Volkswagen Touareg R-Line 2024 Review

The competition in the E-class luxury SUV market has become increasingly fierce in recent years. Consumers not only look for the quality of a flagship model but also hope for uncompromised configuration and cost-effectiveness — the Volkswagen Touareg R-Line is the 2024 model updated to meet these demands. As the flagship SUV of the brand, it retains the core advantage of the 3.0T V6 engine this time, while optimizing configurations and details. The main purpose of this test drive is to see if this German SUV can strike a balance between luxury, practicality, and driving pleasure in the same price range.
Starting with the exterior, the overall size of the Touareg R-Line is not small. With a length of 4878mm and a wheelbase of 2899mm, it has the obvious presence of a flagship SUV in traffic. The front features a large honeycomb grille, with both the outer frame and inner trims finished in glossy black. Combined with the sharp LED headlamp units on both sides, the recognition level is very high. The side profile of the body is sleek, with a powerful waistline extending from the fender to the rear. The 20-inch multi-spoke wheels and 285/45 R20 wide tires further enhance the sporty look. The rear design is relatively simple, with LED taillights adopting a through-line design connected by a chrome trim in the center. The dual-sided dual-exit exhaust layout below also corresponds to the sporty positioning of the R-Line.
Entering the cabin, the first thing noticeable is the material usage in the interior — most areas of the center console and inner door panels are wrapped in soft leather, paired with silver trims and piano black panels, creating a good sense of luxury. The center screen measures 15 inches, features a simple interface design, and offers smooth operation, supporting CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The instrument cluster is fully digital, providing rich information and allowing different theme modes to be switched. In terms of configuration, the Touareg R-Line is generously equipped: front-row 12-way power-adjustable seats with memory function, rear-row independent air-conditioning vents and USB ports, 360° panoramic imaging, ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and active braking are all standard features. The space performance is aligned with the positioning of an E-class SUV. The headroom and legroom at the front are very generous, and even a passenger who is 180 cm tall will have over a fist’s worth of headspace; in the second row, legroom can reach two fists, ensuring that three adults can sit comfortably without feeling crowded. The trunk has a volume of 810L, and the rear seats support a 40:20:40 split-folding design, expanding the capacity to about 1800L when folded. This easily accommodates large items like strollers and suitcases.
As for power, the 2024 Touareg R-Line is equipped with a 3.0T V6 turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 250kW (340PS) and a peak torque of 450N·m. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a full-time all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6 seconds. During actual driving, the power response at start-up is swift, and pressing the accelerator gives a noticeable push-back feeling. Mid-to-late-stage acceleration is also robust, allowing for overtaking without needing to press hard on the accelerator. The transmission quickly downshifts, providing smooth power delivery. There are several driving modes such as Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Off-road to choose from. When switched to Sport mode, the throttle response becomes more sensitive, and the steering wheel feels heavier, making it suitable for users who enjoy spirited driving.
In terms of handling, the steering of the Touareg R-Line is precise with minimal free play. The body roll is well-controlled during cornering, instilling great confidence in the driver. The chassis features front and rear multi-link independent suspension with a setup leaning towards comfort, which effectively filters out most road bumps. Even on rough roads, passengers inside the car won't feel too jolted. However, the suspension is not lacking in support either, as the vehicle does not experience excessive bouncing when going over speed bumps quickly. The braking performance is stable with a short stopping distance and a linear pedal feel, making it easy to control during daily driving. In terms of fuel consumption, during our test drive, which was mainly urban roads with occasional highway driving, the real-world fuel consumption was around 11L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 9.5L/100km. However, considering the 3.0T engine displacement and car weight, this fuel consumption is still acceptable.
In terms of ride comfort, the Touareg R-Line performs commendably. The cabin's sound insulation is well executed, and at high speeds, wind and tire noise are well-controlled, not affecting the conversation among passengers. The seats provide good cushioning and support, making long drives less tiring. The rear seats are adjustable as well, allowing passengers to find a comfortable seating position.
Overall, the 2024 Volkswagen Touareg R-Line has clear core advantages: a powerful 3.0T V6 engine, rich features, spacious interior, and competitive pricing within its class among E-segment SUVs. Compared to the BBA models in the same segment, it offers better value for money and more comprehensive features. This vehicle is suitable for families that value power and luxury, need ample space, or for mid-to-high-end consumers looking for value. If you're seeking a flagship SUV that can meet daily family needs while providing occasional driving fun, the Touareg R-Line is an excellent choice.
