Today, the selection in Malaysia's D-segment luxury sedan market is not lacking, but there are not many models that strike the right balance between performance, eco-friendliness, and luxury. As a plug-in hybrid version under the brand, the 2019 Volvo S60 T8 R-Design not only claims a "4-second acceleration" performance but also offers the advantage of low fuel consumption. For consumers who pursue driving pleasure and care about daily costs, this is undoubtedly quite tempting. This time, we got our hands on the actual vehicle to see whether its static performance aligns with its luxury positioning, whether its dynamic performance truly balances performance and comfort, and how the plug-in hybrid system actually performs.

First, let’s look at the exterior. The overall design style of the 2019 S60 T8 R-Design leans towards sporty but not ostentatious. The front features Volvo's signature "Thor's Hammer" LED daytime running lights, paired with a blackened vertical waterfall grille, resulting in high recognition. The side profile of the car is sleek, with a waistline running from the front to the rear enhancing the muscular feel. The 19-inch dual five-spoke alloy wheels and 235/40 R19 tire specifications further highlight the sporty vibe. At the rear, the "Viking Axe" LED taillights look very distinctive when lit, while the dual exhaust layout hints at its performance identity. Compared to the regular S60, the R-Design kit, with its blackened trims and sporty body kit, makes the whole vehicle look younger and more energetic.

Stepping inside, the interior exudes a sense of luxury and technology. The dashboard adopts a Nordic minimalist design, complemented with large areas of soft materials and metallic trim, providing a pleasant tactile experience. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and 9-inch central touchscreen are the key features, and the central screen comes with Volvo's Sensus smart system, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The operation logic is clear, and it responds quite swiftly. The seats feature R-Design exclusive sports seat designs, offering excellent support. They are electrically adjustable with lumbar support, ensuring comfort even during long journeys. Additionally, the cabin comes equipped with practical features like four-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, and more, guaranteeing convenience and comfort in daily use.

In terms of space performance, although the official dimensions for the T8 version haven't been provided, based on the 2776mm wheelbase of the T6 version in the same class, both the front and rear seating spaces are quite roomy. After adjusting the front seats to a comfortable position, there is still about two fists-width of legroom remaining in the rear. Headroom is also adequate, ensuring even passengers as tall as 180cm won't feel cramped. As for storage space, the door pockets, central armrest, and cup holders all provide ample capacity. The trunk’s regular volume can meet daily needs, but due to the presence of the battery pack, it is slightly reduced compared to the fuel version of the S60.

The dynamic performance is the highlight of this car. The 2019 S60 T8 R-Design is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine and an electric motor in a plug-in hybrid system, with a combined maximum output of 413PS. The official 0-100km/h acceleration takes only 4.4 seconds. In actual driving, the torque output of the motor is very direct during the initial start, and the power response is quick. Even with a light press on the accelerator, you can feel a noticeable push-back effect. When switched to Sport mode, the engine and motor work together to deliver even stronger acceleration performance, making overtaking very reassuring. The gearbox is an 8-speed automatic, with smooth gear changes and hardly any noticeable jerks.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers precise direction control with minimal play, and the steering is clear. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension, calibrated for sporty performance without being overly stiff. During cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, offering good stability. When dealing with bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters out most minor vibrations, maintaining body stability and ensuring comfort.

As a plug-in hybrid model, fuel consumption performance is worth noting. The official combined fuel consumption is 3.18L/100km. In our actual test, the pure electric mode can travel about 50km in urban conditions, fully meeting daily commuting needs. During long-distance drives, the engine and motor work in tandem, with fuel consumption being approximately 6L/100km, showing a significant advantage compared to fuel-only vehicles in the same class. Moreover, the vehicle supports both fast and slow charging options. In fast charging mode, it takes about 2.5 hours to fully charge, while slow charging requires about 6 hours.

In terms of ride comfort, the in-car noise control is quite effective. Whether driving at low speeds or cruising at high speeds, wind and tire noise are not prominent. The energy recovery system offers adjustable levels, and even at the highest setting, the drag sensation is not abrupt, ensuring a comfortable everyday driving experience. The comfort of the seats is also commendable; the balance between support and cushioning in the sporty seats is well-executed, ensuring comfort even during long drives.

Overall, the core strengths of the 2019 Volvo S60 T8 R-Design lie in its powerful performance, low operating costs, and impressive luxury features. Compared to plug-in hybrid models from its BBA competitors in the same class, its price is more affordable, and it offers richer features, giving it a higher cost-performance ratio. This car is suitable for consumers who value both driving pleasure and sustainability, as well as daily usage costs, especially young families or professionals. It ensures comfortable and economical daily commutes while also delivering robust performance when needed.

In conclusion, the 2019 Volvo S60 T8 R-Design is a D-segment luxury sedan that balances performance, environmental considerations, and premium features. Its performance is well-rounded without obvious drawbacks. If you are looking for a luxury sedan that meets daily usage demands and occasionally allows you to unleash some driving passion, this car is worth considering.

Owner of 2019 Volvo S60 T8 R-Design
As the owner of a 2019 Volvo S60 T8 R-Design, after driving in Malaysia for nearly two years, I genuinely feel that I made the right choice with this car! First, let’s praise the exterior. The R-Design package is exactly my style — the Thor's Hammer headlights have an incredibly high recognition factor in Kuala Lumpur's rainy evenings, and the sleek coupe-like silhouette paired with 19-inch wheels always turns heads when parked at KLCC. It has that added touch of Nordic finesse that stands out compared to similar BBA models. Absolutely perfect, no complaints! The interior is even more to my liking. The Nappa leather seats feel exquisitely smooth and stay comfortable even during long periods (especially important since Malaysia is constantly 30°C+). The wooden trim and metal buttons on the center console exude quality, and that crystal gear shifter— I can’t resist touching it every time I start the car. The luxury vibes are spot on, 5 stars for sure! On the safety front, I’m deducting 1 point. Not that it’s bad— Volvo’s City Safety system has saved me twice in Penang’s narrow alleys from sudden motorcycles darting out, with the automatic braking responding very swiftly. However, on highways, the Level 2 driver assistance occasionally struggles to accurately detect some of the older lane markings on the Malay Peninsula, requiring manual corrections. Overall though, it’s still very reliable, so 4 stars seem fair. In conclusion, this car hits all the right notes for me in terms of looks and interior design, with safety features that are dependable. Driving it in Malaysia is both stylish and practical!

As an owner of the 2019 Volvo S60 T6 who has been driving in Malaysia for almost two years, I genuinely feel that I made the right choice with this car! I have to give the exterior full marks—the Nordic design really hits the spot for me. The Thor's Hammer headlights are highly recognizable in the evening traffic of Kuala Lumpur. The streamlined body paired with 18-inch rims gets plenty of attention in the KLCC parking lot and matches the presence of BBA (BMW, Benz, Audi). My friends keep saying, "How come Volvo looks so good now?" For safety, I’d give it 4 stars—after all, this is Volvo's forte. Last time I encountered a sudden traffic jam on the North-South Expressway, the City Safety system automatically braked for me, avoiding a rear-end collision. When I normally drive on the LDP highway, the Pilot Assist helps maintain a steady following distance, relieving a lot of strain on my right foot. However, the rear side airbags need to be added as an option, which is a minor downside. If they were standard, it would be perfect. I’d also rate performance as 4 stars. The 253 horsepower is more than enough for local road conditions. When rushing to work in Petaling Jaya in the morning, overtaking on the expressway only requires a light press of the accelerator. The AT gearbox shifts smoothly and doesn’t have the jerky feel that some German cars do. The only minor regret is that the power reserve feels a bit weak when speeding past 180 km/h on the highway, but since Malaysia’s highway speed limit is 110 km/h, it’s totally sufficient for everyday use. Fuel consumption is about 10L/100km in the city and drops to 7L on the highway, which is fairly reasonable. Overall, it’s very comfortable to drive this car in Malaysia. The looks, safety features, and performance are all up to par—definitely worth the price!

Owner of 2019 Volvo S60 T8 R-Design
As the owner of a 2019 Volvo S60 T8 R-Design, driving it in Malaysia for almost two years now, let’s talk about the exterior first — giving it 4 stars is really fair. The sporty feel of the R-Design kit is exactly to my taste, especially the blacked-out front grille and the 19-inch large wheels. Every time I park at the Pavilion in Kuala Lumpur, I can feel the gaze of passersby. It feels much more spirited compared to the standard S60. However, the only small regret is that the paint feels a bit thin. Last time on Jalan Bukit Bintang, the door of a car next to mine bumped into my car, exposing a bit of the primer. If the paint were thicker, it would be perfect. Now let's talk about performance, also 4 stars. The power of this T8 plug-in hybrid is truly strong — 413 horsepower is no joke! Last time on the North-South Expressway, overtaking those slow-moving trucks, a deep press on the accelerator made it shoot forward instantly, and the 4.4-second 0-100 km/h acceleration provides a lot of confidence when overtaking on the highway. But since the car weighs over 2 tons, on hilly roads in Penang, there’s occasional slight jerkiness with the gearbox during low-speed following, especially when the battery runs out and it switches to pure petrol mode. This point is indeed not as smooth as pure electric cars. But overall, under Malaysian road conditions, the power and handling are still quite impressive.

As the owner of a 2019 Volvo S60 T6, having driven it in Malaysia for almost three years, the two things I want to praise the most are safety and interior! The safety deserves more than a perfect 5—on Malaysian highways, it's common to encounter cars suddenly changing lanes. There was one time on the North-South Expressway when the car in front braked suddenly, and before I could react, the City Safety system stopped my car automatically, leaving just about half a meter to spare! When driving on small roads in Kuala Lumpur, the system also alerts me with beeping sounds if pedestrians suddenly cross the road, providing a full sense of security. The interior deserves a 4 because the overall quality is great, but there are still some small regrets in the details. The minimalist Nordic design matches my aesthetic, and the Nappa leather seats feel soft and comfortable. Even during traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, sitting on them doesn't feel stuffy. However, the center control screen sometimes responds a bit slowly, especially after being exposed to the sun for a while. For instance, when tapping “air conditioning,” it takes about a second to respond. If this could be optimized, it would be perfect~ All in all, these two aspects align well with my expectations for Volvo. In Malaysia, driving safely and comfortably is truly indispensable!

Owner of 2019 Volvo S60 T6
As the owner of a 2019 Volvo S60 T6, I've been driving it in Malaysia for almost three years. When it comes to the interior and performance, I think a 4-star rating is very reasonable—not perfect, but definitely comfortable for daily use. First, let's talk about the interior. I've always liked Volvo's Nordic design. Sitting inside doesn't feel as flashy as some other cars. The portrait-oriented center console screen is easy to use. Considering the hot weather in Malaysia, the ventilated seats and automatic air conditioning are particularly practical. When stuck in traffic in Kuala Lumpur, with the cool air blowing and holding the cool leather steering wheel, it really helps ease some of the frustration. However, there's a slight drawback: the glove compartment and the storage slots in the door panels are a bit small. While they can fit bottled water, trying to fit a large umbrella or a child's small backpack can be a bit tight. If these compartments were designed to be a bit wider, it would have been even better. As for performance, the 253 horsepower is more than sufficient for Malaysia's road conditions. When driving on highways in Selangor, stepping on the accelerator deeply brings a noticeable surge in power. The gear shifts are smooth with no jerky feeling. In Kuala Lumpur's city traffic, it also feels stable when tailing at low speeds. The steering wheel is light, making turning and U-turns a breeze. However, being a D-segment car, the weight is definitely there. If I encounter particularly steep mountain roads (like the section going to Genting Highlands), I can feel that I need to press the accelerator a bit harder. The power response isn't as swift as on flat roads, but it's absolutely sufficient—not to the point where it can't handle it, just lacking a bit of that "punch." Overall, these two aspects fall under the "worry-free to use, with some minor shortcomings that don't affect the big picture" category, so I think 4 stars are perfectly fitting.
