Toyota’s New 2.0L Engine Could Hit 600hp – A Modern Beast Replacing the Legendary 2JZ

[PCauto] Toyota recently pulled the wraps off its new G20E 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and it’s already turning heads in the performance world. Debuting in the GR Yaris M concept, this mid-mounted setup pairs with an IHI turbocharger to produce between 400 and 450 horsepower.

But here’s where it gets wild. Toyota engineers on-site confirmed that with a bigger turbo kit, the engine could crank out over 600 horsepower. That’s more than double what the current GR Yaris’s three-cylinder G16E-GTS puts out.

Top 3 Strengths of the G20E Engine

The G20E engine stands out with three major advantages. Its cylinder block design allows ample space between cylinders, offering expansion potential comparable to the legendary 2JZ engine. Takashi Uehara, chief engineer, confirmed this design targets “modification enthusiasts who crave surprises.”

Installation flexibility is another key feature. The engine supports both transverse and longitudinal mounting, making it compatible with front-wheel, rear-wheel, and all-wheel drive platforms. To validate its real-world performance, Toyota conducted track tests using the GR Yaris M and even installed a prototype in a Lexus IS last year. Both the engine’s sound and responsiveness received strong positive feedback.

600hp Engine Variant to Stay on the Track Only

Strict emission regulations will limit the performance of the production model. While 600 horsepower is technically achievable, the road-legal version is expected to deliver between 400 and 500 horsepower.

Currently, the most powerful production four-cylinder engine is the Mercedes-AMG M139 (found in the C63) with 469 horsepower. And Mitsubishi once released a limited-edition Lancer Evolution X FQ-440 MR with 440 horsepower. If the G20E reaches a production output of 450 horsepower, it will rank among the top four-cylinder engines.

G20E Engine to Power More GR Models

The engine’s longitudinal layout makes it a perfect fit for the next-generation Supra. It also opens the door for bringing back classic models like a potential new Celica coupe and the MR2 sports car. The transverse version is likely to be used in the next-generation GR Corolla and other high-performance hatchbacks. To fit the new powertrain, the GR Yaris M was given a longer wheelbase during testing, highlighting its focus on performance.

Toyota Says It Won’t Abandon Internal Combustion Engines

With global EV penetration hitting 20% (according to the International Energy Agency in 2023), Toyota is still working closely with Mazda and Subaru to push forward internal combustion engine technology. The three companies are teaming up to develop carbon-neutral fuel solutions, including synthetic fuels and liquid hydrogen.

Akio Toyoda has often stressed a multi-path energy strategy, expecting electric vehicles to hold less than 30% of the market share. Right now, Mazda is focused on developing rotary engine range extenders, Subaru keeps improving its boxer engines, and Toyota’s G20E series is set to be the heart of the Gazoo Racing performance lineup.

The final output of the mass-produced G20E will be adjusted to meet emission standards in different global markets. But for those who still believe in the soul of mechanical performance, this engine offers more than just numbers. With its tuning potential and true motorsport character, the G20E might just be the start of a new chapter—one that picks up where the legendary 2JZ left off and carries it into the future.
