Toyota Harrier Review

Nowadays, the competition in Malaysia's D-segment SUV market is becoming increasingly segmented. Consumers want the texture of high-end models while valuing the reliability and fuel efficiency for long-term use. The 2023 Toyota Harrier 2.0 Luxury perfectly targets these needs, focusing on optimized fuel consumption, comprehensive intelligent configurations, and mature mechanical tuning as its core selling points. This time, we conducted an in-depth test drive to see if it can hold its ground among vehicles in the same price range.
In terms of appearance, the 2023 Harrier continues its previous streamlined design, with clean lines running from the hood to the rear without excessive sharp edges, maintaining the elegant feel of a mid-size SUV. At the front, the large lower grille paired with slender LED daytime running lights ensures high recognition; at the rear, the LED tail lights adopt a through-type design, providing clear visual effects when lit at night. The body dimensions are 4740mm×1855mm×1660mm with a wheelbase of 2690mm, which is 30mm longer than the 2018 model. The side proportions are more balanced, and the 225/60 R18 tire specifications match the body size without looking top-heavy.
Sitting inside, the interior adopts a driver-oriented central console layout, with materials primarily composed of soft-touch plastics and leather, providing a nice texture to touch. The 7-inch color TFT instrument panel displays information clearly, and together with the HUD head-up display, allows the driver to access information such as speed and navigation without needing to look down. The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system operates smoothly; while not the largest in its class, it offers all the basic functions. In terms of configurations, the driver's seat features 12-way electric adjustment while the passenger seat has 4-way electric adjustment, providing enough support for long drives to reduce fatigue. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning system with rear air vents allows rear passengers to adjust the temperature independently. Regarding storage space, the front central armrest box has a moderate capacity, the door panel storage compartments can hold two large bottles of water, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split folding design. When folded, the trunk space expands to meet family storage needs.
In terms of powertrain, the 2023 Harrier 2.0 Luxury is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine that delivers a maximum horsepower of 173 PS and a peak torque of 203 N·m, paired with a CVT transmission. During daily driving, the initial response is smooth, without the abruptness of turbocharged models. The acceleration is linear, and the power is sufficient for urban road conditions at low and medium speeds. When the accelerator is pressed hard, the engine revs gradually increase; although there isn't a strong push-back sensation, the power output can keep up for overtaking if acceleration is anticipated. Three driving modes are available: Eco, Normal, and Sport. In Eco mode, throttle response is slightly less sensitive, making it suitable for daily commuting. In Sport mode, the engine maintains higher RPMs, providing more direct power output.
Regarding handling, the front MacPherson and rear double-wishbone suspension setup is tuned for comfort. When passing speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension absorbs most minor vibrations, reducing the sense of bumps for rear passengers. The steering wheel is light and offers moderately precise steering without excessive play, making parking or making U-turns relatively easy. At high speeds, the vehicle's stability is excellent, and the steering wheel shows no significant vibration at speeds of 120km/h. Fuel efficiency is a highlight, with an official combined consumption of 6.5L/100km. During the test drive, city conditions yielded about 7.2L/100km, while highway conditions achieved around 5.8L/100km. This represents a significant improvement compared to the 2021 model’s 8.3L/100km. With a 55L fuel tank capacity, the vehicle offers a range of approximately 800km, making it suitable for long-distance travel.
In terms of sound insulation, when the speed is below 60km/h, the cabin noise is well-controlled, and tire noise and engine noise are not noticeable; when the speed exceeds 80km/h, wind noise will enter from the A-pillars, but it does not affect normal conversations. Regarding safety features, 7 airbags, full-speed range ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and active braking are all standard configurations, providing sufficient safety assurance during daily driving.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2023 Toyota Harrier 2.0 Luxury lies in its balanced performance: optimized fuel consumption, comprehensive configurations, and reliable mechanical quality. Compared to competitors of the same class, it does not have any particularly prominent weaknesses. Although its power output is not very strong, it is entirely sufficient for daily family use. In terms of price, the RM 274,000 price tag has increased compared to the 2021 model, but the improvements in fuel consumption and configurations can offset some of the price impact. This car is suitable for family users who value practicality and long-term reliability, especially those who frequently go on long trips or are sensitive to fuel consumption. If you are looking for a mid-size SUV with an elegant appearance, comprehensive configurations, and low fuel consumption, the 2023 Harrier 2.0 Luxury would be a good choice.
