The B-segment MPV market in Malaysia has always been a fiercely contested segment among family users. This type of vehicle needs to balance space, features, and practicality, while keeping the price within the budget of an average household. The 2023 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT, as a popular player in this segment, stands out with its seven-seater layout, rich intelligent safety configurations, and Toyota's renowned reliability. Many consumers want to know if it can truly meet the needs of various scenarios. In this test drive, we focused on testing its space practicality, performance, and daily driving comfort to see if it deserves the label "first choice for families."

In terms of appearance, the Veloz's design leans towards a youthful style, with overall rigid lines. The front features a large trapezoidal grille with a black honeycomb design inside, paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides, giving it a high recognition factor. The lower portion of the bumper has shapes resembling air ducts on both sides, along with a silver front lip decoration, making it sportier than the previous model. On the side, 17-inch dual-tone multi-spoke wheels are paired with 205/50 R17 tires, creating a harmonious proportion. The waistline runs from the front to the rear, and there is a recessed design on the lower part of the doors, adding a sense of dimension. At the rear, the LED tail lights adopt a through-type design, connected in the middle by a black trim strip that creates a striking effect when lit. The lower part of the rear bumper has a silver skid plate and hidden exhaust, giving an overall simple yet layered style. The lighting system features full LED configuration, with automatic headlights and front fog lights as standard, making daily use convenient.

Sitting inside, the interior design focuses on practicality, with a symmetrical layout for the center console. The upper part is wrapped with soft-touch materials, with silver trim in the middle, providing a good tactile and visual experience. The 9-inch capacitive touchscreen infotainment system is the centerpiece, angled slightly towards the driver for easier operation. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making phone connectivity very convenient. Below the screen, physical buttons are retained for controlling the air conditioning and volume, which allows for easy blind operation. The instrument panel is fully digital and can display information such as fuel consumption, navigation, and the status of safety systems, with clear interfaces. In terms of features, keyless entry, push-button start, and a multifunction steering wheel are all standard. The front row features single-zone automatic air conditioning, while the rear row is equipped with independent air conditioning vents, and there are USB ports available for the third row, ensuring that all passengers are taken care of. The seats are made of fabric material, with manually adjustable front seats that have storage pockets on the backrest. The second-row seats can slide forward and backward and have a 60:40 split-folding design with a center armrest. The third-row space is sufficient for short trips for passengers under 170 cm. When folded down, the trunk space can be expanded significantly, making it suitable for loading large items.

Space performance is one of the strengths of the Veloz. Its body dimensions of 4475mm in length, 1750mm in width, and 1700mm in height, along with a wheelbase of 2750mm, position it among the top levels in its class of compact MPVs. After adjusting the front row to a comfortable position, a 180cm passenger will have about one fist of headroom. The second row offers over two fists of legroom, with a wide sliding range. Even when adjusted to its forward-most position, there is still about one fist of legroom in the third row. Although not spacious, it is more practical than many compact MPVs. Regarding storage space, the door panel storage compartments can hold two bottles of water, and there is a wireless charging area below the center console (although not listed on the configuration sheet, the test drive model had it). The central armrest box in the front row has a decent capacity, the second-row seatbacks feature storage pockets, and the third row also has cup holders—ensuring there is space for small daily items. The trunk in the 7-seat configuration can fit two 20-inch suitcases, and with the third row folded flat, it can accommodate a stroller or a folding bicycle, making it highly practical.

Powertrain-wise, it is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, with a maximum horsepower of 106PS and a peak torque of 138N·m, paired with a CVT gearbox. During daily driving, it starts off relatively briskly, with linear throttle response, and it operates smoothly at low speeds in urban driving; after accelerating beyond 60km/h, the power output becomes more gradual, requiring a deeper throttle press for overtaking, during which the gearbox simulates gear shifting, increasing the RPM to over 4000 for the power to match. There are two driving modes: Eco and Normal. In Eco mode, the throttle response becomes slower, making it suitable for urban commuting; in Normal mode, power delivery is more direct, and the RPM stays around 2000 at highway cruising speeds with low noise. In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 5.2L/100km. During our test drive, it was approximately 6.5L in congested city traffic and about 5L on highways, which meets expectations.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is lightweight and precise, making city parking and U-turns very easy; the suspension uses a front MacPherson strut and a rear torsion beam, tuned for comfort. It can filter out most of the bumps when going over speed bumps or rough roads, ensuring rear passengers don't feel too jolted. When driving through bends, the body roll is not significant, and the chassis provides good stability, which is sufficient for everyday family use. Safety features are a highlight of the Veloz, as it comes standard with the TSS Intelligent Safety System, including ACC Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Active Braking, Front Collision Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, and more. The ACC is very practical for highway cruising as it allows for automatic following. The 360-degree panoramic camera offers high definition, enabling clear visibility of nearby obstacles when parking, making it easy for new drivers to handle.

For driving comfort, the sound insulation is well-executed, with tire and wind noise being barely noticeable during city driving. At highway speeds of 120km/h, wind noise increases slightly but doesn't impede conversation. The seat support is excellent, allowing long periods of travel without discomfort. The second-row seats are adjustable in angle, and although the third-row seats are somewhat thin, they are acceptable for short trips. The brake pedal offers a linear feel, with a moderate stopping distance, giving drivers confidence in daily use.

All in all, the core advantages of the 2023 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT are its practicality, rich features, comprehensive safety systems, and competitive price of RM95,000 within its class. Compared to the Honda BR-V, the Veloz offers more comprehensive safety features, a longer wheelbase, and more practical third-row space. Compared to the Perodua Alza, the Veloz provides a higher brand premium and better craftsmanship, making it well-suited for families seeking reliability and comfort. Its target demographic is quite clear: families of three or those with elderly members and children. It can meet needs for daily commutes and weekend outings. For budget-conscious consumers seeking a 7-seater with ample features, it’s also a good choice.

In conclusion, the 2023 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT is a well-rounded family MPV that offers space, features, and safety without significant shortcomings. Toyota's renowned reliability is an added bonus. If you're in need of a vehicle that can accommodate the whole family, comes with adequate features, and offers peace of mind while driving, it's definitely worth considering.

Owner of 2023 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT
As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT, after driving it in Malaysia for over half a year, what reassures me the most is its safety features! After all, there are many motorcycles on Malaysian roads, and sometimes they suddenly dart out, which can be quite frightening. But its automatic braking and forward collision warning are very responsive. Once on the LDP highway, the car in front braked suddenly, and before I could react, the system had already slowed me down—it literally saved my life! With six airbags, seatbelt reminders for all seats, and a 360-degree camera, I never worry about scraping the car when parking in those narrow alleys in KL city center. When it comes to safety, I give it a full score; it’s absolutely worth it. As for the exterior, I chose the silver color. The body lines are quite sleek, especially the large grille on the front. When I drive it to shopping malls in the Klang Valley, it gets decent attention. However, the rear design could be a bit more rounded—it feels a little too boxy right now. So I’ll deduct one point and give it a 4 out of 5. I’m also pretty satisfied with the interior. The 9-inch central control screen with CarPlay is very convenient. On long trips, using phone navigation and playing music is seamless. The rear row even has air-conditioning vents, so when taking family to Genting Highlands, the elderly and kids in the back won’t feel stuffy. However, the front seats are manually adjustable, which is a bit cumbersome, and the interior has a slightly excessive amount of plastic. If there were more soft-touch materials, it would be even more comfortable. Overall, I’d rate it 4 out of 5. In summary, as a family-friendly 7-seater car, the Veloz is really practical, especially for the road conditions in Malaysia!

As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT, driving it for over half a year in Malaysia has really proven how well it suits local needs! Performance gets a full 5-star rating, absolutely no complaints—handling Kuala Lumpur's stop-and-go traffic during the morning rush hour is incredibly smooth with the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine and CVT tuning. The throttle response is very responsive without any jerking. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the power delivery is super linear when climbing slopes, making overtaking and tailgating effortless. Fuel consumption is a pleasant surprise too, approximately 6.5L/100km in city traffic jams and 5.1L on highways—better than the official figures. With oil prices in Malaysia, this is incredibly cost-effective! The interior gets 4-stars because the overall quality is quite good. The 9-inch central console screen with CarPlay works smoothly, and the rear air conditioning is powerful (a godsend in Malaysia’s hot weather!). However, the seats are fabric, which easily collects dust. It would have been better if leather seats were an option. Safety must be rated 5-stars! Toyota Safety Sense is fully equipped. Just recently, I was on the LDP Highway and almost got too close to the car in front, but the automatic braking system kicked in immediately. It gave me a scare but kept us safe. The 360-degree camera system is invaluable when parking in Kuala Lumpur’s narrow alleys—it's even more accurate than using the side mirrors. Beginners will find it very easy to handle. The exterior gets 4-stars because the design is quite pleasing to the eye. The LED headlights are very bright both day and night, and the car's body lines look quite spacious. However, the paint is a bit thin; the last time a motorcycle brushed past it, the base coat was exposed, so this needs attention. All in all, as a 7-seat family car, the Veloz is very practical on Malaysia's roads, offering excellent value for money!

As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT, after driving it in Malaysia for more than half a year, I truly feel that I made the right choice with this car! Let me first talk about the safety features that give me the most peace of mind — after all, Malaysia has a lot of rainy days, and unexpected situations occasionally happen on the highway. Its TSS intelligent safety system really saved me once: that day on the North-South Expressway, the car in front suddenly braked hard, and my Veloz immediately activated the automatic braking system and stopped steadily without rear-ending! When driving in the city, the lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist are also very considerate. Plus, with 6 airbags, I feel completely at ease taking my family on trips. For performance, I would rate it 4 stars because the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine feels a bit underpowered when fully loaded with 7 people and climbing Genting Highlands. Even when pressing the accelerator hard, the CVT transmission is somewhat slow to respond. However, for daily commutes in Kuala Lumpur or driving on suburban highways, the power is more than enough, and the fuel consumption is very impressive. On average, it's just 5.5L/100km, which is even lower than the official claim. For car owners like us who frequently visit gas stations, this is very friendly. I must give full marks for the interior! The 9-inch infotainment screen with CarPlay is very smooth, and the air conditioning cools down super quickly (as Malaysia is hot year-round at over 30 degrees). The rear row also has independent air vents, so passengers in the back won't complain about being hot, even if the car is full. Although the seats are manually adjusted, they provide great support, and long drives won't make your back ache. The most surprising part is that after folding down the rear seats in a 6:4 split, I can fit my daughter's baby stroller and camping gear, maximizing practicality. Overall, the interior craftsmanship is very solid, and the plastic components don’t feel cheap. Having this level of configuration at this price is truly a great value!

As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Veloz 1.5 AT, after driving for more than half a year in Malaysia, the most surprising aspect is its interior! The 7-seat layout is very family-friendly for those like us who often drive family members to Genting or Johor Bahru to visit relatives. The second row can slide forward and backward, and when the third row is folded down, the trunk can fit 3 large suitcases plus a baby stroller. The 9-inch central screen with CarPlay is very smooth, the front row automatic air conditioning plus independent rear vents allow the whole family to cool down quickly even in the 35°C heat in Kuala Lumpur. The materials are also solid, with soft-touch plastics where you can reach, making it completely unlike a car of this price range. A full 5 stars, no complaints! In terms of performance, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT is very smooth for city driving. Especially during rush hour traffic jams, the throttle response is immediate, and the start is not sluggish. However, on the North-South Expressway during overtaking, you need to step on the gas pedal ahead of time, bringing the revs up above 4000 rpm to feel noticeable power. Accelerating further after 120km/h on the highway gets a bit laborious. But considering its 1.1-ton weight and family-use positioning, this performance is sufficient, and a 4-star rating seems reasonable. As for the exterior, I find it quite appealing. The LED headlights plus daytime running lights have good visibility during rainy days in Penang, and the car's lines are angular, not making it look bloated like some MPVs. The 17-inch wheels with 205-wide tires make it visually stable when going over speed bumps, but the car paint is a bit thin. Last time, it got scratched by a motorcycle when parked by the roadside, and the base paint was exposed. This minor regret deducts 1 point, so it gets 4 stars~
