2026 Nissan March: A Rebirth or the End of the Road for the B-Segment Hatchback?

[PCauto] The Nissan March—famously known as Micra in Europe—has been a staple of the B-segment hatchback market for years. Since its 2010 debut, the K13 March has won over many Malaysian drivers with its iconic rounded styling, ease of driving, and solid fuel economy.

However, as the local automotive landscape shifts towards electrification, this former fan-favourite now stands at a crossroads. With the next-gen Suzuki Swift gaining traction and Chinese EV brands aggressively entering the Southeast Asian market, how will Nissan Malaysia respond?

The Sixth-Generation Micra EV Has Arrived

Nissan has officially taken the wraps off the sixth-generation Micra (March), and it is a massive departure from the K13 we know.

The new model is a fully electric hatchback (BEV) built on the Alliance’s CMF-BEV (AmpR Small) platform, sharing 80% of its DNA with the much-hyped Renault 5 EV. Design-wise, it pays homage to the classic K12 generation with those signature round LED headlamps, but with a more muscular, modern stance.

Key Specs at a Glance:

·         Battery: 40 kWh and 52 kWh options

·         Range: Up to 408 km (WLTP)

·         Fast Charging: 15% to 80% in roughly 30 minutes (DC charging)

While this positions Nissan to reclaim its crown in Europe, the question for Malaysia remains: with charging infrastructure still catching up, is there room for a "premium" EV March?

Matchy’s March: A Retro Nod at Tokyo Auto Salon 2026

At the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon in January, a special “Matchy’s March” stole the spotlight. This restored K10-generation March, a project by students from Nissan Automotive College and Kondo Racing, featured a manual transmission and a racing-inspired livery.

Industry observers see this as a clear signal: Nissan still values the March’s heritage. The buzz surrounding it in early 2026 proves there is still a massive appetite for a reliable, mod-friendly hatchback—even as production of the old K13 ends in most regions.

Could the 2026 March Return to Malaysia as e-POWER?

The B-segment landscape in Malaysia is no longer just about hatchbacks; it's a battle against entry-level crossovers. With the All-New Nissan Serena e-POWER having just made its local debut in March 2026, Nissan’s regional strategy might follow suit:

1.  Downstreaming e-POWER: A revived March could feature the 2nd-gen e-POWER system (1.2L three-cylinder). This would offer that "EV-drive" feel—instant torque and quietness—without the range anxiety of a pure BEV, making it a serious threat to the Honda City Hatchback e:HEV and Toyota Yaris.

2.  Product Substitution: Alternatively, Nissan might focus on the Kicks e-POWER for the premium crowd, leaving the entry-level segment to its second-hand K13 units which still hold a remarkably steady resale value (RV).

Verdict: Is the March Still Relevant?

For those who prioritise bulletproof reliability and low running costs, a used K13 March is still a "top-tier" value buy. But for those looking for zero-emission urban mobility, the 2026 Micra EV is the one to watch. The March is not disappearing—it’s just evolving to stay competitive in a greener era.
