Overview

Corolla is the most legendary nameplate from Toyota. It has always represented quality and reliability. All generations of Corolla adhere to the so-called 80 point principle, that is, they achieve above-average performance in all aspects.

Power System

The latest Corolla Altis only has one option: the 2ZR-FE 1.8-liter Dual VVT-i engine. This engine has been on the market for many years, but after a lot of fine-tuning and improvements, it operates very smoothly and the reliability is indisputable. The CVT transmission has also been improved and feels more direct.

Vehicle Size

In terms of size, the Toyota Corolla Altis is comparable in length to the Honda Civic, but it is narrower and taller, making the interior space a bit cramped.

Interior Configuration

The shoulder space is tight, making this car more suited to be a four-seater. The back row has air vents but no USB ports. The front cockpit seat is higher, making it easy to get in and out, but the storage space is limited. The wireless charger is not very practical. The dashboard illuminates in a different color when the CVT is switched to sport mode. The infotainment system is somewhat disappointing, as it lacks the cooler standalone screens found in other markets and doesn't support Android Auto/Apple CarPlay (like the Honda Civic does), but it does offer a similar Mirror Link solution. Update as of June 1, 2020: the 1.8G model now comes with a 9-inch infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, with a price increase of 3000 RM.

Safety System

The highlight of this model is the all-new TNGA platform, as well as the advanced Toyota Safety Sense driving assistance system, making its safety performance better than Honda's comparable model.

Power Performance

On the road, the Corolla Altis does not have as much power as a turbocharged Civic, but its power output is smooth. On the highway, the ride quality is softer and quieter than the Honda Civic. The adaptive cruise control performs well at various speeds and the lane tracking assistance can help reduce fatigue on long drives. The TNGA platform brings a more sporty handling feel, the chassis is strong, and the double wishbone rear suspension makes the vehicle more stable and flexible, but the steering response is slightly lacking.
