Specs

As local household demand for 7-seater mid-to-large SUVs continues to rise, competition in the D-Segment market has become increasingly fierce. Consumers value not only spacious practicality but also expect higher standards in power smoothness and versatility of configurations. The Proton X90 1.5TGDI BSG Standard, as the flagship 7-seater SUV of the brand, has garnered significant attention since its launch for its 1.5T+48V mild hybrid system, wheelbase of up to 2805mm, and premium intelligent features. The main purpose of this test drive was to assess its performance in daily commuting and family travel scenarios to see if it can meet the D-Segment users' expectations for balance.

The Proton X90's exterior design follows a stable and grand approach, with a boxy overall profile that aligns with the positioning of a mid-to-large SUV. The front features a large vertical waterfall-style grille with the distinctive Proton brand logo, creating high recognizability. On both sides, LED headlight assemblies connect to the grille, and daytime running lights are integrated within the assemblies. The automatic headlight function also adds convenience for daily use. The side of the vehicle features straight lines, with a waistline running from the front to the rear, enhancing the visual layers. The 18-inch wheels paired with 225/55 R18 tires boast a simple yet practical design. At the rear, the through-type taillight design enhances recognition, and the chrome trim on the rear bumper along with a dual exhaust layout (decorative) gives the rear a more dynamic appearance.

For the interior, the Proton X90 Standard version predominantly adopts dark-toned color schemes. The dashboard is primarily covered in soft-touch plastics and leather, providing a pleasant tactile experience. A 12.3-inch central touchscreen is positioned at the center of the dashboard, with a clear interface layout and smooth operation. It supports Bluetooth, CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. The instrument cluster features a full-LCD multifunctional display, showcasing information such as RPM, speed, and fuel consumption. The head-up display (HUD) functionality reduces the need for drivers to lower their gaze to check the instrument cluster, enhancing road safety. In terms of seating configuration, the driver’s seat supports 6-way manual adjustment, while the front passenger’s seat offers 4-way manual adjustment. The seat padding is thick and provides proper support. The second-row seats support fore-and-aft sliding and backrest angle adjustments, while the third-row seats are more suitable for children or adults on short trips. Regarding storage space, the front door panels can hold two bottles of water, the central armrest features a spacious compartment, and the nearly flat floor in the second row improves comfort for the middle passenger.

In terms of space performance, the Proton X90 has a wheelbase of 2805mm, with dimensions of 4830mm in length and 1900mm in width, which places it in the upper-middle range among 7-seater SUVs. When the second-row seat is adjusted to a moderate position, a 175cm tall passenger can enjoy two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom. The third-row seat offers about one fist of legroom and four fingers of headroom, sufficient for short trips. The trunk's regular capacity is not large, but folding down the third-row seats expands the capacity to a sizeable space, capable of accommodating multiple suitcases or large items. Additionally, the interior is equipped with multiple USB ports and 220V/230V power outlets, providing convenience for passengers to charge devices.

Powertrain-wise, the Proton X90 is equipped with a 1.5T three-cylinder turbocharged engine + 48V mild hybrid system. The engine delivers a maximum power of 177PS and a peak torque of 255N·m (Note: The original system's combined torque indication might be incorrect; this is based on the engine's actual torque). The electric motor provides a maximum power of 14PS and a peak torque of 52N·m, paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. During daily driving, the mild hybrid system mainly assists during start-up and acceleration. The power response during start-up is quick, with no obvious turbo lag. During acceleration, the engine and motor work together for smooth power output. The transmission has clear shifting logic, with positive upshifts and timely downshifts. At highway cruising speeds, the engine maintains a speed of around 1800rpm, and in-cabin noise is well-controlled, with wind and tire noise being minimal.

In terms of handling and suspension, the Proton X90 adopts a combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort. When driving on smooth roads, the suspension filters out most of the small bumps, providing a comfortable in-cabin experience. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension handles impacts smoothly without a noticeable harsh feeling. The steering wheel has moderate weight, with average precision, but it suits the positioning of a family SUV. The chassis feels solid, offering good stability at high speeds, and body roll is within acceptable limits during cornering.

Regarding fuel consumption, this test drive was mainly conducted on urban roads with occasional highway sections. The combined fuel consumption was about 8.5L per 100 kilometers, which is considered moderate for a 1.7-ton 7-seater SUV. As for the braking system, the front ventilated disc + rear ventilated disc combination provides responsive braking, with linear braking force and a comfortable pedal feel during daily driving.

In conclusion, the main advantages of the Proton X90 1.5TGDI BSG Standard version lie in its spacious 7-seater configuration, rich features (such as 360-degree panoramic view, HUD, 6 airbags, etc.), and smooth power performance. Compared with SUVs in the same class, such as the Honda CR-V (mainly 5-seater) and the Toyota Fortuner (non-unibody construction), the Proton X90 offers more flexibility in space and superior configurations, while also being more affordable.

This car is suitable for families who prioritize space practicality and rich configurations, especially those who often need to accommodate multiple passengers. Its smooth performance and comfortable suspension make it ideal for daily commutes and long-distance driving. However, the third-row space is limited and more suitable for children or short trips. For users who frequently need to carry seven passengers, a larger vehicle might be a better choice.

Overall, the Proton X90 1.5TGDI BSG Standard 2023 is a well-balanced 7-seater SUV. It meets the needs of family users in terms of space, features, and power, and its price of RM123,800 makes it highly cost-effective in the D-segment market. If you are looking for a spacious, well-equipped family 7-seater SUV, the Proton X90 Standard version is worth considering.

As the owner of the Proton X90 1.5TGDI BSG Standard 2023, having driven it for nearly half a year, what I’m most satisfied with is its exterior design and safety features! Let’s talk about the exterior first. Among the streets filled with Japanese cars in Malaysia, the size of the X90 really stands out—its 4.8-meter length paired with a 1.9-meter wide body, the large shield-shaped grille at the front, coupled with the LED headlamp cluster. Every time I park it in front of Lotus's supermarket, people always look back at it. The body lines are also very sleek, unlike some bulky 7-seater SUVs. My wife says that when she drives it to pick up the kids from school, it looks especially impressive at the school gate. As for safety, it’s unparalleled! Last month, on the North-South Expressway, I encountered an unexpected situation— the car in front suddenly braked hard, and before I could react, the X90’s automatic emergency brake was triggered and stopped the car immediately, avoiding a near collision. Looking at the dashboard later, I realized that its 360-degree camera is super helpful in the narrow lanes of Kuala Lumpur, especially in the old streets near Jalan Alor. When parking, the front and rear radars and the camera work together to provide alerts, so there’s no need to worry about scraping against roadside motorcycles. Plus, the six airbags are standard, which makes me feel secure while driving my family on a road trip to Genting Highlands—especially when navigating those curves. All in all, these two features really make me feel that the RM120k+ is worth the spend!

As the owner of the Proton X90 1.5TGDI BSG Standard 2023, after driving it in Malaysia for over half a year, I am truly satisfied with its exterior and interior! Let’s talk about the exterior first. This size has an ultra-high return rate on Malaysian roads! The 4.8-meter car length paired with a 1.9-meter wide body makes it especially eye-catching when parked at the Lotus’s supermarket parking lot. My neighbor even asked if I bought an imported car. The LED headlights are particularly bright during rainy and foggy days in Penang, and the automatic headlights are very convenient as there’s no need to adjust manually when entering tunnels. The 18-inch wheels make it very stable on the highway, and even the security guards take a second look at toll booths. Proton really nailed the design this time! The interior is even more surprising. The 12.3-inch central control screen provides super-clear navigation during self-driving trips in Sabah, and the HUD head-up display lets you check your speed without lowering your head, which is particularly safe during traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur. The 6-way adjustable seats make long drives comfortable, and the rear air conditioning saved the family during our return trip from Redang Island. The third row is also spacious enough for kids. The digital instrument panel displays fuel consumption and battery status very intuitively, and the keyless entry is incredibly convenient, especially when carrying things in the rain. The most unexpected feature is the 220V power outlet; during a camping trip, we used it to power an electric pot to cook nasi lemak, and my friends were so envious! Overall, I’d give full marks for these two aspects. Proton truly didn’t disappoint this time!

As the owner of Proton X90 1.5TGDI BSG Standard 2023, having driven it in Malaysia for nearly half a year, here’s my genuine experience to share~ Exterior: 4 stars. The large grille paired with the LED headlights make the front look very imposing, and the body lines are also bold and sharp. Parking at KLCC, it does get a decent amount of attention! However, the rear design feels a bit conservative; if the tail lights were sharper, it would suit my taste even more. Interior: also 4 stars. The 12.3-inch central control screen is big enough and operates smoothly. The HUD (head-up display) is particularly practical during the scorching midday heat in Malaysia, as I don’t need to look down at the instrument panel. However, the plastic feel of the third-row seats is a bit strong, which might get uncomfortable on long trips, but they are fine for short rides with family outings. Performance gets a full 5 stars! The 1.5T engine paired with the 48V mild hybrid system performs exceptionally well in the local context—during the morning traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, the BSG motor assists in starting up smoothly without any jerks; on weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the drive uphill is powerful and responsive, overtaking feels effortless. Fuel consumption is around 8L in the city, and it drops to 6.5L on the highway, which is impressive for a 7-seater SUV! All in all, at this price point, getting a spacious, well-equipped, and powerful car is really suitable for family use in Malaysia!

Owner of Proton X90 1.5TGDI BSG Standard 2023
As the owner of the Proton X90 1.5TGDI BSG Standard 2023, after driving it in Malaysia for three months, what surprises me the most is the interior! The 12.3-inch central control screen is very responsive, and it’s super smooth when using navigation or connecting Bluetooth to listen to music while stuck in traffic in KL. Moreover, adjusting the front row’s 6-way electric seat to a comfortable angle makes long drives on the North-South Expressway not tiring at all. The rear air-conditioning vents are very friendly for the elders and kids in my family. With Malaysia’s hot weather, even sitting in the third row doesn’t feel stuffy, and for this, I really have to give full marks! As for the exterior, I think it’s reasonably satisfactory with a rating of 4. The body lines are quite elegant, and the LED headlights are especially bright when driving on the highway at night. However, the rear design is more conventional. When parked at the Jaya Grocer parking lot, it’s not as eye-catching as the Japanese SUVs next to it, but overall, it still looks durable. For safety, I would also rate it 4. Last time, when I was reversing on a narrow road in George Town, Penang, the 360-degree camera helped me avoid a motorcycle that suddenly dashed out. The six airbags and front and rear sensors also give me a sense of confidence. However, there was one time driving on the LDP Highway during heavy rain when I felt the car was a bit unstable, but that might have been because I was driving too fast? Nevertheless, when driving in the city, the hill-start assist and electronic handbrake work very well, which makes me feel secure. All in all, being able to buy the 7-seater X90 at this price point, with its practical interior and safety features, makes it very suitable for family use in Malaysia!
