Specs

Nowadays, the competition in Malaysia's D-segment SUV market is becoming increasingly segmented. Consumers want the texture of high-end models while valuing the reliability and fuel efficiency for long-term use. The 2023 Toyota Harrier 2.0 Luxury perfectly targets these needs, focusing on optimized fuel consumption, comprehensive intelligent configurations, and mature mechanical tuning as its core selling points. This time, we conducted an in-depth test drive to see if it can hold its ground among vehicles in the same price range.

In terms of appearance, the 2023 Harrier continues its previous streamlined design, with clean lines running from the hood to the rear without excessive sharp edges, maintaining the elegant feel of a mid-size SUV. At the front, the large lower grille paired with slender LED daytime running lights ensures high recognition; at the rear, the LED tail lights adopt a through-type design, providing clear visual effects when lit at night. The body dimensions are 4740mm×1855mm×1660mm with a wheelbase of 2690mm, which is 30mm longer than the 2018 model. The side proportions are more balanced, and the 225/60 R18 tire specifications match the body size without looking top-heavy.

Sitting inside, the interior adopts a driver-oriented central console layout, with materials primarily composed of soft-touch plastics and leather, providing a nice texture to touch. The 7-inch color TFT instrument panel displays information clearly, and together with the HUD head-up display, allows the driver to access information such as speed and navigation without needing to look down. The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system operates smoothly; while not the largest in its class, it offers all the basic functions. In terms of configurations, the driver's seat features 12-way electric adjustment while the passenger seat has 4-way electric adjustment, providing enough support for long drives to reduce fatigue. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning system with rear air vents allows rear passengers to adjust the temperature independently. Regarding storage space, the front central armrest box has a moderate capacity, the door panel storage compartments can hold two large bottles of water, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split folding design. When folded, the trunk space expands to meet family storage needs.

In terms of powertrain, the 2023 Harrier 2.0 Luxury is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine that delivers a maximum horsepower of 173 PS and a peak torque of 203 N·m, paired with a CVT transmission. During daily driving, the initial response is smooth, without the abruptness of turbocharged models. The acceleration is linear, and the power is sufficient for urban road conditions at low and medium speeds. When the accelerator is pressed hard, the engine revs gradually increase; although there isn't a strong push-back sensation, the power output can keep up for overtaking if acceleration is anticipated. Three driving modes are available: Eco, Normal, and Sport. In Eco mode, throttle response is slightly less sensitive, making it suitable for daily commuting. In Sport mode, the engine maintains higher RPMs, providing more direct power output.

Regarding handling, the front MacPherson and rear double-wishbone suspension setup is tuned for comfort. When passing speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension absorbs most minor vibrations, reducing the sense of bumps for rear passengers. The steering wheel is light and offers moderately precise steering without excessive play, making parking or making U-turns relatively easy. At high speeds, the vehicle's stability is excellent, and the steering wheel shows no significant vibration at speeds of 120km/h. Fuel efficiency is a highlight, with an official combined consumption of 6.5L/100km. During the test drive, city conditions yielded about 7.2L/100km, while highway conditions achieved around 5.8L/100km. This represents a significant improvement compared to the 2021 model’s 8.3L/100km. With a 55L fuel tank capacity, the vehicle offers a range of approximately 800km, making it suitable for long-distance travel.

In terms of sound insulation, when the speed is below 60km/h, the cabin noise is well-controlled, and tire noise and engine noise are not noticeable; when the speed exceeds 80km/h, wind noise will enter from the A-pillars, but it does not affect normal conversations. Regarding safety features, 7 airbags, full-speed range ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and active braking are all standard configurations, providing sufficient safety assurance during daily driving.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2023 Toyota Harrier 2.0 Luxury lies in its balanced performance: optimized fuel consumption, comprehensive configurations, and reliable mechanical quality. Compared to competitors of the same class, it does not have any particularly prominent weaknesses. Although its power output is not very strong, it is entirely sufficient for daily family use. In terms of price, the RM 274,000 price tag has increased compared to the 2021 model, but the improvements in fuel consumption and configurations can offset some of the price impact. This car is suitable for family users who value practicality and long-term reliability, especially those who frequently go on long trips or are sensitive to fuel consumption. If you are looking for a mid-size SUV with an elegant appearance, comprehensive configurations, and low fuel consumption, the 2023 Harrier 2.0 Luxury would be a good choice.

Pros
The power performance is excellent, the 2.0T turbo kicks in early with sufficient torque, and the 2.0 naturally aspirated engine is smooth and linear, suitable for urban driving and highway overtaking.
The safety configuration is practical; features like autonomous emergency braking and lane departure warning have prevented accidents multiple times, and the 7 airbags provide basic protection.
The interior is comfortable and luxurious, with leather seats that have electric adjustments and lumbar support, dual-zone air conditioning that cools quickly, and nanoe technology to purify the air.
Cons
The central control screen of some models is small (7-8 inches) and lacks CarPlay or has connection lag, affecting navigation and operation experience.
Some models lack 360-degree panoramic imaging, making parking in narrow spaces challenging and reducing convenience when reversing.
Acceleration in the later stages on the highway feels weak, and the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine requires deep throttle input when exceeding 120 km/h or climbing hills with a full load, showing limited power reserve.

Owner of 2018 Toyota Harrier 2.0T Luxury
As the owner of a 2018 Toyota Harrier 2.0T Luxury, driving it in Malaysia for almost five years, what I am most satisfied with is its performance! The 2.0T turbocharged engine delivers maximum torque at just 1650 RPM, making it particularly easy to follow other cars during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour. A light press on the accelerator brings a quick response, without feeling sluggish. On the North-South Expressway, it performs great for overtaking, with power continuously surging after the RPM hits 5000. A top speed of 180km/h is entirely sufficient for highway drives, and a combined fuel consumption of 7.6L in the D-Segment is considered fuel-efficient. A full 60L tank can easily last for over 700 kilometers. In terms of safety, I’d rate it 4 out of 5, mainly because it only has a rear-view camera and not a 360-degree surround view, which can be a bit challenging in Malaysia’s narrow public housing car parks. However, the seven airbags, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking are all very practical. Once in George Town, Penang, I encountered a motorcycle suddenly crossing the road, and the autonomous emergency braking intervened in time to prevent an accident. This feature deserves praise. Regarding the interior, the dual-zone automatic air conditioning with nanoe technology is particularly helpful in Malaysia's hot and humid climate; it cools quickly and purifies the air. The electrically adjustable seats and the 60:40 split-folding rear seats are very practical; when transporting large items, folding down the rear seats expands the space. However, the 7-inch central control screen now seems a bit small, and the absence of CarPlay is a slight regret, so I deducted 1 point for this. Overall, this car performs very well under road conditions in Malaysia. It has outstanding performance, sufficient safety features, and a comfortable interior. It’s an SUV that is very suitable for family use.

Owner of 2018 Toyota Harrier 2.0T Luxury
As the owner of the 2018 Toyota Harrier 2.0T Luxury and having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, I truly feel like I made the right choice with this car! First, let’s talk about the exterior. Its sleek design and LED headlights make it highly recognizable in the traffic flow of KL (Kuala Lumpur). Every time I park it in front of Pavilion Mall, people always take a second look. The sense of luxury is off the charts. Absolutely a 5-star for this! The safety features give me peace of mind, especially considering the unexpected lane changes you sometimes encounter on Malaysian highways. Its standard lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking have genuinely saved me once: last month on the North-South Expressway, the car in front suddenly braked hard, and before I could react, my car had already slowed down and stopped on its own. With 7 airbags and a stability control system, the sense of security is undeniable — definitely 5 stars! I’m giving the performance 4 stars because while the 2.0T turbo is more than sufficient for city driving — especially during the KL morning rush, where the throttle response is quick and not sluggish — the acceleration feels a bit weak when exceeding 160km/h on the highway. After all, the top speed is 180, which is absolutely fine for daily use but might fall short for those seeking that push-back-in-your-seat feeling. Overall, this car is incredibly comfortable to drive given Malaysia’s road conditions. The exterior and safety are impeccable, and its performance fully meets the needs of a family car. Definitely worth getting!

Owner of 2023 Toyota Harrier 2.0 Luxury SE
As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Harrier 2.0 Luxury SE and having driven it in Malaysia for more than half a year, here are my real feelings to share! I give 4 points for the appearance. The streamlined body combined with LED headlights attracts quite a lot of attention when driving around Kuala Lumpur, but the paint is relatively thin. Last time, a small stone left a dent when parked by the roadside, which is a bit disappointing. For performance, I would also give 4 points. The 2.0L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT transmission is sufficient for climbing the hilly roads in Penang, although it does feel a bit sluggish during rapid acceleration. However, it offers smooth performance for daily commuting and highway cruising. The fuel consumption is about 6.8L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure, but given Malaysian road conditions, it's quite decent. As for safety, it deserves 5 points! With 7 airbags and a full suite of active safety systems, it saved my life once when the automatic emergency braking intervened just in time to avoid a rear-end collision on the highway in Selangor. There's also the 360-degree panoramic view, which is particularly convenient for parking in Kuala Lumpur's narrow parking lots. Overall, this car is very hassle-free to use in Malaysia, and its safety features are especially reassuring!

Owner of 2018 Toyota Harrier 2.0T Luxury
As the owner of the 2018 Harrier 2.0T Luxury, having driven it for nearly two years, I am quite satisfied with its interior and performance. Giving it a 4-star rating isn't too much, right? Let’s talk about the interior first. The first feeling when you sit inside is "super high-end!" Especially that nanoe dual-zone air conditioning. Malaysia is hot and humid all year round, and after turning on the air conditioning in the car, the stuffiness and odors inside are gone in no time. Even the smell of my kid’s snacks gets removed, which is really practical. The seats are electrically adjustable, so when driving long distances, adjusting it to a comfortable angle means no back pain. The rear seats can also recline manually, and my wife often reclines in the back to take care of the kids, saying it’s even more comfortable than the sofa at home. However, the only regret is that the central control screen is only 7 inches, which does feel a bit small now. It would be perfect if it could be bigger~ Now let’s talk about the performance. The 2.0T power is really sufficient for Malaysian road conditions! When driving in KL’s traffic jams, it accelerates lightly and doesn’t feel "sluggish." On weekends, when taking the family to Genting Highlands, the turbo kicks in very smoothly when climbing hills, and the maximum torque is unleashed at 1650 RPM, giving great confidence for overtaking or lane changes. The fuel consumption is also better than I expected, around 8.5L in the city, and about 7L on highways. It’s a pleasant surprise for such a big car. However, since it’s front-wheel drive, you can sometimes feel a slight understeer when turning on rainy days, but for everyday driving, it’s not a problem at all. Overall, it performs very steadily~ All in all, this car is quite suitable whether it’s for family use or personal driving, and its interior and performance have not disappointed me!

Owner of 2018 Toyota Harrier 2.0T Premium
As the owner of a 2018 Toyota Harrier 2.0T Premium, having driven it in Malaysia for almost five years, I truly feel that I made the right choice with this car! Let’s talk about the exterior first. I was initially drawn to its design — the sleek body paired with sharp LED headlights really stands out. Whether driving on Jalan Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur or along the coastal roads in Penang, it never fails to turn heads. Especially the floating roof design, which looks particularly refined under the Southeast Asian sunlight. My friends even say it looks more “premium” compared to other SUVs in the same price range, perfectly matching my aesthetic expectations for a D-segment vehicle. Now onto the performance: The 2.0T engine is definitely sufficient for Malaysia’s road conditions! On the highways in Selangor, overtaking is as simple as lightly pressing the accelerator, and when the turbo kicks in, the push-back feeling is very noticeable. Cruising at 120km/h is also very stable. What surprised me the most is the suspension system. With the combination of MacPherson struts at the front and double wishbone suspension at the rear, it absorbs bumps remarkably well. Driving through the pothole-filled old streets of Kuala Lumpur or the road bumps on highways in Johor Bahru doesn't feel uncomfortable at all. Plus, the fuel consumption is better than I expected — about 8.5L/100km in city traffic, and around 7L on highways. For a car weighing 1.7 tons, this performance is very satisfactory. In summary, whether it’s the looks or the driving experience, this Harrier has never disappointed me and has been especially reliable for use in Malaysia!
