Overall, the design meets mainstream aesthetics while making the car easily stand out in traffic.
Inside, the XC40 T5 R-Design's interior style is simple and practical without excessive decorative elements. The center console revolves around a 9-inch touchscreen with a clear interface and smooth operation. Regarding materials, the seats use a combination of leather and fabric, with the front seats offering electric adjustment, adequate support, and comfortable wrapping for daily use. For features, a full LCD instrument panel, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear air vents, and a 220V power outlet are all standard, providing excellent utility. In terms of space, the 2702mm wheelbase offers ample legroom in the rear, leaving about two fists worth of space between a 175cm tall passenger's knees and the front seat. The rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split, significantly expanding the trunk space, which can easily accommodate a stroller or camping gear.
As for performance, the XC40 T5 R-Design is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine delivering a maximum output of 255 PS and peak torque from 1800-4800 rpm. For daily driving, the comfort mode is preferred, where gear shifts are smooth and barely perceptible, making it ideal for city commutes.
The handling and chassis performance are consistent with Volvo's tuning style, featuring a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup that effectively absorbs road bumps. When driving over speed bumps, the suspension quickly absorbs vibrations without unnecessary bouncing, ensuring comfort for rear-seat passengers. The fuel consumption performance is mediocre. We drove 50km each in urban congested roads and highways, with a combined fuel consumption of about 8.5L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 7.7L/100km. However, considering the four-wheel-drive system and 2.0T power, this result is within an acceptable range. Noise control is relatively good, with wind and tire noise not being noticeable during high-speed driving, making conversations inside the car easy without raising volume intentionally. The seat comfort is also commendable, with no significant lower back discomfort during long drives.
Safety features are a major highlight of the XC40 T5 R-Design. Seven safety airbags, lane change assist, lane departure warning, and active braking are all standard equipment, fully showcasing Volvo's safety genes. Compared to competitors in the same class, its safety configurations are more comprehensive, which is an important advantage for families with children. Price-wise, the official price of RM 231,651 positions it in the mid-to-high range of C-Segment SUVs. However, considering its power, features, and brand value, it still stands out in terms of cost performance.
