The competition in the C-Segment SUV market in Malaysia has been intense in recent years. Consumers value both practicality and interior space, while also having clear demands for smart features and fuel efficiency. The Toyota Corolla Cross, as a popular contender in this segment, continues to draw attention with its balanced configuration and reliable brand reputation in its 2023 1.8V AT variant. The primary goal of this test drive is to assess its actual performance in daily commuting and family outing scenarios, to determine whether this model can truly meet the diverse needs of local users.

Approaching the 2023 Corolla Cross 1.8V AT, the first impression is its simple yet appealing family-style design. The large trapezoidal front grille with chrome accents connects to the LED headlights on both sides, giving it high recognition; the side profile features smooth lines, and the 18-inch alloy wheels (225/50 R18 specifications) enhance the side proportions, while the slightly prominent wheel arches add a hint of rugged SUV style. At the rear, the LED tail lights adopt a horizontal design and connect with the chrome trim, visually extending the width of the vehicle; the silver skid plate and dual-exit decorative exhaust layout on the lower rear bumper ensure the rear does not appear too plain. In terms of the lighting system, LED headlights and daytime running lights are standard, providing ample brightness when turned on, and ensuring clear visibility during night driving.

Sitting inside, the interior design prioritizes practicality, featuring a combination of soft-touch plastics and piano-black accents on the dashboard. While the tactile experience isn't particularly luxurious, the build quality is solid. The 9-inch touchscreen display positioned at the top of the dashboard offers decent smoothness in operation, supporting Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone integration (though it’s a pity that it doesn’t come with wireless CarPlay/Android Auto). The 4.2-inch LCD instrument panel is clear and provides direct visibility of speed, fuel consumption, and safety system status. For features, keyless entry/start, 8-way electrically adjustable front seats, single-zone automatic air conditioning, rain-sensing wipers, and power-folding side mirrors are all standard, offering sufficient convenience for daily use. Regarding space, the vehicle measures 4450mm in length, 1825mm in width, and 1620mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2640mm. The front row offers ample passenger space, with over a fist-width of clearance for a 175cm tall occupant's head and legs. The rear row provides about two fist-widths of legroom and one fist-width of headroom, while the slightly raised floor hump in the middle doesn't significantly affect long-duration seating for the middle passenger. The trunk has a 440L capacity and fits two 28-inch suitcases with room to spare. The 60:40 split-folding rear seats allow for expanded space to accommodate larger items, meeting the luggage needs for family trips. Additionally, the front center console storage box, door panel pockets, and rear cup holders offer practical storage capability for daily use.

In terms of power, the 1.8L naturally aspirated engine produces a maximum output of 103kW (139PS) and a peak torque of 172N·m, paired with a CVT transmission. During startup, the power output is smooth without any noticeable lag. For daily commuting on urban roads, the throttle responds actively, and accelerating to 60km/h is effortless. On highways, overtaking requires pressing the throttle deeply to push the engine speed above 4000rpm, at which point torque output is sufficient, making the overtaking process fairly smooth, though the latter-stage acceleration lacks explosive power. The driving modes include Normal and Eco. In Eco mode, throttle responses become slightly sluggish, making it suitable for highway cruising. The chassis uses a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, tuned for comfort. When driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension absorbs most minor bumps effectively, and body sway is minimal. While cornering, the body roll is kept within a reasonable range. The steering wheel offers moderate precision, with minimal play, making daily driving adequately agile.

During the fuel consumption testing phase, we drove approximately 50km in city congestion and highway segments, with the air conditioning on throughout the journey. The final fuel consumption was about 6.8L per 100km, which is not significantly different from the official claimed figure. Its fuel economy ranks moderately high compared to other SUVs in the same class. In terms of safety features, 7 airbags, ABS, vehicle stability control, lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, and forward collision warning are all standard. During highway cruising, the lane departure warning timely alerts, and the active braking system responds sensitively when encountering sudden braking from the vehicle ahead, effectively reducing collision risks.

In terms of ride comfort, the noise control inside the cabin is commendable, with wind and tire noise not being noticeable at 60km/h in urban areas. At 120km/h on the highway, wind noise slightly increases but does not hinder in-car conversations. The seat cushioning has moderate softness and sufficient support, preventing noticeable lumbar discomfort during long drives. The only minor drawback is the absence of air conditioning vents for the rear seats, potentially making rear passengers feel slightly warm during summer.

Overall, the 2023 Corolla Cross 1.8V AT's core strengths lie in its balanced space performance, comprehensive safety features, and reliable fuel economy. Compared to the same-class Honda HR-V 1.5L version, it offers more complete safety configurations (including lane change assist and knee airbags) and is more affordable (with the HR-V 1.5V version priced at approximately RM145,900). Compared to the Nissan X-Trail 2.0L version, it has lower fuel consumption and better cost advantages for post-purchase maintenance. This vehicle is well-suited for families prioritizing practicality and safety, especially for daily commuting and weekend family trips, meeting these needs effectively. For young consumers seeking dynamic performance, it may feel slightly underpowered, but if reliability and low ownership costs are prioritized, it remains a good choice.

In summary, the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8V AT is a family SUV with no significant shortcomings. Its balanced product strengths and Toyota's brand reliability ensure its competitiveness in the C-Segment SUV market. If you are looking for a reliable and practical family vehicle, it is worth considering.

As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8V AT, after driving it for more than half a year, I can say that the daily driving experience in Malaysia is absolutely amazing! Let’s start with the exterior, giving it a full 5 points without any doubt—this car’s design truly stands out in the C-Segment. The large grille at the front combined with the LED headlights gives it a highly recognizable appearance on the streets of Kuala Lumpur. The lines at the rear are also very clean and sharp. Whenever I park it at Jaya Grocer, there’s always someone sneaking a glance at it. My friends always comment that "this car looks much more premium than its actual price!" In terms of safety, I’d give it 4 points, mainly because the basic features are very complete: 7 airbags, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, and so on. Last time, while driving on the highway in Penang, I was following another vehicle too closely—suddenly, the system gave an alert and even tapped the brakes for me. It gave me a scare but also saved the situation. However, it would be perfect if it included a 360-degree panoramic view camera. Parking near Pavilion in Kuala Lumpur can be really tight, and new drivers might feel a bit nervous. Performance deserves a full 5 points! The 1.8L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT gearbox is simply perfect for road conditions in Malaysia. When driving in the suburbs of Selangor, acceleration is very smooth, and overtaking is effortless. Even when stuck in morning traffic on Jalan Ampang, the gearbox doesn’t feel jerky, making it a particularly enjoyable drive. Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands. The power was plentiful even while climbing uphill, and with the air conditioning running at full blast, it still didn’t feel sluggish. Fuel consumption is around 7.5L/100km, which is really fuel-efficient for an SUV in this segment! Overall, this car is very suitable for commuting and short trips in Malaysia, offering outstanding value for money!

Owner of 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8V AT
As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8V AT, after driving it in Malaysia for three months, I’m genuinely satisfied! Let’s talk about the interior first, I’d give it 5 stars—the first feeling when sitting inside is comfort. The leather seats feel exquisite to the touch, and the electric adjustment for the front seats is super convenient. Adjusting to a comfortable angle during daily traffic jams ensures my back doesn’t feel tired at all. The central control screen is very responsive and connects to CarPlay instantly. Listening to music or using navigation while stuck in traffic in KL is very smooth. The storage design is thoughtful too; all my essentials like wallet and phone have specific spots, keeping the space completely tidy. As for performance, it deserves 5 stars as well! Everyone knows the roads in Malaysia; sometimes when encountering sudden inclines or overtaking on the highway, stepping on the accelerator delivers power very smoothly. The CVT gearbox shifts seamlessly, driving feels exceptionally smooth. The other day I took my family to Genting Highlands, and going uphill was effortless, with no signs of struggling. Fuel consumption in urban areas is around 7-8 liters per 100km, and it's even lower on highways, which is really economical for an SUV of this class. As for the exterior, I’d give it 4 stars. Overall, the design is quite impressive, with very bright LED headlights that are highly recognizable both day and night. However, it might be my personal aesthetic preference, but I find the rear design somewhat too rounded. If it were a bit more robust, it would be perfect. That said, when parked in the lot, there are still many people asking me what car it is, so it definitely attracts attention. All in all, this car is truly suitable for use in Malaysia—comfortable interior, reliable performance, and a good-looking exterior. I recommend it to friends who are considering getting an SUV!

As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8V AT, having driven it in Malaysia for almost half a year, I’d like to share my thoughts on its performance and interior. Performance gets a rating of 4 out of 5, which is really "sufficient but not aggressive"—when dealing with traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, the CVT transmission is so smooth it feels like it doesn’t even shift gears. The 1.8L naturally aspirated engine is stable when following traffic and starting, neither jerky nor sluggish. On weekends, when driving family to mid-levels of Genting, flooring the accelerator during uphill climbs lacks the "push-back feeling" of a turbo, but once the RPMs go up, the power catches up. Even with a full load of 5 people and luggage, it didn’t feel particularly strained. However, on the highway, when trying to overtake, you need to accelerate in advance—139 horsepower after 120 km/h accelerates a bit "slowly," perhaps due to the nature of naturally aspirated engines. For daily use, it’s totally enough, but if you’re craving thrills, the hybrid version might be the better choice. The interior deserves a full 5-star rating! Stepping inside gives an immediate feeling of "full-on luxury"—the seats are made of leather, which feels soft and comfortable to the touch. As someone who commutes for an hour daily, I’ve never felt my back and hips getting tired. The 8-way power-adjustable front seat is extremely practical. As a petite girl, it only takes a few moments to adjust to a comfortable driving position. The 9-inch central control screen is quite responsive, and connecting to CarPlay works smoothly. Given how hot Malaysia’s weather is, being able to turn on the air conditioning with the remote key before getting into the car is such a thoughtful feature—it’s instantly cool once inside. After folding down the 60:40 back seats, I even managed to fit small furniture while helping a friend move. The space utilization is simply outstanding. Overall, this car fully meets my needs in Malaysia for "daily commuting + occasional outings." The details of the interior are far more refined compared to cars in the same price range, and although the performance isn’t stunning, its reliability and smooth power delivery make up for it. Toyota’s quality control certainly doesn’t disappoint!

Owner of 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8V AT
As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8V AT and having driven it in Malaysia for almost half a year, I’m quite satisfied overall. Starting with the interior, the layout of the center console is very clear, and the 9-inch touchscreen is very responsive. Using Apple CarPlay for navigation to KLCC or the Johor Bahru checkpoints is very convenient. The seats are leather, providing a comfortable seating experience, and the driver’s seat comes with an 8-way electric adjustment. For someone like me who often drives long distances, adjusting to a suitable position is very convenient. However, the interior feels a bit plasticky, especially the panel on the passenger side. If there were more soft materials, it would be even better. I’d rate this 4 stars. In terms of exterior, the design of this car matches my aesthetic quite well. The large front grille is very striking, and the LED headlights are especially bright at night, providing great recognition. The body lines are smooth, and with the 18-inch rims, it garners a fair amount of attention when driving along Penang’s coastal roads. However, the paintwork feels a bit thin. For instance, last time while parked by the roadside, a small flying pebble left a scratch, which is a minor regret. So, I’d give the exterior 4 stars as well. For performance, the 1.8L naturally aspirated engine is sufficient for city driving. It accelerates smoothly, and the CVT transmission shifts very seamlessly. It’s quite easy to manage during traffic jams, like during Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour when there’s a lot of stop-and-go. On the highway, it remains stable at 120 km/h, but further acceleration feels slightly lackluster, which is understandable for a naturally aspirated engine. The fuel consumption is decent as well, around 7-8 liters in the city and about 6 liters on the highway. For an SUV, this level of fuel efficiency is something I’m happy with, so I’d rate the performance 4 stars. Overall, this car performs well on Malaysian roads, meeting the needs for both city commuting and weekend road trips to destinations like Genting Highlands. It offers good value for money.

As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8V AT for almost half a year in Malaysia, what I want to praise the most is its safety features! After all, with so many motorcycles on Malaysian roads and unexpected situations, the car's seven airbags (even a knee airbag), lane departure warning, and active braking are all standard features. The other day in George Town, Penang, while stuck in traffic, the car in front of me suddenly braked abruptly, and my car automatically stopped—really saved me once! Plus, the lane change assist reminds you of cars nearby when changing lanes on the highway, absolutely boosting the sense of security. I'd give safety a full 5 out of 5 with no complaints. I'd rate the interior a 4 out of 5. The overall craftsmanship is fairly solid, the soft-touch materials on the dashboard feel comfortable, and the 9-inch central control screen is large enough to use with CarPlay, which is convenient. However, the rear seats are slightly hard. Last time I took my family to Genting Highlands, the elderly in the back seat said they felt a bit uncomfortable after sitting for over an hour. Additionally, the front passenger seat is still manually adjustable; it would be perfect if it could be changed to electric adjustment. But overall, for the price range, I'm already quite happy with the interior performance!
