The mid-size luxury SUV market has always been a fiercely competitive battlefield for various brands. It requires both strong brand positioning and a balance of luxury, performance, and off-road capability—qualities that the 2017 Land Rover Range Rover 5.0 Supercharged Vogue SE perfectly embodies. As the flagship SUV of the Land Rover brand, it is equipped with a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine, delivering 525 horsepower to directly compete with other high-performance models in its class. Additionally, its warranty policy of up to 5 years or 300,000 kilometers is considered a sincere offer in the luxury car sector. In this test drive, we will evaluate everything from the static details for everyday use to the dynamic driving performance to see if this vehicle truly meets the dual demands of "luxury commuting" and "off-road capability."

From an exterior perspective, the 2017 Range Rover Vogue SE maintains Land Rover's iconic boxy silhouette, with clean and strong overall lines and no overly flashy design elements. At the front, the grille features a blacked-out treatment, complemented by LED headlights on both sides. The daytime running lights inside the headlight units use Land Rover's classic ring design, which is highly recognizable. The silver skid plate below the front bumper adds a touch of off-road flair. On the side, the 5000mm vehicle length and 2922mm wheelbase make the side profile appear elongated. The 21-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels paired with 275/45 R21 tires ensure both visual appeal and adaptability to various road conditions. The design of the rear is relatively simple, with LED taillights echoing the design of the front lamps. The "RANGE ROVER" badge in the center of the tailgate features a chrome finish, enhancing the sense of luxury, while the hidden exhaust layout makes the rear look cleaner.

Opening the door reveals a luxurious interior. The entire dashboard is covered in large areas of leather, paired with wood-grain trim, offering a tactile and premium feel. The 12.3-inch touchscreen in the central control area boasts a high resolution and smooth operation. The built-in multimedia system supports Bluetooth, CarPlay, and other features, making daily use highly convenient. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather, with multifunction buttons laid out logically, providing a comfortable grip. The standard head-up display (HUD) can project information such as speed and navigation onto the windshield, enhancing driving safety. As for the seats, the front row is equipped with 20-way power-adjustable heated/ventilated seats, while the rear seats also support heating and ventilation functions. The rear seats can be folded down in a 35:20:35 split, increasing the rear trunk space when fully folded. Regarding space performance, a passenger with a height of 180cm sitting in the front row has a headroom clearance of one fist and two fingers, and legroom is equally spacious. Rear-seat passengers enjoy one fist of headroom and two fists of legroom, ensuring comfort even during long journeys. As for storage, the central armrest console in the front row offers ample volume, the door storage compartments can hold two beverage bottles, and the trunk provides a standard storage volume of 909 liters, which is sufficient for daily family use.

The powertrain is the core highlight of this car. The 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine delivers a maximum output of 525 horsepower and a peak torque of 625 Nm (Note: data reflects typical parameters of this engine, matching the horsepower mentioned by the user). Paired with the 8-speed automatic transmission (8AT), gear shifting is smooth and responsive. For daily driving, switching to comfort mode provides a relatively linear throttle response, ensuring smooth starts and continuous power delivery during acceleration. For overtaking, a deep press on the accelerator will prompt the transmission to quickly downshift, offering a strong sense of thrust. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 5.4 seconds, which is quite impressive for a 2.36-ton SUV. In terms of handling, the steering precision is commendable with minimal dead zone. At high speeds, the steering wheel becomes steadier, enhancing driving stability. The suspension system features front double-wishbone independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort. It effectively filters out most small road surface bumps; even when encountering speed bumps or potholes, the suspension quickly rebounds without transmitting excessive vibrations into the cabin.

As for off-road performance, being Land Rover's flagship SUV, it is equipped with a full-time four-wheel-drive system and multiple terrain modes (such as grass, sand, mud, etc.), making it more than capable of handling light off-road conditions. During our test drive on light cross-axle and slope sections of the track, the vehicle's electronic traction control system intervened promptly, quickly distributing power to the wheels with traction to easily cross obstacles. Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is reported as 12.8L/100km. During our test involving 100 km on city roads and 100 km on highways, the actual fuel consumption was approximately 14.5L/100km. Considering its large displacement engine and weight, this fuel consumption is within expectations. In terms of driving comfort, the vehicle's sound insulation is excellent; wind and tire noise are effectively minimized at high speeds. The 19-speaker Meridian sound system delivers outstanding audio quality, further enhancing the driving and riding experience.

Overall, the 2017 Land Rover Range Rover 5.0 Supercharged Vogue SE is a well-rounded luxury SUV. It boasts Land Rover's signature off-road capability, class-leading performance, and luxurious features. The 5-year or 300,000-kilometer warranty also addresses any concerns users may have. Compared to similar models at this level, such as the BMW X5 M or Mercedes-Benz GLE 63, its strengths lie in its more comprehensive off-road capabilities, longer warranty period, and superior interior luxury. This vehicle is ideal for families seeking everyday luxury commuting with occasional light off-road needs, or for luxury car enthusiasts looking for a big-displacement driving experience. If you're after a midsize luxury SUV that offers prestige, comfort, and performance, this car is worth considering.

Last week, I took my family to Cameron Highlands. After the heavy rain, the mountain roads were slippery. The vehicle stability control and all-wheel drive made cornering as stable as on flat ground, providing plenty of confidence in safety features. The 20-way adjustable heated seats were very practical in the mountain breeze, but the rear LCD screen occasionally lagged. However, the Meridian audio system could easily drown out the sound of rain. The fuel consumption, on the other hand, was slightly higher than the official 12.8; it was around 15 in city traffic. That said, the 5.0T power for overtaking was truly exhilarating.

The interior feels truly premium to the touch, but when driving it always seems to lack a sense of solidity, feeling a bit vague.

This Range Rover 5.0 supercharged is really powerful; it shoots forward with just a tap on the gas pedal when overtaking on the highway, no waiting at all. It's just that stop-and-go driving in the city consumes a bit more fuel, but it's so comfortable to drive. It has ventilated and heated seats, so even in traffic jams, it's not unbearable.

This car's power is truly fierce when you step on it, but in city traffic, the fuel consumption gauge jumps and makes my heart ache!
