Volkswagen Passat 2022 Review

Nowadays, the competition in Malaysia's D-segment sedan market is becoming increasingly refined. Consumers not only seek family comfort but also desire an elevated experience in terms of features and performance. This demand provides an opportunity for the 2022 Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TSI R-Line to shine. As the high-end model of the series, it not only upholds the steady nature that the Passat is known for, but also raises the upper limit of its product power with the R-Line sports kit and its 220PS turbocharged engine. In this test drive, we focus on verifying two points: is its sporty aspect more than just "surface-level appeal"? And can its configuration advantages translate into real-world competitive strength against rivals like the Camry and Teana?
Starting with the exterior, the 2022 Passat R-Line adopts a "low-key sporty" overall style. The front face features Volkswagen's family-style design, but the R-Line exclusive honeycomb lower grille and blackened trims lend it a more aggressive appearance; the two contour lines on the hood stretch from the A-pillars to the front grille, enhancing its muscular feel. The side profile showcases smooth lines, with its 4775mm length paired with 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, offering a balanced yet dynamic proportion. The chrome trim running along the lower edge of the windows from the A-pillar to the rear enhances its precision. The rear design is relatively simple, with smoked LED taillights that are highly recognizable when lit; the single-sided dual exhaust layout is understated but aligns with the R-Line identity. The lighting system is fully LED-configured, and the inclusion of automatic headlights and daytime running lights adds to its daily convenience.
Stepping inside, the interior texture matches the positioning of a D-segment vehicle. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, complemented by silver trim accents, creating a calm yet luxurious atmosphere. The dual-screen system, consisting of a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument panel and a 9.2-inch touchscreen central control screen, is smooth to operate and offers clear display. The central screen supports both CarPlay and Android Auto, providing strong practicality. The leather-wrapped steering wheel is equipped with paddle shifters and multifunction buttons, offering a comfortable grip. The 14-way electrically adjustable front seats stand out as a highlight, with the driver’s seat further featuring memory and massage functions, which effectively ease fatigue during long drives. In terms of space, the 2786mm wheelbase ensures ample legroom in the rear; a 175cm-tall passenger sitting in the back has about two fists' worth of knee room. The rear is equipped with independent air conditioning vents and a 220V power outlet, and storage space is sufficient—the door panel storage can fit two bottles of water, and the central armrest box is of moderate capacity. The trunk volume is 586L and supports 60:40 split folding, making it suitable for carrying strollers or suitcases.
In the power department, the 2.0T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum output of 220PS and a peak torque of 350N·m, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Power response is enthusiastic during starts, and a gentle press on the accelerator provides a decent pushback feeling; mid-to-late acceleration is strong, and when overtaking, a deep press of the accelerator results in swift downshifts and direct power output. There are three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. In Sport mode, throttle response becomes more sensitive, and the shifting logic is more aggressive, suitable for scenarios where driving pleasure is prioritized. The suspension system features front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent setups, tuned for comfort without sacrificing support. While navigating over speed bumps, the suspension filters out most road shocks, keeping cabin vibrations to a minimum. While taking high-speed corners, body roll is well-controlled, and stability is excellent. The steering is precise with minimal slack, feeling light at low speeds and stable at high speeds, aligning with the tuning logic of a family car.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 6.9L/100km. During our test drive, with 60% city driving and 40% highway driving, the actual fuel consumption was approximately 7.8L/100km, which is fairly average. Noise control is done well. At a speed of 100km/h, wind and tire noise are within an acceptable range; engine noise becomes noticeable inside the cabin only at high rpm. The braking system is responsive, the brake pedal travel is moderate, and it gives enough confidence.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2022 Passat 2.0 TSI R-Line are very obvious: rich features (massage seats, fully digital instrument panel, Harman Kardon audio system), strong power, and practicality in space. Compared to the same-class Toyota Camry 2.5V, its power parameters are higher and it also features massage seats and a fully digital instrument panel. Compared to the Honda Accord 2.0T, the Passat's chassis tuning is more comfortable, and its interior feels more premium. However, its dual-clutch transmission occasionally has slight jerks during low-speed creeping, which is something to be aware of.
This car is suitable for two types of people: firstly, families focusing on home comfort, as its spacious interior and rich features can meet daily needs; secondly, middle-aged individuals who occasionally seek driving excitement, as the 2.0T power and sports mode offer a good driving experience. If you're looking for a well-rounded and quality mid-size sedan, the 2022 Passat 2.0 TSI R-Line is worth considering — it has no obvious shortcomings and is a "well-rounded" family car.
