Specs

The competition in Malaysia's C-segment SUV market has become increasingly fierce in recent years, with many family users and young consumers preferring models that are practical in space, offer balanced configurations, and have reliable brands. The 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8G AT, positioned as the mid-range variant of the lineup, enters the market at a price of RM 130,900. Its core selling points focus on Toyota's consistent durability while providing a wealth of safety features and comfort functions, all within a reasonable price range. This test drive will focus on verifying its space performance, daily practicality of its powertrain, and whether its configurations truly meet the needs of target users.

In terms of exterior design, the 2023 Corolla Cross 1.8G AT continues the bold and rugged family style, with concise yet layered lines throughout the body. The front features a large trapezoidal grille paired with horizontally blackened trim. The LED headlights on both sides are connected to the grille, enhancing the visual width. The lower part of the front bumper includes silver protective trim, enhancing the SUV's off-road feel. From the side, the 17-inch alloy wheels (tire specification 215/60R17) are paired with a straight waistline running from the front to the rear. The rear LED taillights adopt a smoked finish, echoing the silver protective trim on the rear bumper and enhancing overall recognition. The lighting system comes standard across the range with LED light sources, including daytime running lights and front fog lights, providing clear illumination at night or in adverse weather conditions.

Inside, the interior features a dark color scheme, with the center console wrapped in soft-touch materials, offering a delicate feel. The 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display is positioned at the top of the center console, providing smooth operation and supporting basic multimedia functions. Below it, some physical buttons are retained for convenient operation while driving. The instrument cluster includes a 4.2-inch LCD screen that displays basic information such as speed, fuel consumption, and mileage, with clear readability. In terms of configuration, the 1.8G AT comes standard with keyless entry/start, an 8-way electrically adjustable driver's seat, automatic air conditioning, rain-sensing wipers, and a 6-speaker audio system. The front row is also equipped with a 220V/230V power outlet to meet daily charging needs. Safety features are a highlight of this car, with all models coming standard with 7 airbags (including a knee airbag), ABS, vehicle stability control, blind-spot monitoring, and an active braking system, providing comprehensive safety protection for occupants.

In terms of space performance, the 2023 Corolla Cross 1.8G AT has body dimensions of 4450mm×1825mm×1620mm and a wheelbase of 2640mm. The rear legroom is quite spacious, allowing a passenger who is 175cm tall to sit in the rear with about two fists' worth of space between their knees and the front seats. Headroom is also quite ample. The trunk has a capacity of 440L, making it sufficient for storing 2-3 suitcases, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split fold, which can further expand storage space, offering great practicality. In terms of storage capabilities, the design of the front central armrest box, door storage compartments, and cup holders is quite reasonable, allowing for the storage of everyday items such as phones and water bottles. The rear seats are equipped with air conditioning vents, enhancing the comfort of rear-seat passengers.

In terms of the power system, the 1.8G AT is equipped with a 1.8L naturally aspirated engine, with a maximum power of 103kW (139PS) and a maximum torque of 172N·m, paired with a CVT transmission, featuring a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. During actual driving, the power response during the start is relatively linear, the acceleration process is steady, and the CVT transmission provides good smoothness without significant jerking. When driving in urban roads, the power is sufficient to handle daily commuting, and overtaking requires stepping harder on the accelerator. Once the engine revs increase, there is a noticeable burst of power. The suspension system uses front MacPherson independent suspension and rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, with tuning focused on comfort. It effectively filters out most vibrations when passing uneven roads, maintaining the stability of the car body. The steering wheel provides precise control with minimal dead zone, making it agile and suitable for urban driving.

In terms of specialized performance tests, the car's fuel efficiency is remarkable, with a combined fuel consumption of approximately 6.5L per 100 kilometers under mixed road conditions. For a C-segment SUV, this fuel economy performance is quite impressive. Regarding braking performance, the ventilated disc brakes both in the front and rear provide stable braking effects with short stopping distances, offering sufficient confidence. In terms of noise control, when driving at high speed, wind noise and tire noise are somewhat noticeable but within an acceptable range and do not affect normal communication among passengers inside the car. Regarding seat comfort, the front seats offer good cushioning and are not prone to causing fatigue during long drives. The rear seats are also well-padded, offering high levels of passenger comfort.

To summarize, the key strengths of the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8G AT lie in its well-balanced configuration, practical space, and reliable safety performance. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Honda HR-V 1.5V, it has advantages in safety features (7 airbags) and price, while the HR-V has a slight lead in power parameters. It is suitable for families prioritizing practicality and safety as well as young consumers seeking brand reliability. Overall, the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8G AT is a C-segment SUV that balances family and daily commuting needs, with impressive performance in terms of space, features, and fuel economy. It is one of the models worth considering in this market segment.

Owner of 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8V AT
As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8V AT, after driving it for nearly half a year in Malaysia, I truly feel like I made the right choice! Let's talk about safety first, giving it 4 stars is totally reasonable — 7 airbags, lane departure warning, and active braking are all very practical features. Last time when I was stuck in traffic in KL, the car in front of me suddenly braked hard, and the active braking system immediately intervened to stop the car for me. It gave me quite a scare but definitely provided reassurance. However, it would be perfect if it came with a 360-degree panoramic camera. After all, cars are often parked along the roadside in Malaysia, and navigating narrow roads requires extra caution. As for the exterior, I would also give it 4 stars. The design of the Corolla Cross is quite attractive for a C-Segment car — the combination of LED headlights and daytime running lights gives it a spirited look, and the body lines are not bulky. When I drove it to Melaka's coastline for photos, my friend even commented that this car looks especially great with the beach and sunset! However, the rear design is somewhat conventional; it would be even more appealing if the taillights were sharper. What surprised me the most is its performance, which I have to rate 5 stars! The 1.8L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT gearbox is a perfect match for Malaysia's road conditions. Whether climbing hills on Penang's mountain roads, the power delivery is very smooth without any jerking, or cruising at 120km/h on the North-South Expressway, it remains stable with rpm maintained around 2000, and fuel consumption can be kept at about 7L per 100km, which is much more economical compared to my old car. Additionally, with a minimum ground clearance of 161 mm, I don't have to worry about scraping the undercarriage when occasionally driving on rough roads in rural areas. The practicality is top-notch! Overall, this car's performance in terms of safety, exterior, and performance has met my expectations. Whether for daily commuting in Malaysia or weekend getaways, it can handle all with ease. Highly recommended to friends who are in the process of choosing a car!

Owner of 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport
As a 2023 Corolla Cross GR Sport owner, after driving it for half a year, I love it more and more! Let me talk about its performance first — with Malaysia’s daily traffic jams, the 1.8L engine provides super smooth power for urban driving, and the CVT transmission has no sense of jerky shifts at all. When hitting the North-South Expressway, overtaking is powerful and efficient, and it remains stable even at 120km/h on the highway. Plus, it's fuel-efficient — a full tank of gas is enough for a round trip from KL to Penang. Safety-wise, it’s worth praising! Last time on the LDP highway, I almost got cut off, but the automatic emergency braking activated and stopped the car for me. It gave me a scare but truly saved me! The lane departure warning is especially handy when driving long distances on highways. With 7 airbags and a vehicle stability control system, traveling with family is totally worry-free. The interior also suits my taste. The sporty GR Sport seats provide excellent support and are comfortable even on long drives. The 9-inch infotainment screen operates smoothly, and using CarPlay is very convenient. Additionally, with keyless entry and automatic air-conditioning, the details are thoughtfully executed. In short, under Malaysia’s road conditions, this car delivers full marks in performance, safety, and interior design, offering excellent value for money!

Owner of 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport
As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport and driving it in Malaysia for nearly half a year, the thing I want to praise the most is its exterior and interior! Let's talk about the exterior first. The blacked-out kit of the GR Sport version is absolutely my favorite — the black front grille, 18-inch glossy black rims, paired with the red side trim on the body, really make it stand out among the ordinary SUVs on the streets of Kuala Lumpur. Every time I park at Pavilion's parking lot, I can feel the stares from nearby car owners, and even the staff at gas stations have asked me if it's a special edition! The interior surprised me even more. The sporty red-black seats offer amazing support, keeping me stable when driving through the winding roads of Genting Highlands; the soft material on the dashboard feels premium, and the air-conditioning knobs have a very refined level of damping. The most considerate feature is the 9-inch infotainment screen, which is very convenient in Malaysia's frequent sudden rains — I can use voice commands to change songs or adjust the air conditioning without distraction. In conclusion, the exterior and interior deserve a solid 5 out of 5. Every time I step into the car, it lifts my mood!

Owner of 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport
As the owner, I have been driving the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport for a few months in Malaysia, and overall, the experience has been good. In terms of appearance, the GR Sport's sporty kit is quite eye-catching, especially the black front grille and 18-inch wheels, making it very recognizable in the traffic of KL. However, the car paint is relatively soft and easily gets small scratches, which slightly lowers the score. The safety features are very comprehensive, with 7 airbags along with active braking and lane departure warning. Last time on the North-South Highway, I almost got too close to another car, but the system reminded me just in time. This is particularly useful on Malaysian roads, which often have traffic jams and occasional unexpected situations. The interior materials are moderate, and the seats are manually adjustable, which can be a bit tiring for long drives. However, the 9-inch touchscreen on the center console is quite responsive, and the air conditioning works well, though there are quite a few plastic parts, making the texture feel average. Overall, as a family car, it still performs very reliably on Malaysian roads.

Owner of 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport
As the owner of the 2023 Corolla Cross GR Sport, I've been driving it for nearly half a year in Malaysia. I feel both the interior and safety features are quite reliable! In terms of the interior, the sporty-style seats in the GR Sport have pretty good support, and the combination of leather and Alcantara materials feels premium. Even on long drives, they don’t feel stuffy—which is crucial given Malaysia’s year-round 30+ degree weather. The 9-inch central control screen responds fairly quickly, and connecting to CarPlay for navigation to KLCC or the Johor Bahru checkpoint is super convenient. However, if the screen bezel were narrower, it would look even more refined. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5—not flawless but with room for minor improvements. As for safety, I have to give it praise! With so many highways and rural roads in Malaysia, the forward collision warning once went off suddenly on the North-South Expressway when I was tailgating too closely, and the emergency braking actively helped slow me down—I almost rear-ended the car ahead. On regular drives like on the LDP (Kuala Lumpur Outer Ring Road), the lane departure warning subtly corrects the steering, which is super reassuring for someone like me who often travels long distances. With 7 airbags and a full suite of active safety features, the sense of security is top-notch. A perfect 4 out of 5—amazing, though it would be even better if the adaptive cruise control were a bit smarter!
