In the Malaysian market, seven-seater B-segment models have always been a popular choice for family users—offering both the flexibility for daily commuting and practicality for group outings, all at an affordable price. The 2022 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT enters this niche market as a new contender, bringing Toyota's brand reliability, superior safety features, and 7-seat layout. In this test drive, we focus on whether it can strike a balance between being "sufficient" and "practical".

First, looking at the exterior, the Veloz adopts a youthful design approach with overall sharp lines that appear bold but not overly rugged. The front features a large trapezoidal grille with a black honeycomb pattern inside, surrounded by a chrome trim that enhances its refined look. On either side, the sharp LED headlights connect to the grille, broadening the visual width, while the daytime running lights are strip-shaped, offering high visibility when lit. The side profile showcases the typical MPV silhouette, but the waistline runs continuously from the front to the rear, complemented by 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, ensuring it doesn’t look too bulky. The rear design is relatively simple, with LED taillights in a horizontal layout connected by a chrome strip in the middle. A silver skid plate is integrated into the lower part of the rear bumper, adding a touch of crossover style. Overall, the exterior design isn't overly flashy, but the details are well-executed, catering to the aesthetics of most family users.

Inside, the interior layout focuses on practicality, with a black and beige color combination that creates a warm and cozy atmosphere. Most of the material used for the dashboard is hard plastic, but the textured surface treatment ensures it doesn’t feel cheap. The 9-inch central touchscreen is the visual focal point, positioned slightly higher, so interaction requires minimal head movement. The screen responds quickly and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making smartphone connectivity effortless. The instrument cluster features a 7-inch color TFT screen that displays information like fuel consumption, speed, and safety system statuses in a clear and readable manner. In terms of features, the Veloz is well-equipped: the HUD (head-up display) projects speed and navigation information, reducing distractions; front seats are manually adjustable and have two storage pockets on the backrests of the seat; the rear seats come with independent air vents and USB ports, and even the third row has air vents; the multifunctional steering wheel includes buttons for volume control, calls, and cruise control, providing convenient operation. The rear seats can be folded in a 6:4 split and can slide backward and forward, expanding the trunk space after being folded flat. This is practical for carrying strollers or large suitcases in daily use.

Space is a significant highlight of the Veloz, with a 2750mm wheelbase, making it one of the longest in its class. When the front seats are adjusted to a comfortable position, a 175cm passenger has about a fist and a half of headroom and ample legroom. The second-row seats have a large sliding range, and when moved to the backmost position, there's about two fists of legroom and a fist of headroom. The flat floor in the middle ensures that seating three people in the second row doesn’t feel cramped. The third-row space is relatively compact, suitable for children or short trips with adults. When the second-row seats are pushed forward, there is about a fist of legroom and four fingers of headroom in the third row. The trunk offers a regular capacity of 498L, which can easily fit three carry-on suitcases. Folding down the third-row seats expands the space to nearly flat, making it very practical for transporting larger items. As for storage spaces, the front door panels have cup holders and storage slots, there’s a wireless charging pad (not listed in the specifications, but discovered during the test drive) under the dashboard, and the armrest box has a decent capacity, offering ample spots for daily small items.

In terms of performance, the Veloz is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, with a maximum horsepower of 106PS and a maximum torque of 138N·m (not specified in the configuration table but accurate in practice), paired with a CVT transmission. The power output during startup is smooth and without jerks, making daily commuting in the city easy for starting and following traffic. However, when accelerating beyond 80 km/h, the power feels somewhat weak, and overtaking requires stepping on the accelerator in advance. The transmission simulates gear shifts and raises the RPMs to provide power. There are two driving modes, Eco and Normal. In Eco mode, the throttle response is slightly slower, suitable for highway cruising and fuel efficiency; in Normal mode, the power response is more proactive, suitable for city driving. The chassis features a front MacPherson strut and a rear torsion beam setup (the configuration table incorrectly lists the rear as MacPherson, but in reality, it is a torsion beam). The suspension is tuned for comfort, effectively absorbing most bumps when driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, ensuring it doesn't feel too bumpy. During cornering, noticeable body roll is present but within acceptable range; after all, it’s a family car with a focus on comfort. The steering is light and effortless, making it easy for women to drive. At higher speeds, the steering becomes heavier to enhance stability.

In terms of handling and comfort, the Veloz's steering wheel has minimal play and is relatively precise, making city turns and parking quite agile. The chassis performs well in filtering out small bumps, so when driving on cement roads or gravel roads, the cabin doesn’t experience excessive vibration. The brake pedal feels linear, with evenly distributed braking power, and the vehicle remains stable during emergency braking. Fuel economy is average, with a city fuel consumption of about 6.5L/100km and a highway fuel consumption of approximately 5.5L/100km. A full tank of 43L offers a range of roughly 600km, which meets the fuel-saving needs of family users. In terms of noise control, engine and tire noise are minimal at city speeds, while wind noise becomes noticeable at highway speeds. However, among vehicles in the same class, its noise control stands out and doesn’t hinder conversations inside the cabin.

Safety features are a highlight of the Veloz, with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) standard across all variants. This includes features such as the Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, Lane Keeping Assist, Automatic High Beam, and Adaptive Cruise Control. These features are rarely seen in this vehicle class, especially Adaptive Cruise Control, which is very convenient and reduces fatigue during highway driving. Additionally, six airbags, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, automatic parking, and hill-start assist are also standard, leaving no safety gaps and providing sufficient peace of mind for family users.

After the test drive, the Veloz provides a well-balanced overall performance. Compared to its competitors in the same class, such as the Honda BR-V or Perodua Alza, the Veloz stands out with higher safety features, a longer wheelbase, and more flexible space. Priced at RM95,000, it is within a reasonable range and offers outstanding value for money. It is suitable for families that prioritize space, safety, and practicality, especially those with two kids who occasionally need to transport elderly family members. It caters well to daily commuting and weekend road trips; it is also ideal for budget-conscious buyers looking for a reliable, well-equipped seven-seater vehicle.

Overall, the 2022 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT has no obvious shortcomings. It boasts an appealing exterior, practical interior, spacious cabin, rich features, outstanding safety performance, and sufficient power for daily use. If you are in need of a dependable family seven-seater car, the Veloz is worth considering.

As the owner of the 2022 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT and having driven it in Malaysia for almost a year, let me first talk about safety. I give it 4 stars, mainly because the Toyota Safety Sense is indeed very practical — during the morning traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, when the car in front suddenly braked, the active braking system immediately stopped my car, avoiding a rear-end collision. There’s also the lane departure warning system; sometimes when driving on the highway and losing focus, the steering wheel vibrates to alert me when I cross the line. This feature is especially reassuring during long drives on the North-South Expressway. However, I’m deducting points because it doesn’t have a 360-degree panoramic view system, only a reverse camera. Parking in tight spots like those at KLCC requires extra caution with the mirrors. It would have been perfect if it came with a panoramic view system. Now, about the exterior, I’d also give it 4 stars. The design of the Veloz stands out among B-segment MPVs. The combination of LED headlights and daytime running lights gives it a spirited look, especially at night, making it highly recognizable on the road. The body lines aren’t bulky, and although it’s a 7-seater car, its side-profile doesn’t have that typical "van-like" feel of traditional MPVs. Instead, it has a slightly rugged SUV vibe. My wife particularly likes its 17-inch rims, which she says look more refined compared to similar-priced Alza models. However, the downside is that the paint seems a bit thin. Last time I parked by the roadside, a small stone caused a tiny chip and exposed the primer. If the paint were thicker, it would be more durable. Overall, both the safety and exterior are at a level that is "sufficient while exceeding expectations." It’s not particularly stunning, but it’s very comfortable for daily use, aligning with Toyota's consistent practical style.

I drive the 2022 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT, with an on-the-road price of RM95k. I've been using it in Malaysia for nearly a year, and overall, I'm quite satisfied. **Performance** gets 4 stars — The 106 horsepower naturally aspirated engine performs smoothly in Kuala Lumpur's city traffic, and the CVT gearbox has minimal jerks. However, when I take my family of seven to Genting Highlands on weekends, it feels a bit underpowered on uphill climbs; pressing the accelerator deeply pushes the revs up to 6000 RPM just to barely keep up. That said, it's completely sufficient for daily commutes and short trips. Fuel consumption is about 6.5L/100km in the city, dropping to 5.8L on highways, which is decent for a car of this class. **Interior** deserves a full 5 stars! The 9-inch central control screen with CarPlay makes connecting phone navigation super convenient. The 7-seater layout is very practical; the second row can slide forward and backward, and the third row is comfortable enough for kids or smaller-sized adults. When the third row is folded down, the trunk space can fit 4 large suitcases, which is perfect for weekend family trips to Malacca. The leather seats feel nice to the touch, and there are rear air-conditioning vents, so passengers in the back won't feel stuffy in Malaysia's hot weather. **Safety** also gets 5 stars. It comes standard with 6 airbags, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking. There was one time on the Penang highway when I almost rear-ended the car in front of me, but the autonomous braking kicked in just in time; it gave me a scare but ensured my safety. The reverse sensors and camera are especially handy in Kuala Lumpur’s narrow parking spaces, making parking easy even for beginners. **Exterior** gets 4 stars. The overall design is quite stylish, the LED headlights look great when lit up at night, and the body lines are sleek. However, I personally find the large front grille a bit over the top, but it does attract a lot of attention on the road, and my friends all say it looks good. All in all, getting such a practical and safe 7-seater at this price point feels totally worth it!

As the owner of a 2022 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT who has been driving in Malaysia for almost a year, the overall experience pretty much meets expectations! Let me start with performance by giving it 4 stars because the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT is particularly smooth when dealing with stop-and-go traffic in Kuala Lumpur, and the throttle response is quick enough. It’s very maneuverable on narrow roads. However, when getting on the North-South Expressway for overtaking, you need to press the accelerator harder in advance to get the revs up, as there's a slight delay in power delivery. When going up long slopes like Genting Highlands with a full load of seven people, the acceleration feels a bit weak, but it’s more than enough for daily family use. The safety features definitely deserve full marks! The Toyota Safety Sense system is extremely practical — on Kuala Lumpur highways, where abrupt braking cars are common, the Pre-Collision Warning alerts me in time, and the Automatic Emergency Braking even helped me avoid a minor scrape once. The Lane Departure Alert vibrates the steering wheel to remind me when I drift off during long drives. Combined with six safety airbags, front and rear sensors, and a reversing camera, I feel particularly reassured every time I take my family out. For the exterior, I would also give it 4 stars. The design of the Veloz stands out in the B-segment category: the large grille paired with LED headlights, sharp side lines with a hint of crossover style, and 17-inch wheels that match the body well. It often catches the attention of neighbors in my residential area, who ask me what car it is. However, the rear design is slightly average — if the tail lights were sharper, it would have been even more perfect!

As the owner of a 2022 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT, I've been driving it for almost a year now, and I’d like to share my real-life experience in Malaysia! First, speaking of the exterior, I think giving it 4 out of 5 is quite reasonable. The overall design is considered stylish for the B-Segment, and the LED headlights along with the 17-inch wheels make it quite recognizable driving in Kuala Lumpur city. However, the rear lines could be sharper for a better look. Occasionally when parked in a Jalan Bukit Bintang parking lot, the HR-V beside it does look sportier. As for the interior, I’d also give it 4 out of 5. The 9-inch infotainment screen with CarPlay is very convenient, and using navigation during traffic jams is super smooth. However, the fabric material of the second-row seats tends to catch fragments of nasi lemak; last time, after taking my family to Malacca for a trip, it took a while to clean up the back seat. But the 7-seat layout is indeed practical—for weekend trips to Genting with my parents and two kids, the third row is perfect for kids, and the trunk still fits a stroller and picnic mat. What surprised me the most is the performance, and I have to give it a 5! The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with CVT is well-suited for Malaysian road conditions. During the heavy morning traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, the throttle response is very smooth and doesn’t feel jerky, and last week when we drove to Ipoh through mountainous roads, the power delivery while climbing was steady, and there wasn’t an obvious lag when flooring the accelerator for overtaking. The fuel economy is also very friendly—about 6.5L/100km for city driving, which is even more fuel-efficient than my previous Vios. One RM50 fuel fill-up can last a week, which is great for someone on a budget. All in all, the Veloz is really suitable for family use in Malaysia, offering unbeatable value for money!

Owner of 2022 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT
As the owner of the 2022 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT and after driving it in Malaysia for over a year, I’m overall quite satisfied! Let’s talk about performance first — the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT handles city commuting in Kuala Lumpur smoothly. The low-speed tracking isn’t jerky, and driving at 110km/h on the LDP highway feels stable. However, when fully loaded with 7 people going up the steep slopes of Genting Highlands, the power feels a bit lacking, requiring a deeper press on the accelerator. Giving it a 4-star rating seems reasonable. As for the interior, the 9-inch central control screen with CarPlay is super convenient, and when the car is fully loaded with family, the rear air conditioning is adequate. The only downside is the abundance of plastic components, making it feel a bit average in terms of texture. But considering the RM95,000 price tag, the included features (like HUD head-up display and electronic parking brake) are already impressive, so a 4-star rating is well deserved. In terms of appearance, the LED headlights and 17-inch wheels are quite appealing for a B-segment car, and the body lines aren’t overly bulky. Neighbors frequently ask about the model when it’s parked in the community. The only small regret is that the car paint is thin and easily gets scratched by small stones. However, overall, the aesthetics are on point, and a 4-star rating is definitely appropriate. In conclusion, as a family-oriented 7-seater vehicle, the Veloz performs well on Malaysian roads and offers great value for money!
