Is the dream of "Iron Man" shattered? The real dilemma of Tesla FSD traffic accidents!
AshleyAug 02, 2024, 12:05 PM
On July 30, local time, authorities in Washington state said they had confirmed that in a fatal traffic accident near Seattle in April the offending Tesla was in FSD (Fully Self-Driving) mode.
The accident occurred in the suburbs of Seattle, where 28-year-old motorcyclist Jeffrey Nissen was knocked down by a Tesla and trapped under the car. He was pronounced dead when he was found.
The offending vehicle was a 2022 Model S. Investigators downloaded data from the car for analysis and confirmed it was using FSD at the time. The driver, who was subsequently arrested, admitted that he was not focused while in FSD mode. He trusted that the machine would take over driving, so he was comfortably using his phone while on the move.
The case is still under investigation and has not yet entered the stage of charges being brought. This negative news inevitably cast doubt on the reliability of Tesla's FSD. In fact, Tesla's autopilot system is divided into two parts: Autopilot and FSD. Autopilot, the predecessor of FSD, is positioned as an automatic auxiliary driving system, with main functions such as adaptive cruise control and lane keeping.
FSD stands for Full Self-Driving, it allows the car to handle many driving tasks under various road conditions, mainly including highways, city streets and so on. As an upgrade to Autopilot, it represents Tesla's pursuit of self-driving technology, which aims to make driving more relaxed and safe.
However, it should be noted that the full name of FSD is actually "FSD Supervised", which means it is a system that needs to be supervised. Tesla also states that neither of these systems can not drive on their own, so human drivers must be ready to take control at any time.
Tesla pointed out in its Model Y owner's manual that the driver using FSD should: "Always remember that the Full Self-Driving (supervised) cannot make the Model Y drive automatically, it requires a fully focused driver ready to take action immediately. During the Full Self-Driving (supervised), you must always monitor the surrounding environment and other road users."
Although the official warning has been given in advance, the announcement of this negative news will still cast a shadow on the FSD that Musk is promoting. The irony is that Musk seems to be full of confidence in the future of FSD, and he has emphasized the advantages and importance of FSD more than once on social media. Yesterday, the news broke out on social media that "BYD's spokesperson believes that it is basically impossible to achieve fully autonomous driving within this year", and Musk commented: BYD needs to change their route as soon as possible, or they will be in trouble.
Musk's rebuttal is understandable, for he had predicted that FSD would be able to run without supervision by the end of this year.
