Nowadays, the competition in the compact luxury SUV market is becoming increasingly fierce. Consumers demand not only brand appeal but also value safety features and everyday practicality. As a seasoned contender in this segment, the 2024 Volvo XC40 returns with minor upgrades, focusing on enhanced safety assistance systems, more stable fuel efficiency, and the continuation of the brand's signature Nordic aesthetics. The main goal of this test drive is to verify whether the new XC40 can maintain its safety DNA while meeting local users' needs for comfort and cost-effectiveness.

The exterior of the 2024 XC40 continues the family-style design with a robust yet refined overall style. The vertical waterfall grille paired with the Volvo badge is highly recognizable; the "Thor's Hammer" LED daytime running lights on either side remain a visual focal point, looking striking once illuminated. The side profile features smooth lines, while the 4425mm length and 2702mm wheelbase make it a standard size for a compact SUV. The 19-inch wheels paired with 235/50 R19 tires ensure good drivability and create a harmonious side proportion. The rear "Viking Axe" LED tail lights are a classic design, and the vertical light strips are easily identifiable at night. The silver skid plate on the lower rear bumper adds a hint of off-road styling.

Sitting inside, the Nordic minimalist style immediately stands out. The center console layout is clear, with most physical buttons integrated into the 9-inch touchscreen display, which has an intuitive operational logic. The interior materials are solid, with the inner door panels and the top of the dashboard wrapped in soft-touch materials, offering a delicate feel. The multifunction steering wheel supports paddle shifters and provides a comfortable grip. In terms of features, the fully digital instrument panel has a clear display and supports multiple information interfaces. The front seats offer electric adjustment and good support, making long driving sessions less tiring. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split to expand the storage space flexibly. The dual-zone automatic climate control system with rear air vents takes care of rear-seat passenger comfort, while standard features such as keyless entry, 360-degree panoramic imaging, and automatic parking significantly enhance daily usability.

The space performance aligns with the positioning of a compact SUV. The front row offers ample headroom, leaving over a fist of space for passengers around 180cm tall; the legroom is sufficient as well, with about two fists of space between the knees and the dashboard once the seat is adjusted. Rear seat space is average. An 180cm tall passenger sitting in the back row will find about one and a half fists of legroom between the knees and the front seatback, while headroom offers approximately one fist of clearance, which is adequate for everyday family use. In terms of storage capacity, the trunk's standard volume is sufficient, and folding the rear seats down allows for storing larger items. The front central armrest box and door panel storage compartments are also practical for keeping personal belongings.

For performance, the 2024 XC40 is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine delivering a maximum horsepower of 252.5PS and a peak torque of 350N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.4 seconds. During actual driving, the power response in the initial acceleration phase is swift, with noticeable thrust upon light throttle. Mid-to-late-stage acceleration is also strong; during overtaking, stepping deeper on the gas pedal results in quick gear shifts and smooth power output. The car offers multiple driving modes, and switching to Sport mode enhances throttle sensitivity and delays gear shifts, delivering a more dynamic driving experience.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise, with minimal play and clear directional control. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension setup, tuned for comfort while retaining a certain level of support. When driving on bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters out most vibrations, so passengers in the car won't feel significant jolts. When cornering, body roll is well controlled, and the all-wheel-drive system provides stable traction, giving the vehicle a solid driving feel. As for fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.3L/100km. During the actual test drive, fuel consumption was approximately 8.5L/100km in urban conditions and about 6.8L/100km on highways, showing a slight improvement compared to the previous model.

In terms of driving comfort, cabin noise is well-controlled, with wind and tire noise being minimal during high-speed driving. Engine noise is barely noticeable at idle and isn’t too loud during acceleration. The seat padding is soft and moderately firm with good support, making long drives less fatiguing. While the energy recovery system (not present in this fuel version tested) may be available in the hybrid or electric versions, the fuel version's smoothness is already sufficient.

Safety features remain a strong suit of the XC40, with 7 airbags, lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, forward collision warning, and other functionalities all coming as standard. The ACC adaptive cruise control system is very convenient for highway use, reducing the driving burden. Compared with the previous model, the safety assistance system of the 2024 XC40 responds faster and provides higher detection accuracy, better avoiding potential dangers.

In conclusion, the standout features of the 2024 Volvo XC40 include comprehensive safety configurations, solid driving quality, comfortable interior space, and stable power performance. Compared to competitors like the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA in the same segment, the XC40 holds an advantage in safety features, with a relatively more affordable price, offering good value for money. This car is suitable for families that prioritize safety and comfort as well as young buyers who appreciate Scandinavian design. If your car-buying needs include balancing daily family use with safety performance, the 2024 Volvo XC40 would be a great choice.

Pros
Comprehensive and reliable safety configuration, functions such as active braking and lane keeping have repeatedly prevented accidents in complex road conditions
Good performance, 2.0T provides ample power, and full-time four-wheel drive offers strong stability on slippery roads and slopes
Eye-catching exterior design, R-Design sports kit and Thor's hammer headlights enhance recognition and appeal
Cons
The selection of car body colors is limited, and some colors may turn yellow under strong ultraviolet light.
Some models lack imaging configurations, with only rear cameras and no panoramic imaging, making parking in old neighborhoods inconvenient.
The power reserve weakens after 120km/h on the highway, and some models exhibit noticeable body roll when cornering.

Owner of 2021 Volvo XC40 T5 R-Design
As the owner of a 2021 Volvo XC40 T5 R-Design, after driving it in Malaysia for almost two years, I truly feel this car was the right choice! Let’s talk about performance first — Malaysia often encounters sudden heavy rains, and there are many waterlogged sections on highways, but its all-wheel drive is incredibly stable. The 6.4-second acceleration makes overtaking on the North-South Expressway especially satisfying. With just a step on the gas pedal, the power responds immediately, without any delay. During traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur city, the start-stop system is also very smooth, with no abrupt shakes. The average fuel consumption of 7.7L is quite friendly for a 2.0T engine, even better than my previous Japanese SUV. As for the exterior, the R-Design sports package really hits the spot! The black wheels paired with the two-tone body create a super high head-turning rate on the road, especially at night when the LED headlights light up, maximizing its recognition. It’s always easy to spot it in the mall parking lot. What reassures me the most is the safety — last time on the mountain roads in Penang, the car in front suddenly braked, and the autonomous emergency braking system stopped me in time, giving me quite a scare! On the highway, lane-keeping assistance and blind-spot monitoring are also very practical. With the heavy traffic in Kuala Lumpur, these features help me avoid many risks. With seven airbags and Volvo's body rigidity, I feel particularly safe taking my family on trips. In short, this car performs perfectly under Malaysian road conditions and is highly recommended for friends who value safety and driving experience!

Owner of 2024 Volvo XC40
As the owner of a 2024 Volvo XC40, after driving it in Malaysia for three months, I sincerely feel that I made the right choice with this car! The exterior gets a score of 4. Although it’s not the type that leaves a stunning first impression, Volvo’s classic Thor's Hammer headlights and clean lines make it highly recognizable in Kuala Lumpur's traffic. However, the selection of body colors is somewhat limited. If there were more vibrant tropical-style colors to match Malaysia, it would be perfect. In terms of performance, I would also give it a 4. The 2.0T engine performs excellently, especially when overtaking on Penang’s mountain roads with great ease. The 6.4-second acceleration gives a powerful push-back feeling. However, the fuel consumption is slightly higher at around 8.5L in city traffic compared to the official figure of 7.3L. Considering Malaysia's road conditions, I am still very satisfied with this performance. The most surprising aspect is the interior, which deserves a 5! The Scandinavian design is extremely comfortable, especially the Orrefors crystal gear knob, which feels exceptionally premium to the touch. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning is incredibly practical in Malaysia’s hot weather, and the rear air vents work efficiently to keep my family cool in the back seats. Also, the 9-inch central touchscreen operates smoothly, and the CarPlay connection is very stable, making it convenient to use while driving. Overall, the XC40's performance in Malaysia has been excellent, especially in terms of interior comfort and performance. It completely meets my expectations!

Owner of 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge T5 R-Design
As a car owner in Kuala Lumpur for almost two years, I truly feel that I made the right choice with this XC40 Recharge T5 R-Design! First of all, safety has to get full marks — you all know how the traffic in Kuala Lumpur is, with motorcycles suddenly darting out or abrupt braking. Its automatic braking and lane departure warning have saved me several times! Last time when I was following the car in front along Jalan Ampang, a motorcycle suddenly cut in from the adjacent lane, and the system automatically applied the brakes for me. It scared me a lot, but I was really thankful. With 7 airbags and Volvo's consistent reputation for safety, taking the family out brings a lot of peace of mind. The exterior has no flaws either. The sporty R-Design kit is just my style! The 19-inch wheels paired with the dark body paint often attract questions from passersby when I park at Suria KLCC. The LED headlights are highly recognizable during the day and provide enough brightness for nighttime driving. In a country like Malaysia, where it often rains suddenly, the automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers are particularly practical. As for performance, I’d give it a score of 4. The 1.5T hybrid is quite zippy in the city, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 7.3 seconds, making overtaking an occasional breeze. However, after hitting 120 km/h on the highway, the power reserve isn’t as strong. After all, it's a front-wheel-drive car, so there’s more body roll than I expected when cornering. That said, it’s perfectly adequate for daily commuting and weekend trips to the winding roads of Genting. The fuel consumption of 5.9L/100km is pretty economical, especially with Malaysia's gas prices. All in all, as a family car, it gets full marks for safety and appearance. The performance is slightly lacking but still very acceptable. I’d recommend it to friends who prioritize safety and aesthetics!

Owner of 2021 Volvo XC40 T5 R-Design
As the owner of the 2021 XC40 T5 R-Design, after driving it in Malaysia for nearly two years, I genuinely feel this car was the right choice! First, let me praise the performance—absolutely full marks without hesitation! During Kuala Lumpur's rush hours, the car is especially smooth at low speeds when following traffic; the turbo engagement is not abrupt at all. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the 2.0T power is readily available when climbing hills—even with the air conditioning on and five people onboard, it handles effortlessly. The AWD performs impressively on wet and slippery mountain roads on rainy days, with zero skidding. For safety, I’ll give 4 out of 5. Volvo’s safety features are indeed top-notch—the automatic braking once helped me avoid a collision with a car cutting in on the LDP highway, and the lane-keeping system works great on the straight roads near Sepang. However, I’m deducting one point because the reversing camera is a bit dark. At night, in places like the dark alleys of Klang Valley without streetlights, I have to lean out and take a closer look to feel assured. If the image clarity could be improved, it would be perfect. For the exterior, 4 out of 5. The R-Design sports kit stands out among the streets filled with Japanese cars in Malaysia, and the LED headlights are super recognizable even in the daytime. Whenever I park near the Twin Towers, people always turn their heads for a glance. My only small regret is the limited choice of body colors. I chose Crystal White, which is resistant to dirt, but it would’ve been nice to have some more unique metallic color options. Overall, this car is both reliable and convenient to drive under Malaysian road conditions. Highly recommended for friends who prioritize safety and performance!

Owner of 2020 Volvo XC40 T5 AWD R-Design
As a 2020 Volvo XC40 T5 AWD R-Design owner, having driven it in Malaysia for nearly two years, what gives me the most peace of mind is its safety features! Previously, when I was maneuvering through the narrow streets of George Town in Penang, the forward collision warning suddenly beeped—turns out a motorcycle in front suddenly braked hard. Before I could react, the automatic braking intervened, giving me a scare but really saving the day. Then last month, when I took my wife and kids to Genting, the winding and steep uphill roads triggered the lane departure warning system, which kept helping me correct my direction. Combined with the 7 airbags and lane change assist, I felt completely at ease with my whole family in the car. For safety, I'd give it a full score of 5 out of 5—no complaints here! As for the appearance, the R-Design's sporty kit does look sharper compared to the standard version. The LED headlights are particularly bright during the heavy rains at night in Kuala Lumpur, and the Thor's Hammer design is highly recognizable during the day. However, the rear design feels a bit too "rounded," which doesn't quite match the sharpness of the front. When parked next to other SUVs at a parking lot by the beach in Sabah, it lacks that "stunning at first glance" vibe. I'd say a score of 4 would be relatively fair.
