Brand

Volkswagen (VW) is a renowned German automobile manufacturer headquartered in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. Established in 1937 by the German Labour Front, Volkswagen gained global recognition after World War II under the guidance of British Army officer Ivan Hirst. It stands as the flagship brand of the Volkswagen Group, the largest automotive manufacturer worldwide in 2016 and 2017. The brand is notably associated with the iconic Beetle and derives its name from the German terms ""Volk"" and ""Wagen,"" translating to ""people's car."" Volkswagen's rich history traces back to the 1930s when it was conceived as part of the Strength Through Joy program. Seeking to create an affordable car for German families, Ferdinand Porsche designed the ""Volksauto,"" incorporating innovative features like an air-cooled rear engine and a distinctive ""beetle"" shape. Volkswagen's global impact is evident, with China being its largest market, contributing 40% of sales and profits. The brand's commitment to innovation, symbolized by the enduring Beetle design, continues to shape the automotive industry.

  • Overview of the series

The Volkswagen Golf GTI, as an iconic and popular hatchback, is known for its unique performance and versatile capabilities.

    Power System

It is equipped with the familiar 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which has been fine-tuned by engineers to provide an additional 15 horsepower and 20 Nm of torque. The total output now reaches 245 horsepower and 370 Nm of torque, paired with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch DSG transmission. The addition of gears enhances acceleration, with a top speed of 250 kilometres/hour. The manufacturer claims a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 6.3 seconds, while actual testing shows a time of 6.68 seconds.

    Fuel Consumption

In a driving test covering about 100 kilometers, with 60% on highways and 40% in urban commuting, the fuel consumption was approximately 9.1 liters per 100 kilometers, which is higher than the claimed 7.4 liters per 100 kilometers.

    Body Size

The new model is longer, taller but narrower, with a wheelbase only increased by 1 millimetre, and the overall size increase has resulted in the car weighing more than 100 kilograms.

    Interior Configuration

The interior space offers more spaciousness, especially in the rear legroom. However, the overall layout has some shortcomings in both functionality and aesthetics, such as the placement and material quality of the central air conditioning vents. Too many features are integrated into the 10-inch Discover Media touchscreen, which can be difficult to operate, and the relevant buttons lack backlighting for nighttime use. On the positive side, it supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

    Safety Systems

The model, priced over 200,000 Malaysian Ringgit, lacks active safety technologies.

Excellent driving and handling, with two satisfying gearbox options, large cargo space in compact cars

    Cons

    The ride feels rather stiff
Shoulder space in the back row is limited
