What is the fuel consumption of X70? Is X70 a worthwhile SUV to buy?

[PCauto] Proton X70 is undoubtedly one of the most talked-about C-Segment SUVs on the market, boasting an impressive array of features. Its exterior displays a striking, stylish design with fluid body lines that blend dynamism with a sense of solidity.
Inside, the cabin is outfitted with a large central touchscreen that seamlessly connects to your smartphone, enabling a suite of smart functions. The seats are exceptionally comfortable, ensuring that both driver and passengers enjoy a truly pleasant ride.
Under the hood, every Proton X70 is equipped with a standard 1.5L TGDI engine mated to a 7-speed DCT transmission. Such powertrain delivers up to 174Ps of horsepower and a peak torque of 255N·m, providing ample power for dynamic performance. Proton also emphasizes that the optimized configuration not only enhances overall performance but also improves fuel economy, reducing consumption by an additional 4% to achieve 7.3L/100km.
To illustrate Proton X70’s fuel efficiency in more tangible terms, we interviewed three owners with varying driving scenarios:
Mr. Lin, a frequent highway business driver, remarked:
“Because of my job, I cover a few hundred kilometers on the highway almost every day. I’m very satisfied with Proton X70’s performance on the highway for its stable power. When cruising steadily at 100–110 km/h, the fuel consumption averages about 7.5L/100km, which is acceptable for me. I value its stability and comfort as they enable me to complete my work trips efficiently.”
Ms. Wang, who uses X70 solely for her daily commute, noted:
“Although my one-way trip is just a dozen kilometers, urban driving with frequent stops and traffic lights pushes the fuel consumption to around 10–11L/100km, relatively high figures. Even though these numbers aren’t the most impressive, the roomy interior is a huge advantage. Sometimes, I may make a stop at the supermarket after work and the extra space makes it very convenient to carry all my purchases. For my daily life, convenience matters most.”
Mr. Chen, who frequently embarks on family trips, shared:
“During holidays, our family always takes X70 on the road. Whether cruising on highways or exploring provincial and county roads in search of less well-known destinations, our combined fuel consumption averages around 8.5L/100km. The spacious cabin ensures every journey is comfortable with generous rear legroom and a boot that easily accommodates all our luggage. Even if the fuel figures aren’t the lowest, the overall comfort makes it a worthwhile choice.”
Proton X70 is fitted with a 55-liter fuel tank, which is standard for its class. As fuel consumption varies with driving conditions, so too does the distance achievable on a full tank. For instance:
Mr. Lin’s highway driving (7.5L/100km): A full tank could theoretically cover about 733 kilometers (55 ÷ 7.5 × 100).
Ms. Wang’s urban commute (approximately 10L/100km): A full tank should get her roughly 550 kilometers (55 ÷ 10 × 100).
Mr. Chen’s mixed driving (8.5L/100km): A full tank would provide approximately 647 kilometers (55 ÷ 8.5 × 100).
Admittedly, compared to other cars in its segment, X70’s fuel consumption isn’t exceptionally competitive. Some rival models typically offer 1–2L/100km better performance under similar conditions. However, Proton X70’s key selling point is its affordability.
Overall, X70 is priced several tens of thousands of Malaysian Ringgit lower than competitors such as CR-V. What’s more, its spacious cabin comfortably caters to both passenger and cargo needs, effectively addressing diverse daily travel and lifestyle requirements.
These advantages have clearly resonated with consumers. In 2024, X70 sold a total of 7,536 units, even topping its segment in September with 1,466 vehicles sold. Such impressive sales figures underscore that when consumers weigh value for money and practical interior space, Proton X70 emerges as a truly worthwhile SUV purchase.
