Where is the RM 20k Difference between Toyota Veloz and Perodua Alza? Which One is Your Favorite?
AshleyApr 10, 2024, 10:51 AM
The 2022 Perodua Alza and 2022 Toyota Veloz are built on the same platform, share the same power system, and are both produced by the Perodua Rawang factory.
However, the 2022 Toyota Veloz is priced at RM 95,000, which is RM 20,000 more expensive than the top-of-the-line 2022 Perodua Alza. You might be wondering whether the buyers of the 2022 Toyota Veloz are buying it for the Toyota emblem, or other configurations.
Here is a list of differences between the 2022 Toyota Veloz and the 2022 Perodua Alza.
The differences in front and rear bumper designs of Veloz and Alza
The main styling differences between the 2022 Perodua Alza and the 2022 Toyota Veloz are concentrated on the front and rear bumpers and wheel arches.
The biggest differences lie in the designs of the radiator grille and fog lamp decorative plates, while the wheel arches of the 2022 Toyota Veloz are more clearly contoured on the side view. The rear part's lower edge of the rear bumper and the end rear reflectors are also different.
2022 Toyota Veloz equipped with bigger wheels
The 2022 Toyota Veloz comes with a larger 17-inch wheel, while the Alza AV and H models are equipped with 16-inch wheels, and the entry-level Alza X model only comes with 15-inch wheels.
Toyota Veloz is fitted with larger wheel rims that give its Toyota siblings a more luxurious and sporty appearance.
The 2022 Toyota Veloz offers LED headlights and DRL
The 2022 Toyota Veloz comes with LED headlights and LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) for a more stylish lighting standard.
On the other hand, the 2022 Perodua Alza is equipped with LED headlights and LED front fog lights in AV and H models. Although you can add a RM 2,500 GearUp kit for an extra charge, and add LEDs at the bottom of the front lip, these are just LED guide lights, not DRLs.
2022 Toyota Veloz Offers Two-Tone Paint
Although Veloz and Alza both offer 5 body colors, the 2022 Toyota Veloz offers two two-tone body paints (silver/black roof and blue/black roof) for an additional fee of RM 1,300.
On the other hand, the 2022 Perodua Alza also offers five colors. Garnet Red and Vintage Brown are only available for Alza H and AV models.
The ground clearance of the 2022 Toyota Veloz is higher than that of the 2022 Perodua Alza
The ground clearance of the 2022 Toyota Veloz is 190 mm, which is 30 mm higher than the 2022 Alza's 160 mm.
The ground clearance of the 2022 Toyota Veloz is still lower than Xpander's (205 mm), but it gives Veloz a more imposing SUV stance, while the ride height of Alza is closer to that of a "traditional" MPV, such as Proton Exora.
The 2022 Toyota Veloz is equipped with a roof rack
The roof rack of the 2022 Toyota Veloz highlights a more robust SUV style, while the 2022 Alza does not offer a roof rack configuration.
2022 Toyota Veloz gets full-size LED tail light bar
On the rear tailgate of the 2022 Toyota Veloz, the word "Veloz" is printed, and the LED light bar spans the entire tailgate and merges with the factory emblem.
The 2022 Perodua Alza taillight bar is shorter and has no Azla badge in the middle.
The 2022 Toyota Veloz has a different cabin design
Apart from aesthetic differences, the 2022 Toyota Veloz has some interior styling upgrades to make it feel more luxurious.
The most noticeable are the white center instrument panel trim strip, and the patterned silver trim strips on both sides of the center console. On the top-spec Alza 1.5 AV, the same decoration is changed to a red panel.
Upon closer observation, you will find that Alza and Veloz are equipped with different air conditioning vent designs.
Blue ambient light is a standard configuration for Veloz
The 2022 Toyota Veloz provides blue ambient lighting, with LED lights along the side of the door panel and control panel.
For Alza owners who want to install LED atmospheric lights, Perodua also provides floor lights as part of Alza's GearUp kit, with a retail price of RM 250.
Veloz is the first Toyota model to offer wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
Veloz and Alza are equipped with the same size 9-inch phonograph, but Veloz has confirmed to provide wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connection functions.
On the other hand, the 2022 Perodua Alza uses wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In other words, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are only available for the top-of-the-line Alza 1.5 AV model.
The 2022 Toyota Veloz provides a wireless Qi charging function, which is located behind the electronic handbrake, and underneath the center armrest to maintain cleanliness and convenience, while the 2022 Perodua Alza can only provide wired charging through the USB charging port.
The 2022 Toyota Veloz comes with an air conditioning control interface equipped with automatic constant-temperature air conditioning. On the other hand, the 2022 Perodua Alza comes with the familiar Perodua air conditioning interface, which does not have automatic constant temperature air conditioning control, but provides 2 preset air conditioning settings. Alza also provides foot and front windshield defogging functions.
Although the 2022 Toyota Veloz and the 2022 Perodua Alza share the same platform and powertrain, the significant price gap between them has sparked debate among consumers over brand premium versus real-world value. The Veloz is priced at RM 95,000, while the top-spec Alza AV costs only RM 75,000, a difference of RM 20,000. This disparity is not only reflected in the appearance and configuration but also extends to the daily driving experience and user satisfaction.
Many potential buyers will weigh Toyota's brand reputation against Alza's practical cost-effectiveness when making a choice.
For example, the Veloz's 17-inch wheels not only enhance the visual luxury but also improve driving stability. They offer smoother handling, especially on uneven roads. In contrast, the Alza's 16-inch or 15-inch wheels focus more on economy and comfort, making them suitable for city commuting.
This difference in wheel size directly affects the vehicle's dynamic performance. The Veloz's larger wheels combined with a higher ground clearance create an SUV-like stance, making it easier to navigate rough terrains. The Alza's 160 mm ground clearance is more suitable for flat roads, reducing wind resistance and optimizing fuel efficiency.
In terms of the lighting system, the Veloz comes standard with LED headlights and daytime running lights, which not only improve nighttime safety but also add a stylish touch to the vehicle. The Alza's LED headlights are available on the AV and H models, but you need to pay an extra RM 2,500 for the GearUp package to get a similar effect.
These lighting configurations make a noticeable difference in daily use. The Veloz's automatic lighting function turns on automatically in low-light conditions, providing more intelligent driving assistance, while the Alza's settings rely more on manual operation.
Moreover, the Veloz's two-tone paint options, such as a silver/black roof, cost an additional RM 1,300 and add a personalized style to the vehicle, attracting buyers who want a unique look. The Alza has a wide range of color choices but lacks this two-tone option, limiting its visual appeal.
The roof rack is another highlight of the Veloz. It enhances the SUV style and increases practicality, making it suitable for families to carry extra gear on long-distance trips. The Alza doesn't come with this feature, and users need to install it themselves, which adds extra cost and inconvenience.
In terms of interior design, the Veloz's white dashboard trim and blue ambient lighting create a high-end atmosphere and improve the comfort of the cockpit. These details can relieve fatigue during daily driving, and the lighting effect is particularly remarkable at night. The Alza's interior is practical, but it lacks an automatic climate control system and wireless functions. Its air-conditioning interface relies on preset modes, which is not as convenient as the Veloz's automatic adjustment.
The Veloz's wireless Qi charging and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connection simplify mobile phone use, reduce cable clutter, and enhance convenience. The Alza only supports wired connection, which requires frequent plugging and unplugging, and is a bit inconvenient in a mobile-office scenario.
Although these functional differences are small, they add up to an overall improvement in the experience. Veloz users report that its interior is easier to clean and maintain, while the Alza's plastic materials, although durable, lack a sense of luxury.
In terms of safety, both cars share the same safety features, such as multiple airbags and a stability control system. However, the Veloz's higher ground clearance and SUV stance may provide additional protection in an accident, especially in a side-impact collision where the body structure is stronger.
In terms of performance, since both cars share a 1.5L engine, their power output and fuel efficiency are similar. However, the Veloz's larger wheels and higher body slightly increase its weight, affecting the acceleration response. In actual tests, the Alza's 0-100 km/h time is slightly faster, making it more suitable for users who pursue agile driving.
The fuel economy data is similar, with both achieving about 15 km/L in city driving. However, the Veloz's SUV design has slightly higher wind resistance at high speeds, which may lead to slightly higher fuel consumption. Maintenance cost is also a key consideration. Toyota has a more extensive service network in Southeast Asia, and the average maintenance cost is 10-15% higher than Perodua's. For example, a regular maintenance of the Veloz costs about RM 500, while the Alza costs RM 450. The cumulative difference over the long-term use is significant.
Ultimately, the choice between the Veloz and the Alza depends on personal preference and budget. The RM 20,000 premium of the Veloz not only comes with Toyota's brand guarantee but also offers more comprehensive feature upgrades, such as wireless connectivity and a high-end interior, making it an ideal choice for those who pursue a quality life.
The Alza meets basic needs at an affordable price, being safe and practical, and is suitable for cost-conscious buyers. In the Southeast Asian market, this difference reflects the diversified trend of automobile consumption, and the Toyota Veloz continues to win favor with its comprehensive advantages.
