[PCauto] The long-rumored "compact Toyota Land Cruiser" has finally unveiled its mystery. This tough new creation, codenamed Land Cruiser FJ, has been officially scheduled for a global debut in Thailand on March 21.
For those obsessed with the rugged genes of the Land Cruiser but deterred by the high price of the 300 series or 250 series, this compact off-road vehicle built on the IMV 0 platform is undoubtedly the most anticipated surprise of the year.

Practicality wrapped in retro design
The Land Cruiser FJ's exterior doesn’t blindly pursue trendy urban-style modifications but instead chooses to pay homage to the classic FJ40.
The boxy design, iconic round headlights, and the modular split bumper designed to reduce collision repair costs all emphasize its unrefined wild charm.

In terms of chassis structure, this car adopts the ladder-frame chassis shared with the Hilux Champ (the production version of the IMV 0 concept).
This approach can take advantage of the highly mature and durable commercial vehicle chassis, wrapped in a nostalgic exterior that will excite off-road enthusiasts.

Its body length is approximately 4,575 mm, and the wheelbase has been streamlined to 2,580 mm. Compared to the bulky 250 series, the shorter wheelbase of the Land Cruiser FJ means it has better approach angles and agility.
When dealing with complex forest trails or narrow rocky areas, this advantage in size often proves to be more useful than electronic assistance systems.

Land Cruiser FJ's Power System
Land Cruiser FJ is expected to be equipped uniformly with the proven 2.7L 2TR-FE naturally aspirated gasoline engine, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission (6AT).
Although the power parameters are not impressive, with a maximum horsepower of 163 PS and peak torque of 246 Nm, the biggest selling point of this powertrain lies in its reliability.

During a journey through remote wilderness, complex turbocharging systems or precise hybrid powertrains often imply a higher risk of failure.
On the other hand, the characteristics of this naturally aspirated engine—being undemanding on fuel quality and structurally simple—ensure that drivers can still return home safely even in extreme environments.
Combined with a highly mechanical part-time four-wheel-drive system, the off-road capabilities of the Land Cruiser FJ are far beyond those of ordinary city SUVs.

Might take some market share from the Suzuki Jimny
Based on the currently available information, the estimated price of the Land Cruiser FJ in Thailand ranges from 137,000 to 162,000 MYR.
This pricing is absolutely killer. It precisely targets the price gap between the Suzuki Jimny and the GWM Tank 300.

Compared to the overly cramped Jimny, the Land Cruiser FJ offers greater practicality and loading capacity; and compared to the luxury-oriented, technology-heavy Tank 300, this Toyota provides a purer, more rugged mechanical aesthetic.
For those who genuinely need a vehicle for long-term exploration or want a "heavy-duty toy," this simplified logic may actually be more appealing.
Is the Land Cruiser FJ really flawless?
Of course, we must point out the obvious "tool attributes" of the Land Cruiser FJ.
Being developed on a commercial vehicle platform means you probably shouldn't expect much in terms of ride quality refinement. The chassis' shock absorption subtlety and noise isolation during high-speed driving will likely remain at a rather rugged level.
The interior space also adheres to a practical-first philosophy, with abundant hard plastics that are easy to clean but undeniably lack the so-called "premium feel."
It's not a meticulously refined vehicle designed for attending galas in a suit, but rather a dependable companion you can hop into—even when you're covered in mud—with peace of mind and drive home.

The significance of the Land Cruiser FJ lies in making the Land Cruiser brand more accessible again.
It doesn't flaunt technology or boast luxury. Instead, it allocates all of its costs to durability and off-road capability.
The official launch on March 21st will reveal more configuration details, but regardless, this highly distinctive and reasonably priced hardcore vehicle is already enough to reignite the long-stagnant compact off-road market.
