BYD Sealion 7 Common Issues: Must-Read Before Buying

[PCauto] As an important model for BYD in the mid-sized pure electric SUV market, BYD Sealion 7 has directly aimed at the Tesla Model Y since its release, thanks to its e-Platform 3.0 architecture and CTB (cell-to-body) technology.

However, as the first batch of new cars is gradually delivered to owners in the Asia-Pacific region, real user feedback has begun to appear on social media and major automotive forums. So how reliable is this electric vehicle, which blends sporty performance with a high level of digitalization?

Limited Power and Charging Performance

In terms of the core three-electric system, the performance of the Blade Battery equipped in the BYD Sealion 7 remains robust.

Thanks to the physical characteristics of its lithium iron phosphate (LFP) material, users generally have little concern over battery lifespan.

However, in the more complex electronic control layer, some owners have reported issues that cannot be ignored.

The most troubling complaint from owners is the occasional "Power Limited" warning.

According to the feedback, this is usually related to the software logic of the Power Domain Control or sensor communication anomalies. Although such issues can usually be resolved by restarting the vehicle or performing software initialization at the dealership, the sudden appearance of a yellow warning during high-speed driving is indeed concerning.

Furthermore, in terms of charging, although the high-end models support 230kW DC fast charging power, some owners noticed that when the battery charge exceeds 50% (before even reaching 80%), the charging power rapidly drops to below 80kW, significantly reducing the charging speed.

ADAS Features Are Too Sensitive

BYD Sealion 7 is equipped with a wealth of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), but in real-world driving environments, its tuning logic appears to be overly "aggressive."

·         Fatigue Monitoring System: The infrared camera located on the A-pillar monitors the driver's condition very strictly. Some owners report that even just turning to look at the side mirror or wearing specific types of sunglasses triggers frequent fatigue warnings, which distracts them from focusing on driving.

·         Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB): In congested urban traffic, due to the common motorcycle lane-splitting practice in Southeast Asia, the AEB system occasionally activates "phantom braking," with its braking intervention being quite abrupt and potentially startling drivers of vehicles behind.

·         Lane Keeping Assist (LKA): In areas where lane markings are unclear or under construction, the system's steering intervention force is relatively strong, causing the driver to sometimes need to "fight" for control of the steering wheel.

Interior Craftsmanship and NVH Issues

The BYD Sealion 7 indeed offers a more premium feel than many of its rivals in the same segment, but owners have shared honest feedback regarding its long-term durability details.

First is the NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) performance.

Although the front row is equipped with double-layer soundproof glass, some owners notice slight wind noise from the A-pillar area when driving at speeds over 110km/h.

Meanwhile, models equipped with 20-inch wheels exhibit noticeable tire noise on rough road surfaces, which is related to the factory-installed high-performance tires being oriented more toward grip rather than noise reduction.

Second is the maintenance of interior materials.

The piano black panels extensively used inside the cabin, although dazzling in showroom settings, are highly prone to fingerprints and fine scratches in daily use.

More importantly, some owners have reported faint plastic squeaks and rattles coming from inside the dashboard and the central infotainment screen mount when driving on bumpy roads in high temperatures.

Is the BYD Sealion 7 Worth Buying?

Returning to the core question: Is it worth buying?

In terms of overall product strength, the BYD Sealion 7 remains a highly competitive option in its price range, especially for its powertrain response, chassis ride comfort (notably with the FSD variable-frequency damping shock absorbers), and the safety of its core three-electric system.

Overall, the BYD Sealion 7 is a highly mature product, and the issues reported are mostly minor flaws related to software adaptation and build quality details.

With the iterative updates of the brand's OTA and the accumulation of electronic fault diagnosis experience in the after-sales service network, these problems are expected to improve over time.
