In Malaysia's D-segment 7-seater SUV market, consumers generally expect a model that can balance daily commuting, family outings, and light off-road capabilities. The Toyota Fortuner series has always been a popular choice in this segment. The 2021 Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4, positioned as the mid-to-high-end petrol-powered variant, focuses on balanced configuration and practical performance. In this test drive, we will focus on evaluating its space performance, power adaptability, and whether the features meet the expectations at its price point.

In terms of appearance, the 2021 Fortuner 2.7 SRZ continues the rugged family style, with a tough and muscular overall line. The front features a large trapezoidal grille, adorned with chrome trim for a high degree of recognition. LED headlights and daytime running lights come standard, with a sharp design that offers clear visual effects when illuminated. On the side, the 4795mm length and 2745mm wheelbase ensure the foundation for a 7-seater layout, while 265/60 R18 tires paired with multi-spoke alloy wheels align with the SUV's robust positioning and provide sufficient ground clearance (279mm) to handle unpaved roads. At the rear, LED taillights adopt a vertical layout to echo the body lines, and the silver skid plate under the rear bumper adds a touch of off-road flair.

Inside, the interior is mainly in black, complemented by silver trims to enhance the sense of quality. The center console is designed with simplicity, featuring a 9-inch touchscreen in the center, which supports basic multimedia functions and a reverse camera. The operation smoothness meets expectations. In terms of features, the HUD head-up display, 4.2-inch color TFT instrument panel, keyless entry/start are standard and highly practical. For the seats, both the driver's seat and the front passenger seat support 8-way electric adjustment, offering moderate wrapping and support for comfortable long-distance seating. The second row adopts a 60:40 split design with one-touch folding, while the third row is a 50:50 split. Although the space is relatively tight for adults, short trips are manageable. Regarding storage space, compartments in door panels, the central armrest box, and other locations provide ample storage. The trunk offers a capacity of 200L with the 7-seat configuration, which can be expanded significantly by folding the third row to meet family cargo needs.

In terms of the powertrain, the 2.7L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power of 166PS (5200rpm) and a maximum torque of 245N·m (4000rpm), paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system. In day-to-day driving, the acceleration is relatively gentle, with power output favoring smoothness at low RPM, making it suitable for city commuting. When the RPM rises to around 4000, torque reaches its peak, and noticeable acceleration can be felt only with a firm press of the accelerator. The driving modes include Eco, Normal, and Sport options. In Sport mode, the transmission shifts are delayed for quicker throttle response, but the overall performance still emphasizes smoothness. As for handling, the steering wheel provides moderate resistance, minimal play, and clear directional precision. The combination of front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension effectively absorbs vibrations from urban road surfaces, maintaining vehicle stability. However, rear passengers may feel slight bumps when crossing speed humps. Regarding off-road performance, the 279mm ground clearance and four-wheel-drive system enable it to tackle light muddy or gravel roads, and the hill-assist function enhances confidence on unpaved roads.

In terms of fuel consumption, the measured fuel consumption under mixed road conditions is approximately 11-13L/100km, and it can drop to 9-10L/100km during highway cruising. This is considered a reasonable range for a vehicle weighing 2.02 tons. Regarding noise control, there is significant engine noise transmitted into the cabin at high RPMs, but tire and wind noise suppression is good during daily urban driving. Overall, the NVH performance meets the average level for vehicles in this segment.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2021 Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4 lie in its balanced configuration, practical 7-seat space, and reliable four-wheel-drive system. Compared to the 2.4L diesel version in the same series, it offers a smoother power output and eliminates concerns regarding the maintenance costs of diesel vehicles. Compared to the higher-spec 2.8L VRZ diesel version, although it lacks active safety features, such as lane departure warning or active braking, it is approximately 30,000 MYR cheaper, making it more cost-effective.

This vehicle is suitable for family users who prioritize practicality and reliability, especially those who need a 7-seat layout for multi-member outings and occasionally require light off-road capabilities. Its space performance, configuration level, and durability can meet the needs of daily commuting, family trips, and weekend short-distance off-road activities.

Overall, the 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4 is a well-rounded 7-seater SUV with no obvious shortcomings. With Toyota’s brand reliability and practical product strength, it remains highly competitive in the D-Segment market.

Pros
The safety configuration is practical and reliable. The vehicle stability system and multiple airbags can effectively ensure the safety of drivers and passengers in emergencies.
The interior design focuses on practicality, with large and clear physical buttons that allow blind operation. The rear air conditioning and USB interface are thoughtful.
The exterior is rugged and imposing, with high recognition and matches user aesthetics, attracting attention on Malaysian roads.
Cons
The interior contains a lot of plastic parts, and the materials on the lower part of the center console and door panels feel cheap, with some areas prone to hand scratches.
The center control screen occasionally reacts slowly, and the system's fluidity needs improvement.
Some models lack active braking functionality, posing safety concerns in road conditions with many motorcycles.

Owner of 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.4 AT 4x4
As the owner of the 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.4 AT 4x4 and having driven it for almost two years in Malaysia, I’d like to talk about two key aspects: the interior and safety. I’d give the interior 4 stars for being “practical but not stunning” — after all, it’s a rugged SUV, so there’s quite a bit of plastic, especially on the lower part of the dashboard and door panels, which feels a bit cheap to the touch. However, the design is very practical. For someone like me who often drives on the bumpy roads of East Malaysia’s Sabah, the physical buttons on the dashboard are large and clear, making them easy to operate even while wearing gloves. The response of the 9-inch touchscreen is fairly quick, and even when using CarPlay navigation to drive to a small town at the foot of Mount Kinabalu, it didn’t drop connection. The rear air conditioning vents and USB ports are very thoughtful, so when driving my family around Penang Island, my kids in the back can play on their phones without asking to make frequent stops. The safety aspect deserves full marks! Last month, while driving on the highway in Johor during a heavy downpour, the road was extremely slippery. When I swerved suddenly to avoid a motorcycle changing lanes abruptly, the vehicle stability control immediately kicked in. The car swayed slightly but stabilized — if I had been driving my old car, I’d probably have lost control. Another time in Kuala Lumpur, I was rear-ended, and three of the seven airbags deployed. Neither my wife in the passenger seat nor I was hurt at all. Features like lane change assist are especially useful on the congested elevated roads in Subang Jaya, helping to detect motorcycles in blind spots. Hill-start assist on the steep slopes of Cameron Highlands prevents rolling back into the car behind when starting on an incline. All in all, while the interior isn’t luxurious, it is durable. The safety features are truly lifesaving, and in a country like Malaysia with its complex road conditions, driving this car to take my family out brings great peace of mind.

Owner of 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4
As the owner of the 2021 Fortuner 2.7 SRZ, having driven it for almost two years, I would rate its safety and interior performance 4 out of 5 under Malaysia's road conditions, which is quite satisfactory. Regarding safety, the 7 airbags and vehicle stability control as standard features are very reliable. Last time on the LDP Highway in KL, I encountered a car suddenly switching lanes, and the vehicle stability control responded quickly without losing control. Last week, while taking my family to Genting Highlands, the hill-start assist was very helpful in the steep parking lot, eliminating the worry of rollback. However, having automatic emergency braking would make it perfect, as there are really a lot of motorcycles in Malaysia, and it can still be a bit stressful when they suddenly dash out. As for the interior, the 7-seater layout is very family-friendly for those of us who frequently carry parents and children. The second-row one-touch fold and third-row one-touch stow functions make it very convenient for transporting strollers or buying furniture at IKEA. The front power seats and automatic air conditioning are also very practical, making it much more comfortable during traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur. However, the plastic feel does stand out, especially on the lower part of the dashboard. It doesn’t feel very refined to the touch, and it would be better if there were more soft-touch materials. Overall, as a family SUV, its performance in these two aspects is quite good and meets the expectations for this price range.

Owner of 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4
As the owner of the 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4, after almost two years of driving it in Malaysia, what I love the most is its appearance! Every time I park it in front of a Lotus supermarket or on the old streets of George Town in Penang, it really garners a lot of attention — the tough body lines coupled with the 18-inch large wheels, especially with the LED headlights lit up, it stands out in the evening traffic in Kuala Lumpur. It's perfectly in line with the aesthetics of us Malaysians who love bold and robust SUVs; giving it a 5 out of 5 is not an exaggeration! For the interior, I’d rate it a 4 out of 5. The overall craftsmanship is quite solid, and the leather seats remain comfortable even after long durations, with the 8-way electric adjustment proving useful for someone like me who often drives on the mountainous roads of East Malaysia, Sabah. It allows always having a comfortable sitting posture. However, the plastic feel of the center console is slightly heavy, especially the hard plastic panel on the passenger side, where placing items might sometimes feel a bit rough on the hands. Additionally, the 9-inch infotainment screen occasionally responds a bit sluggishly. If only the material quality and system responsiveness could be further optimized, it would be perfect. Nonetheless, at this price point, having a 7-seater layout and independent rear air conditioning is great for family trips to Genting Highlands or Cameron Highlands in Malaysia!

Owner of 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.8 VRZ AT 4x4
As the owner of the 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.8 VRZ AT 4x4, having driven it in Malaysia for nearly two years, I genuinely feel like I made the right choice with this car! First, the exterior definitely gets a 5 out of 5 without hesitation — the rugged muscular lines combined with the 18-inch large wheels give it amazing recognition on the roads of KL. Every time I park at a shopping mall in Jalan Bukit Bintang, I can feel the heads turning to check it out. My friends even call it a "small tank on the road," which makes it super cool! The interior deserves 4 out of 5, primarily focused on practicality: the 9-inch central control screen operates smoothly, and using CarPlay navigation to head up to Genting Highlands is so convenient. The electric front seats are comfortable for long highway drives without causing fatigue, and the independent rear air conditioning is a lifesaver in Malaysia's constant 30-something degree weather. Just last week, I took the whole family on a road trip to Penang—three hours of driving, and neither the elderly nor the kids complained about feeling hot. The only minor downside is that the center console has a bit of hard plastic, but it doesn’t affect daily usage, so overall I’m quite satisfied. In terms of performance, it also scores 4 out of 5. The 2.8T diesel engine is truly sufficient for Malaysia’s road conditions. For instance, when overtaking on rural roads in Selangor, you can feel the kickback as soon as you step on the accelerator. Last month during a trip to Cameron Highlands, the gearbox smoothly tackled the uphill climbs without any struggle at all. Fuel consumption is around 14L/100km, which is slightly higher than the official figure, but considering Malaysia’s frequent traffic jams and the fact that I occasionally carry seven passengers, this performance is more than acceptable. Overall, this car delivers in both practicality and aesthetics for Malaysia, making it a great choice for a family vehicle!
