Kia 2026 Malaysia Market Relaunch: Sole Proprietorship Takes Over Agency, Starting with Three Key Models - EV9, Carnival, and Sportage

【PCauto】Kia Sales Malaysia Company (KSM) has officially launched its brand revival for 2026. This new company, fully owned and managed by Kia headquarters, will commence operations on January 1, 2026—taking over distribution rights from the former importer Bermaz Auto (BAuto). It aims to open a new chapter in the Malaysian market with three core models: the EV9, Carnival, and Sportage.

As Kia's flagship electric SUV, the inclusion of the EV9 is undoubtedly the highlight of the new lineup.

This fully electric model, offered in both 6- and 7-seat configurations, was previously introduced by BAuto featuring a 99.8-kWh battery pack, a driving range of up to 505 km, and priced at RM369,668 for the 7-seater and RM374,668 for the 6-seater.

However, KSM has yet to announce specific 2026 pricing, as the final cost remains subject to policy changes. The full import (CBU) electric-vehicle tax exemptions are set to expire by December 31, 2024, and the Ministry of Finance (MoF) plans to adjust Open Market Value (OMV) policies, which will alter how consumption taxes are calculated. Consequently, the final price of this flagship EV is still unclear.

Notably, KSM's strategy of featuring the EV9 contrasts with that of its sister brand Hyundai Malaysia (HMY), whose current lineup does not yet highlight pure electric models.

Unlike the pricing uncertainty surrounding the EV9, the localization path for the Carnival and Sportage is clearer. Both models will continue to be locally assembled (CKD) by Inokom in Kulim, Kedah, maintaining the production arrangement from the BAuto era.

A well-established full-size MPV in Malaysia, the updated Carnival released in February 2024 was priced between RM198,500 and RM259,888. It offers flexible 7-, 8-, and even 11-seat configurations.

Given that Malaysia has entered an era of unsubsidized diesel, KSM may look to overseas facelift models to potentially introduce a hybrid powertrain option for the Carnival, catering to the market's rising demand for fuel efficiency.

The Sportage is positioned in the highly competitive C-segment SUV market. The version launched by BAuto in December 2024 offered a choice of a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine (base and mid trims) or a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine (the two higher trims), with prices ranging from RM145,999 to RM185,999.

KSM indicated that pricing for this model in 2026 is expected to remain stable, aiming to capture share in the crowded segment with its mature product offering.

Notably, KSM has excluded the Sorento from its initial lineup. This decision appears aimed at avoiding internal competition with the Hyundai Santa Fe, which, as HMY's flagship, has already secured a strong position in the three-row mid-size SUV segment. The Sorento's omission also allows KSM to concentrate resources on its three launch models.

In summary, KSM's initial product strategy balances continuity with innovation: it retains best-sellers like the Carnival and Sportage to maintain core market share, employs the EV9 to enter the new-energy vehicle market and carve out a distinct identity, all while sidestepping internal competition with Hyundai.

With its January 1, 2026, operational start date approaching, the market will watch closely to see how this Korean brand revitalizes its presence in Malaysia under the new management structure.

Ultimately, the EV9's final pricing, the timing of a potential Carnival hybrid introduction, and the cost-optimization potential of localized production will be pivotal factors in determining the success of Kia's revival.
