In the C-Segment SUV market in Malaysia, family users and outdoor enthusiasts tend to prefer models that balance practicality, off-road capability, and safety features. As the top variant of the lineup, the 2019 Subaru Forester 2.0i-S EyeSight not only continues Subaru's iconic all-wheel drive system but is also equipped with the EyeSight active safety suite, a feature that is uncommon among vehicles of the same price range. The main purpose of this test drive is to verify the actual performance of this safety system and evaluate the overall practicality of the vehicle in daily commuting and weekend suburban outings.

In terms of exterior design, the 2019 Forester 2.0i-S EyeSight adopts Subaru's family design language, with an overall style that leans toward stability. The hexagonal front grille is paired with chrome accents, giving it high recognizability; the LED headlights on both sides are connected to the grille, and they integrate daytime running lights, offering clear visual effects when illuminated. The side profile of the car features straight lines, with a shoulder line extending from the front fender to the rear, enhancing its muscular appearance. The 18-inch multi-spoke aluminum alloy wheels are more imposing compared to the 17-inch wheels of the 2.0i-L variant. At the rear, the LED tail lights adopt a vertical layout, and the rear bumper is equipped with a silver guard plate, highlighting the SUV's rugged nature. The vehicle's dimensions are 4625mm×1815mm×1730mm, with a wheelbase of 2670mm and a minimum ground clearance of 220mm, fully meeting the requirements for light off-road capability.

Inside the car, the interior mainly features a black tone. The center console uses a combination of soft-touch plastics and piano black trim. Although it lacks a luxurious feel, the build quality is solid. The 8-inch central screen is located at the top of the dashboard, featuring a simple interface that supports Bluetooth connectivity and basic multimedia functions, with decent responsiveness. The multifunction steering wheel integrates buttons on the left for volume control and call answering, while the right side houses the controls for the EyeSight system. Paddle shifters are also available to enhance driving pleasure. The front seats are leather-wrapped and support 8-way electric adjustment, including lumbar support, ensuring comfort during long drives. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split configuration, expanding the trunk space from 520L to a larger capacity, making it suitable for items like strollers or outdoor gear. In terms of features, the dual-zone automatic climate control system comes with a dust filter, rear passengers have independent air vents, and the front offers a 220V/230V power outlet for convenient charging.

For performance, the vehicle is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated flat-four engine, delivering a maximum power of 156PS at 6000rpm and a peak torque of 200N·m at 4000rpm. It is paired with a CVT transmission and an all-wheel drive system. During daily driving, acceleration is relatively smooth and linear, with the CVT transmission providing seamless gear changes and virtually no jolts. When the accelerator is pressed hard, the engine revs up quickly, but the power delivery doesn't surge, making it more suitable for stable driving. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 10.3 seconds, sufficient for daily commuting needs, though overtaking requires planning for adequate distance. The suspension features a front MacPherson strut and rear double-wishbone independent structure, tuned for comfort. It effectively absorbs minor road bumps, offers good stability at high speeds, and keeps body roll within reasonable limits during cornering. The all-wheel drive system performs well in rainy or muddy conditions, providing better traction and easily handling gravel roads or gentle slopes during light off-road excursions.

EyeSight active safety system is the core highlight of this car. In actual tests, the pre-collision warning system, when detecting excessive proximity to the vehicle ahead at speeds below 30km/h, provides timely alerts; the automatic braking function, simulated in urban congestion scenarios, automatically brakes just before a collision to avoid accidents. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with 7 airbags (including knee airbags), ABS anti-lock braking system, reverse radar, and a reversing camera, offering a comprehensive safety configuration. In terms of fuel consumption, the actual fuel consumption under combined road conditions is about 8.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 7.4L/100km, but considering the all-wheel-drive system, this performance is within a normal range. Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise become slightly noticeable at high speeds but do not affect conversations inside the car.

Compared to vehicles of the same class, the 2019 Subaru Forester 2.0i-S EyeSight has advantages in its all-wheel-drive system and EyeSight active safety package; these two features are relatively rare in C-Segment SUVs priced below RM160,000. However, the 2.0i-L version, though cheaper, lacks the EyeSight system and 18-inch wheels, and the 2.0i-S version does not have the EyeSight system. Overall, this car is suitable for families that prioritize safety features and off-road capability. Whether for daily commuting or weekend family camping trips, it meets the demand.

In conclusion, the 2019 Subaru Forester 2.0i-S EyeSight is a highly practical SUV with extensive safety features. Although its performance is moderate, the all-wheel-drive system and EyeSight system are its core competitive advantages. For consumers needing a car that balances family use and light outdoor activities, this car is worth considering.

Owner of 2019 Subaru Forester 2.0i-L
As the owner of a 2019 Subaru Forester 2.0i-L who has been driving in Malaysia for almost two years, the two aspects I want to talk about the most are its appearance and performance. I would rate the appearance 4 out of 5, mainly because the design leans towards being more understated and isn't as aggressive as some other Japanese SUVs in the same price range. However, the combination of the hexagonal grille and LED headlights is quite pleasing to look at, especially in the evening traffic of Kuala Lumpur, where it has decent recognizability. The body lines are relatively rounded, and while it lacks a bit of a sporty feel, this understated style actually suits someone like me who often drives both in the city and in the suburbs, as it's not overly flashy. Performance deserves full marks! The full-time all-wheel drive is simply awesome during Malaysia's rainy season—last month I went to Genting, and on that segment of the road midway up the mountain that was wet and slippery, many two-wheel-drive cars had to proceed cautiously, while I could almost drive the Forester without slowing down, enjoying particularly stable traction. When driving in the city, the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT transmission might not offer a particularly fast start, but the acceleration is very smooth, and there’s no jerking feeling when flooring the pedal for overtaking. The most surprising aspect is the fuel economy: the official rating is 7.4L/100km, and based on my experience, it comes out to about 8L, even during traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, it's controlled within 9L. For an all-wheel-drive SUV, that's truly fuel efficient.

Owner of 2019 Subaru Forester 2.0i-S
As the owner of the 2019 Subaru Forester 2.0i-S, after driving it in Malaysia for nearly two years, I truly feel I made the right choice with this car! The exterior design deserves full marks. The Forester’s classic boxy shape combined with its rugged lines really stands out among the many rounded Japanese cars on the streets of Kuala Lumpur. Especially with the LED headlight assemblies lit up, it has excellent recognition, particularly when driving at night to Genting Highlands. My friends all say they can tell it's my car at a glance~ In terms of safety, I’d give it 4 stars. Subaru’s EyeSight system is incredibly practical for Malaysia’s traffic. Once, when following a car in Penang's George Town, the car in front suddenly braked, and the system automatically stopped my car, avoiding a rear-end collision. However, the only downside is the low resolution of the reverse camera. At night in dimly lit parking lots, I have to get closer to see obstacles clearly. If this could be upgraded, that would be perfect. The interior also gets 4 stars. The overall craftsmanship is solid, and the soft-touch materials feel very comfortable. The dual-zone air conditioning is a blessing in Malaysia’s hot weather — I like it cooler at 24°C, while my wife prefers 20°C, so there’s no conflict. However, the response time of the infotainment screen can be a bit slow at times, especially when connecting to CarPlay, as it takes two or three seconds to load. While this small issue doesn’t affect overall use, I do hope it could be improved. All in all, this car performs very reliably under Malaysian road conditions. Whether it’s daily city commuting or weekend road trips to the east coast, it gives me great peace of mind!

Owner of 2019 Subaru Forester 2.0i-S EyeSight
As the owner of the 2019 Subaru Forester 2.0i-S EyeSight, having driven it in Malaysia for over three years, I truly feel that I made the right choice with this car! First, let’s talk about its performance, which deserves a full 5 stars without any doubt. You know how Malaysian road conditions are — sometimes you need to overtake on the highway, other times you’re on bumpy rural roads, not to mention the traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur. Its 2.0L Boxer engine paired with the CVT transmission delivers exceptionally smooth power. The car doesn’t feel sluggish when starting, and even at 120km/h on the highway, it still has enough power for acceleration. The full-time all-wheel-drive system is incredibly stable. The last time I went to Cameron Highlands with its winding mountain roads and rain, the car felt solid with no swaying at all, making cornering very confident. Fuel efficiency is also pleasantly surprising; in city traffic, it’s about 8.5L/100km, and on highways, it can go down to around 6.8L, which is even lower than the official 7.4L. For an SUV, this is incredibly fuel-efficient. In terms of safety, I would give it 4 stars, mainly because the active safety system can be a little oversensitive at times. The EyeSight system’s forward collision warning and automatic braking have really saved me once. In George Town, Penang, when I was too close to the car in front, and it braked suddenly, the system stopped my car immediately, giving me quite a scare. However, sometimes on particularly sunny afternoons or when there’s a big truck on the roadside, the system misjudges and triggers a sudden alarm. While it’s not a safety issue, it can be slightly annoying. On the other hand, the passive safety features are truly comprehensive. There are seven airbags; once I was rear-ended, and my family members in the back seat were completely unharmed. The car’s body is also very sturdy. The interior definitely deserves 5 stars! Once you sit inside, it feels very comfortable. The layout of the dashboard is very well-designed, and the 8-inch infotainment screen is easy to use with fast Bluetooth connectivity. The dual-zone automatic climate control is incredibly practical. My wife is afraid of the heat, while I prefer cooler air, and we can adjust the temperatures independently without affecting each other. The seats are made of genuine leather, with 8-way power adjustment. At 175cm tall, after adjusting the seating position, I still have plenty of headroom and legroom. The rear seats comfortably fit three adults without feeling cramped. There’s also rear air vents, so during summer, the kids in the back no longer complain about feeling hot. The most pleasant surprise is the interior soundproofing. Even at 120km/h on the highway, wind and road noise are minimal, making music from the six speakers sound especially clear. Overall, driving this car in Malaysia has been an excellent experience. The performance and interior are flawless, and except for the occasional sensitivity in the safety system, everything else is perfect. I highly recommend this car to those who enjoy road trips and prioritize family safety!

Owner of 2019 Subaru Forester 2.0i-S
I drive a 2019 Subaru Forester 2.0i-S, and I've been using it in Malaysia for almost two years. I'm quite satisfied with its safety and performance, so giving it 4 stars seems fair to me~ Let me talk about safety first. In Malaysia, the rainy season can make roads slippery, and there are occasional unexpected situations on highways. The car’s full-time AWD and EyeSight driver assistance have been a great help! Last time on the North-South Expressway, the car in front of me suddenly braked hard, and the system stopped my car immediately. It gave me a scare, but I avoided a collision. When driving on rural roads, the vehicle stability control is also very sensitive. Even on bumpy roads, it has never lost control. However, in heavy rain, the EyeSight camera occasionally "glitches" and reacts a little slower, which could use some improvement. As for performance, the 2.0 NA engine paired with the CVT is very smooth for city driving. During Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour, it's effortless to follow traffic. On weekends when I take my family to Genting Highlands, even though hill climbing isn’t as aggressive as a turbocharged engine, pressing the gas pedal a bit harder provides enough power. The full-time AWD feels especially stable on mountain roads and doesn’t skid like 2WD cars sometimes do. However, when overtaking heavy vehicles on the highway, you need to accelerate in advance as the acceleration isn't very "punchy." After all, it's a naturally aspirated engine. For daily family use, it's more than sufficient, but those looking for a strong kick might find it lacking. Overall, as a family SUV, its safety and performance fit well with Malaysia's road conditions, making it reliable and convenient for daily use~
