The C-segment SUV market has become increasingly competitive in recent years. Many family users value both spatial practicality and clear requirements for safety features and driving quality when choosing a car. As a frequent contender in this market segment, the 2024 Volvo XC40 returns this time with more comprehensive safety features and well-balanced power performance. Our main goal for this test drive was to determine whether it can still retain its advantage in its price range by relying on Volvo's iconic safety DNA and practical design.

In terms of appearance, the 2024 XC40 continues its family-style minimalist design. The front face features a waterfall-style grille paired with Volvo's iconic "Thor's Hammer" LED daytime running lights, giving it high recognizability. The car body lines are compact and smooth. With a length of 4425mm and a width of 1873mm, it falls into the conventional range for the C-segment, but the height of 1658mm provides decent headroom. At the rear, the "Viking Axe" LED taillights are striking when lit, echoing the front design. The 19-inch 235/50 R19 tires paired with multi-spoke wheels retain the stability of an SUV without appearing overly bulky.

Inside, the overall interior adopts a minimalist and practical style. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials and adorned with silver trim, giving a quality feel that matches its positioning. The 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display offers smooth operation and clear interface navigation, though some functions require accessing submenus, which may take some time to get used to in everyday use. The fully digital instrument cluster provides rich information, allowing switching between different themes for easy access to core data such as speed and fuel consumption. The front seats feature electric adjustments, with excellent support and cushioning, ensuring comfort even during long drives. The rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split, and when folded down, the trunk capacity can be expanded to meet the storage needs of family trips. The combination of dual-zone automatic climate control for the front and independent air conditioning for the rear is considerate, catering to the needs of various passengers.

In terms of space, the 2702mm wheelbase is above average in the C-segment SUV category. The front-row driver and passenger benefit from about a fist and two fingers of headroom, with ample legroom provided. Even passengers up to 180cm tall will not feel cramped. The rear seating space performs equally well, with approximately two fists' worth of legroom and one fist of headroom. The slight floor hump for the center passenger is not very high, so comfort is not significantly compromised even when three people are seated in the back. The trunk's standard capacity is sufficient to hold two 28-inch suitcases. Combined with the foldable rear seats, it is also capable of accommodating larger items. The storage compartments inside the car are well-designed, with practical spaces located on the door panels, the central armrest box, and other areas.

In terms of performance, the 2024 XC40 comes equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 183kW and a maximum torque of 350N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and full-time all-wheel drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.4 seconds. In actual driving, power response in the start phase is swift, and the turbo kicks in early without noticeable lag. Mid-to-late acceleration performance remains powerful, with ample power reserve when flooring the accelerator for overtaking, and the transmission quickly downshifts as needed. The 8-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly, with no obvious jerking during daily cruising or hard acceleration. It offers three driving modes: Comfort, Sport, and Eco. In Sport mode, the throttle response is more sensitive, catering to driving enthusiasts. The Comfort mode, on the other hand, emphasizes smoothness and is more suitable for daily commuting.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the steering wheel of the XC40 is precise, has minimal play, moderate return force, and is quite agile to drive. The combination of the front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension is tuned towards comfort. It effectively filters out most vibrations when passing over speed bumps or bumpy roads, maintaining vehicle stability. Body roll is well-controlled during cornering, and the suspension provides adequate support, giving the driver a certain level of confidence. The all-wheel-drive system offers better traction on slippery roads or during light off-road driving, enhancing driving safety.

Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.3L/100km. During our test drive, which was mainly on city roads and highways, the actual fuel consumption was about 8.5L per 100 kilometers. Considering its 2.0T engine displacement and all-wheel-drive system, this fuel consumption performance is within an acceptable range. The braking performance is stable; the brake pedal feedback is linear, and the vehicle maintains good posture during emergency braking, providing sufficient confidence in safety.

Safety features have always been a strong point for Volvo. The 2024 XC40 comes standard with 7 airbags, lane change assist, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and a range of active safety systems. The adaptive cruise control (ACC) effectively reduces the driver's burden during highway driving, and the 360-degree panoramic camera and automatic parking features enhance convenience during parking. These features are relatively comprehensive compared to other vehicles in the same price range, providing solid safety assurance for driving.

In terms of ride comfort, the noise control in the XC40 is quite commendable. Wind and tire noise are not obvious during high-speed driving, and the interior remains quiet. The seat comfort is also worth praise, as prolonged seating doesn't cause fatigue. However, the engine start-stop function can cause slight vibrations when frequently activated in congested traffic, which may slightly affect comfort.

Overall, the 2024 Volvo XC40 delivers good performance in safety features, power performance, and space practicality. Compared to competitors in the same segment, its safety configuration is more comprehensive, and its power output is strong. Although fuel consumption is slightly high, its overall capability is fairly balanced. This car is suitable for families who value safety and comfort, as well as consumers who occasionally enjoy driving pleasure. If you are looking for a well-rounded C-segment SUV, the 2024 XC40 is worth considering.

Owner of 2024 Volvo XC40
As a 2024 Volvo XC40 owner, after driving in Malaysia for three months, I am most satisfied with the safety features and exterior design. I'd give safety a 4 out of 5, as Volvo's reputation for safety is well-deserved—last month in traffic in Georgetown, Penang, the car in front of me suddenly braked, and the automatic braking system brought my car to a stop, preventing a rear-end collision. With seven airbags and seatbelt reminders for all seats, it's much more reassuring when taking my child out (the ISO FIX interface is also very convenient). However, compared to a perfect score of 5, it might lack some more advanced active hazard avoidance features? I haven't encountered extreme situations yet, but it's adequate for daily use. For the exterior, I’d give it a 4 out of 5. The Nordic design looks great on the streets of Kuala Lumpur—the Thor's Hammer LED headlights are highly recognizable, and the body lines manage to be both rounded and slightly rugged. Paired with 19-inch wheels, the car looks fantastic when taking pictures in the historical town of Malacca. However, the downside is that the black paint gets dirty easily, and after the rainy season in Malaysia, frequent car washes are necessary—this could be considered a minor annoyance. Overall, the safety and exterior both meet expectations, making it a strong contender in the local C-Segment!

As the owner of a 2024 Volvo XC40, after driving it for three months in Malaysia, I’m truly impressed by its interior and safety features! The interior is the main reason I would give it full marks—its minimalist Scandinavian design really hits the spot for me. The seats are made of that soft yet perfectly supportive leather material, so even during long traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, I don’t feel any back pain. The 9-inch touchscreen in the center console is very responsive, and combined with the fully digital instrument cluster, it feels tech-savvy without being cluttered. Plus, all the materials used are eco-friendly, and there’s virtually no new car smell, which is incredibly important in a tropical climate! I’d give the performance 4 out of 5. The 2.0T engine paired with the 8-speed automatic transmission is more than sufficient for Malaysia’s road conditions. Overtaking on highways in Selangor is smooth and effortless—the claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.4 seconds is no exaggeration. Even when fully loaded and climbing to Genting Highlands, the power delivery remains seamless, and I never feel it’s underpowered. However, the fuel consumption in the city is around 8.5L/100km, which is slightly higher than the official 7.3L figure. But considering Kuala Lumpur’s constant traffic jams, I think this performance is already quite good. After all, it’s an all-wheel-drive vehicle, and the slight trade-off in fuel economy for added stability is definitely worth it. Safety deserves full marks! Volvo’s safety reputation is no gimmick—just the other day on a rural road in Penang, a stray dog suddenly darted out, and the automatic emergency braking system kicked in and brought the car to an immediate stop, giving me quite a scare! The adaptive cruise control (ACC) is a lifesaver on the North-South Expressway, letting me relax my feet. The lane departure warning is also very responsive, which is crucial as motorbikes often weave in and out on Malaysia’s highways. With 7 airbags and reminders for seatbelt use in all seats, I can take my family on trips without any worries. Plus, the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty makes me feel like I’ve made a solid investment! In conclusion, the XC40’s practicality in Malaysia is truly unbeatable. With its comfortable interior, reliable safety features, and impressive performance, it’s the perfect family car and definitely the right choice!
