[PCauto] Toyota officially unveiled the all-new Land Cruiser FJ in Japan. As a highly anticipated compact SUV, it is confirmed to launch in Japan in mid-2026.

Since its birth in 1951 under the name Toyota BJ and becoming the first vehicle to climb to the sixth station (a key waypoint) of Mount Fuji, the Land Cruiser series has sold approximately 12.15 million units across 190 countries and regions worldwide, establishing itself as an enduring global symbol of off-road capability, spanning over seven decades.

The FJ carries forward the core Toyota DNA of reliability, durability, and off-road prowess, while simultaneously broadening its appeal to a younger generation of buyers.

The new Land Cruiser FJ continues the design language of previous generations

The FJ retains a characteristically boxy cabin silhouette—a design philosophy inherited from previous Land Cruiser generations that prioritizes both passenger space and cargo capacity. The FJ retains a characteristically boxy cabin silhouette prioritizes both passenger space and cargo capacity. Additionally, the front and rear bumper end caps feature a modular three-piece detachable structure, contributing to its visually stout yet playful presence.

Concealed within its boxy silhouette are sculpted surfaces inspired by the dice, which create a striking play of light and shadow that emphasizes its sculptural form.

The front and rear corner bumpers feature a modular three-piece detachable structure, not only allowing individual panels to be replaced separately in case of damage—significantly reducing repair costs—but also providing pre-designed mounting points for off-road enthusiasts to quickly install protective plates or winches.

Pre-drilled mounting points are integrated behind the bumper, enabling users to install additional equipment without the need for cutting or welding.

The interior is designed with an emphasis on practicality

The interior features a low-profile dashboard and horizontal center console layout to enhance forward and road visibility, with all functional buttons and screens arranged according to the principle of "minimizing eye movement."

The specially treated anti-glare surface on the top of the dashboard ensures optimal readability even in harsh lighting conditions, while the control knobs are designed with enlarged grooves for precise operation even when wearing gloves.

The standard Toyota Safety Sense active safety suite ensures a confident and pleasant driving experience, even in complex road conditions.

Additionally, the interior side of the tailgate is fully covered with a MOLLE webbing panel. The anchoring point spacing is carefully calculated to securely hold outdoor equipment of various sizes, from first-aid kits to tools, adding another layer to the ownership experience, and enhancing both its real-world capability and the joy of tailoring it to your needs.

How is the off-road capability of the Land Cruiser FJ?

The Land Cruiser FJ underwent extensive field off-road testing during its development phase, continually refining its reliability and off-road capabilities.

Though compact in size, the FJ possesses genuine Land Cruiser-level off-road strength. It adopts the non-load-bearing platform refined through extensive use in the IMV series such as Hilux and Fortuner, ensuring adequate ground clearance and approach angles.

Key parts of the vehicle's underside are reinforced with transverse strengthening beams. By incorporating designs usually seen on specialized aftermarket components directly into the body from the factory, Toyota has created an inherently stiffer platform.

Its wheel articulation matches that of the classic 70 series. Complemented by a short wheelbase of just 2580mm (270mm shorter than the Land Cruiser 250 series) and a minimum turning radius of 5.5 meters grants, the Land Cruiser FJ enjoys exceptional maneuverability in tight and rugged terrain.

In terms of power, the Land Cruiser FJ is equipped with a 2.7L 2TR-FE gasoline engine, delivering a maximum output of 163 horsepower and torque of 246 Nm. It is paired with a 6-speed Super ECT automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel-drive system.

FJ Primarily Targets Emerging Markets

The FJ is catering specifically to the needs of emerging markets such as Japan, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, with no current plans to enter North America or Europe.

Its affordable estimated price will address the market gap for a capable, value-oriented off-roader, appealing to young consumers who seek to break free from generic urban SUVs and pursue individuality and adventure.

In an era increasingly dominated by EVs, the FJ's commitment to a pure internal combustion engine reaffirms its off-road essence — a direct response to traditional enthusiasts' craving for an authentic driving experience.
