2024 Volvo XC40 Review

The C-segment SUV market has become increasingly competitive in recent years. Many family users value both spatial practicality and clear requirements for safety features and driving quality when choosing a car. As a frequent contender in this market segment, the 2024 Volvo XC40 returns this time with more comprehensive safety features and well-balanced power performance. Our main goal for this test drive was to determine whether it can still retain its advantage in its price range by relying on Volvo's iconic safety DNA and practical design.
In terms of appearance, the 2024 XC40 continues its family-style minimalist design. The front face features a waterfall-style grille paired with Volvo's iconic "Thor's Hammer" LED daytime running lights, giving it high recognizability. The car body lines are compact and smooth. With a length of 4425mm and a width of 1873mm, it falls into the conventional range for the C-segment, but the height of 1658mm provides decent headroom. At the rear, the "Viking Axe" LED taillights are striking when lit, echoing the front design. The 19-inch 235/50 R19 tires paired with multi-spoke wheels retain the stability of an SUV without appearing overly bulky.
Inside, the overall interior adopts a minimalist and practical style. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials and adorned with silver trim, giving a quality feel that matches its positioning. The 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display offers smooth operation and clear interface navigation, though some functions require accessing submenus, which may take some time to get used to in everyday use. The fully digital instrument cluster provides rich information, allowing switching between different themes for easy access to core data such as speed and fuel consumption. The front seats feature electric adjustments, with excellent support and cushioning, ensuring comfort even during long drives. The rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split, and when folded down, the trunk capacity can be expanded to meet the storage needs of family trips. The combination of dual-zone automatic climate control for the front and independent air conditioning for the rear is considerate, catering to the needs of various passengers.
In terms of space, the 2702mm wheelbase is above average in the C-segment SUV category. The front-row driver and passenger benefit from about a fist and two fingers of headroom, with ample legroom provided. Even passengers up to 180cm tall will not feel cramped. The rear seating space performs equally well, with approximately two fists' worth of legroom and one fist of headroom. The slight floor hump for the center passenger is not very high, so comfort is not significantly compromised even when three people are seated in the back. The trunk's standard capacity is sufficient to hold two 28-inch suitcases. Combined with the foldable rear seats, it is also capable of accommodating larger items. The storage compartments inside the car are well-designed, with practical spaces located on the door panels, the central armrest box, and other areas.
In terms of performance, the 2024 XC40 comes equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 183kW and a maximum torque of 350N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and full-time all-wheel drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.4 seconds. In actual driving, power response in the start phase is swift, and the turbo kicks in early without noticeable lag. Mid-to-late acceleration performance remains powerful, with ample power reserve when flooring the accelerator for overtaking, and the transmission quickly downshifts as needed. The 8-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly, with no obvious jerking during daily cruising or hard acceleration. It offers three driving modes: Comfort, Sport, and Eco. In Sport mode, the throttle response is more sensitive, catering to driving enthusiasts. The Comfort mode, on the other hand, emphasizes smoothness and is more suitable for daily commuting.
In terms of handling and chassis performance, the steering wheel of the XC40 is precise, has minimal play, moderate return force, and is quite agile to drive. The combination of the front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension is tuned towards comfort. It effectively filters out most vibrations when passing over speed bumps or bumpy roads, maintaining vehicle stability. Body roll is well-controlled during cornering, and the suspension provides adequate support, giving the driver a certain level of confidence. The all-wheel-drive system offers better traction on slippery roads or during light off-road driving, enhancing driving safety.
Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.3L/100km. During our test drive, which was mainly on city roads and highways, the actual fuel consumption was about 8.5L per 100 kilometers. Considering its 2.0T engine displacement and all-wheel-drive system, this fuel consumption performance is within an acceptable range. The braking performance is stable; the brake pedal feedback is linear, and the vehicle maintains good posture during emergency braking, providing sufficient confidence in safety.
Safety features have always been a strong point for Volvo. The 2024 XC40 comes standard with 7 airbags, lane change assist, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and a range of active safety systems. The adaptive cruise control (ACC) effectively reduces the driver's burden during highway driving, and the 360-degree panoramic camera and automatic parking features enhance convenience during parking. These features are relatively comprehensive compared to other vehicles in the same price range, providing solid safety assurance for driving.
In terms of ride comfort, the noise control in the XC40 is quite commendable. Wind and tire noise are not obvious during high-speed driving, and the interior remains quiet. The seat comfort is also worth praise, as prolonged seating doesn't cause fatigue. However, the engine start-stop function can cause slight vibrations when frequently activated in congested traffic, which may slightly affect comfort.
Overall, the 2024 Volvo XC40 delivers good performance in safety features, power performance, and space practicality. Compared to competitors in the same segment, its safety configuration is more comprehensive, and its power output is strong. Although fuel consumption is slightly high, its overall capability is fairly balanced. This car is suitable for families who value safety and comfort, as well as consumers who occasionally enjoy driving pleasure. If you are looking for a well-rounded C-segment SUV, the 2024 XC40 is worth considering.
