significant advantages in terms of features. Although it lacks high-end features like electric seats and panoramic sunroof, it comes equipped with all the essential practical features to fully meet daily family needs. It is suitable for budget-conscious families who prioritize features and space, especially those who frequently travel with family members. If you are looking for an SUV that is well-equipped, spacious, and reasonably priced, the X70 Standard is a worthwhile option to consider.

Pros
1.8T turbocharged engine paired with AWD four-wheel drive, quick to start in congested areas, sufficient torque for mountain climbing, stable driving on wet roads on rainy days
Interior configuration is practical, full LCD instrument panel and central control screen are user-friendly, dual-zone automatic air conditioning with air purifier, rear air conditioning and USB ports are convenient
Seats provide good support, comfortable lumbar experience for long-distance driving, leather seats have a pleasant touch
Cons
The paint is relatively thin, and minor scratches can easily expose the primer.
Some models (such as the Executive version) lack advanced safety features like active braking.
The seats are manually adjustable, which is inconvenient; the rear interior has a heavy plastic feel and lacks a premium texture.

Owner of 2018 Proton X70 1.8 TGDI Executive AWD
As the owner of the 2018 Proton X70 1.8 TGDI Executive AWD, after driving it for almost five years, I genuinely feel that this car performs perfectly for the road conditions in Malaysia! First, let's talk about performance—paired with the 1.8T turbo engine and AWD, the car accelerates briskly in Kuala Lumpur's rush hour traffic jams, without feeling sluggish at all. On weekends, when I take my family to Genting or the winding roads on the east coast, the torque bursts out powerfully at just 1700 rpm during uphill climbs. The AWD system stays stable when cornering, and it has never skidded on those slippery rural roads on rainy days. This is a truly reassuring feature for Malaysia's rainy seasons. I'm also super satisfied with the interior! The fully digital instrument cluster and 8-inch central control screen are very user-friendly. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning with an air purifier keeps the air inside the car noticeably fresher during occasional hazy days in Kuala Lumpur. The rear air vents and USB ports are also very practical, and my family has never complained about feeling hot in the back seats. Even though the seats are manually adjustable, they provide good support, and I never feel back pain after driving three to four hours on long trips. As for the exterior, it’s even better! A big reason I chose this car back then was its stylish look! The LED headlights and daytime running lights look sharp, and the body lines are considered quite trendy among Proton models. Every time I park it outside the Lotus mall, people ask if it’s a new model—it really grabs attention and makes me feel proud to drive it! Overall, I’d give full marks in all three aspects. As a family SUV, there’s truly nothing to criticize!

Owner of 2018 Proton X70 1.8 TGDI Executive AWD
As the owner of a 2018 Proton X70 Executive AWD, after almost five years of driving, I would rate its exterior and safety aspects 4 out of 5. Overall, I’m quite satisfied with them. In terms of appearance, the X70’s design was considered quite eye-catching among SUVs in Malaysia back in the day — the large front grille with the Proton badge, the LED headlights with daytime running lights, giving it high recognizability when driving on the North-South Highway during the day. The body lines are not bulky either, and with the 18-inch wheels and 225 tire width, it doesn’t look "saggy" even when going over uneven road shoulders in downtown Kuala Lumpur. However, one downside is that the paintwork is a bit thin. Last time in George Town, Penang, I was looking for a parking spot, and a motorcycle lightly grazed my car, exposing the primer — if this could be improved, it would be even better. As for safety, the six airbags, ESP, and 360-degree camera are really practical. Malaysia experiences a lot of rainy seasons, and on the small roads near my home, the 360-degree camera has helped me avoid hitting roadside obstacles like concrete blocks several times when visibility was poor due to flooding. Once, while driving on the highway in Johor Bahru, I encountered a car that braked sharply; the stability control system intervened in time, preventing the car from skidding. However, there was also a time I was driving on the East Coast Highway and wanted to test the autonomous emergency braking (only to realize later that the Executive model doesn’t have it), which gave me quite a scare — if only the active safety features could be included in this model, it’d definitely enhance safety. Overall, these two aspects perform well enough for daily use without any major issues. However, there’s still room for improvement in the details, so I think giving it 4 out of 5 is reasonable.

Owner of 2018 Proton X70 1.8 TGDI Premium 2WD
As the owner of the 2018 Proton X70 1.8 TGDI Premium 2WD, driving in Malaysia for these past few years, what gives me the greatest peace of mind is its safety features! Last year, on the highway from Penang back to Kuala Lumpur, the car in front suddenly braked hard. Before I could react, the car's autonomous emergency braking intervened and brought me to a stop. At that time, my wife and child were sitting in the backseat, and it really gave me a scare—later I read the manual and found out that this system is especially sensitive to the "sudden lane changes and hard braking" often encountered on Malaysian highways. Together with the 6 airbags and vehicle stability control, I feel particularly reassured every time I take my family on a long trip. As for the appearance, there's nothing to criticize! The first time I saw it in the showroom, I was immediately attracted to its LED headlights and chrome front grille—it’s incredibly distinctive in the bustling Kuala Lumpur rush hour traffic. Several times while waiting at red lights, drivers in neighboring cars rolled down their windows to ask, "Is this Proton’s new car? Looks like a RM300,000 imported car!" The 19-inch wheels make it exceptionally stable when driving along the coastal roads of Sabah, and the body lines are very sleek. Every time I park it at my apartment, I can't help but take another look, and my friends all say that buying this car has "boosted my image to the max"!

Owner of 2018 Proton X70 1.8 TGDI Executive AWD
As the owner of a 2018 Proton X70 1.8 TGDI Executive AWD, after driving it for almost five years, I truly feel this car is incredibly practical for use in Malaysia! First off, regarding performance, it absolutely deserves a full score — the 1.8T turbo engages early, making it super agile for following traffic during the Kuala Lumpur morning rush hour. The accelerator responds promptly, providing power on demand, and overtaking on the highway is smooth. A while ago, I took my family to Genting Highlands, and during the steep, winding roads uphill, the AWD system was rock-solid, climbing effortlessly. Its 10.5-second acceleration is more than sufficient for city driving, and the fuel consumption isn’t overly high either. It averages around 8L, which is even slightly better than the official figures. I’m also very satisfied with the interior. Although the seats are adjusted manually, the leather feels very comfortable and doesn’t get stuffy even after sitting for long periods. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning comes with an air purifier, which makes the air inside the car noticeably cleaner during hazy days in Kuala Lumpur. The 8-inch infotainment screen responds quickly, and CarPlay works smoothly. The rear air-conditioning vents and USB ports are also provided, and my family has never complained when sitting in the back. In terms of safety, I’ll give it 4 stars. The 6 airbags and the 360-degree camera are incredibly practical, especially for parking in the narrow lanes of KL — the camera has been a huge help. However, there was once during a rainy day when I drove over a water-logged road, and the ESP system was a little slow to intervene, giving me a scare. If it reacted just a bit faster, it would be perfect. As for the exterior, I’d rate it 4 stars. The overall design is stately, and the LED headlights are highly recognizable when lit at night. But the chrome strip on the front grille tends to gather fingerprints easily, so I have to make an effort to wipe it clean every time I wash the car, which is a slight drawback. All in all, this car performs exceptionally well under Malaysian road conditions, offering outstanding value for its price — it’s absolutely sufficient for family use!

Owner of 2018 Proton X70 1.8 TGDI Executive 2WD
As the owner of a 2018 Proton X70 Executive 2WD, the thing that reassures me the most after driving in Malaysia for more than three years is its safety features! Malaysia experiences frequent rain, and it's common to encounter wet roads on highways and mountainous routes. Once, I suddenly encountered heavy rain on the North-South Expressway, and the vehicle stability system intervened in time, steadily keeping the car under control without skidding. On usual days in Kuala Lumpur traffic jams, the 360-degree surround view camera has helped me avoid numerous motorcycles and small potholes by the roadside. The six airbags and ISOFIX anchors also give me more confidence when taking the kids out. When it comes to safety, it definitely deserves full marks! As for the interior, overall it’s good, but there’s room for improvement in the details. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning system with air purification is very useful during hazy days in Kuala Lumpur or in traffic jams. The LCD instrument cluster and 8-inch infotainment screen operate smoothly. However, the seats are manually adjusted, so sometimes it takes a while to quickly change the position. The rear air vents are present, but the material has a slightly plasticky feel, especially the plastic parts beside the glove box on the passenger seat, which don’t feel premium to the touch. Giving it 4 out of 5 would be more objective.
