For Malaysia's 4x4 pickup truck market, durability, practicality, and balanced pricing have always been core demands of consumers—after all, whether it is for daily cargo transport, weekend off-road adventures, or short family trips, a pickup truck must play the role of a "jack-of-all-trades." The 2018 Isuzu D-MAX 2.5L 4x4 MT, being one of the popular choices in this segment, boasts Isuzu's signature diesel engine reliability as its biggest highlight, as well as whether its price under 100,000 MYR can meet users' expectations for features and off-road capability. This time, we conducted a test drive to verify whether it can truly balance both "work" and "family use" scenarios.

From its exterior, the 2018 D-MAX's design leans towards being tough and practical without excessive decorations. The front features a large chrome-plated grille paired with angular halogen headlights on both sides, with daytime running lights as standard that provide decent visibility when illuminated. The side profile of the body has straight lines, and the length of 5,295mm with a wheelbase of 3,095mm ensures rear passenger space and practicality of the cargo bed. The slightly protruding wheel arches are not overdone, paired with 245/70R16 tires that can handle unpaved roads while not seeming out of place on regular roads. At the rear, the vertical taillight cluster fits snugly to the body, and the rear bumper includes a black scratch-resistant guard plate. The overall styling aligns with the positioning of a utilitarian pickup truck—visually appealing and not easily outdated.

Opening the door reveals an interior layout focused on simplicity and practicality. The dashboard is made of hard plastic material, which, although lacking in luxury, feels solid, and the buttons and knobs offer a clear sense of resistance. The instrument panel uses backlit mechanical gauges, with the left side displaying engine RPM and fuel levels, the right side showing speed and water temperature, and a small screen in the middle for mileage and basic driving information, which are easy to read. The central control area lacks a large touchscreen and retains physical buttons and knobs, making operations straightforward. In terms of features, keyless entry stands out, allowing you to unlock the door without taking out the key; the front is equipped with single-zone manual air conditioning, which is simple and intuitive to adjust; a 220V/230V power outlet is practical for users needing to connect external devices; and rear passengers also get air conditioning vents to enhance comfort. The seats are manually adjustable, with adequate support for the front seats. The rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split to expand storage space, suitable for occasional cargo needs.

Space performance is one of D-MAX's strengths. The front row offers ample space, and a 175cm-tall passenger still has a fist-width of headroom after adjusting the seat. The rear row is also spacious, providing about two fist-widths of legroom and one fist of headroom, allowing for comfortable long-duration seating. Regarding storage, the door pockets can hold two bottles of water, there is a storage compartment under the dashboard, the central front armrest box has moderate capacity, and there are two cup holders at the rear, which adequately meet daily use needs.

For dynamic driving, the 2.5L diesel engine has a maximum output of 136PS and maximum torque generated at 1,800rpm. Paired with a manual transmission, the power response during start is relatively active, with enough low-end torque to handle uphill drives or starts, even under full load conditions. Switching to 4WD mode significantly improves its ability to handle unpaved roads, easily navigating through mud or gravel; however, being a part-time 4WD system, its extreme off-road capabilities are limited, though sufficient for most Malaysian users' weekend light off-road needs. The steering wheel feels on the heavier side with average precision, consistent with pickup truck tuning. At high speeds, the steering feels more stable, providing acceptable stability. The suspension system uses a double-wishbone independent front suspension and a rear leaf-spring non-independent suspension. It doesn't filter out bumps on uneven roads very delicately, and passing speed bumps or bumpy roads results in noticeable vibrations in the rear, but this is a common characteristic of pickups, given the need to balance the load capacity of the cargo bed.

In terms of fuel consumption, we tested it under mixed road conditions, and the fuel consumption was approximately 8.5L per 100 kilometers. The fuel economy of the diesel engine performed well. With a fuel tank capacity of 76L, the cruising range can exceed 800 kilometers when fully refueled, making it suitable for long-distance driving. Regarding noise control, the noise of the diesel engine is more noticeable at idle, but as the vehicle moves, wind and tire noise tend to overshadow the engine noise. Overall, the noise level is within an acceptable range and does not affect the normal conversation of passengers inside the vehicle.

Regarding safety features, it comes standard with ABS, vehicle stability control, dual airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, front and rear parking sensors, and front and rear cameras. Although there are only two airbags, all the basic safety features are included, meeting the safety needs of daily use.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2018 Isuzu D-MAX 2.5L 4x4 MT are its reliable diesel power, spacious interior, practical features, and decent off-road capability. Priced at 97,150 MYR, it offers outstanding value for money among its peers in the pickup segment. Compared to competitors in the same price range, its practical features like keyless entry and a 220V power outlet are more useful, and Isuzu's diesel engine reputation is also more reliable.

This vehicle is particularly suited for individuals with clear needs: those who require a vehicle that can serve both daily commuting and occasional cargo transport, as well as weekend outdoor enthusiasts or practical family users. It does not stand out for luxury, but in terms of reliability and practicality, it strikes a good balance. It is a versatile pickup truck that "does a little bit of everything."

If you are looking for a reasonably priced, durable pickup truck that balances family use and light off-road capability, the 2018 Isuzu D-MAX 2.5L 4x4 MT is worth considering. It may not be the most stunning, but it is certainly one of the most worry-free choices.

Previously driving a Japanese sedan often slipped on the muddy roads during the rainy season in East Malaysia, but after switching to the D-MAX 4x4 MT, it handles it with ease! The exterior is manly enough, and parking it next to Kuala Lumpur's Central Market gets plenty of attention; while the interior has a strong plastic feel, it's durable. On weekends, I take my family to Genting Highlands, and the hill-start assist and diesel low torque provide stable climbs. The 60:40 split foldable rear seat can even store camping gear. Safety is unquestionable — I was rear-ended on the North-South Expressway last time, and the airbags deployed, leaving me unharmed. A minor drawback is that the manual transmission can get tiring during the early morning rush hour, but with keyless unlocking and front/rear parking cameras, all practical features are included. Spending over 90,000 MYR on a tough and capable 'buddy' like this? Totally worth it!

I've been driving a Isuzu pickup for four years, it's truly durable! The diesel engine is powerful, it doesn't slip when climbing hills during the rainy season, and the rear seat comfortably fits three people. The manual transmission makes my foot a bit sore in traffic jams, but at this price, with front and rear radar and keyless entry, what more could you ask for?

Previously, the Japanese sedan I drove would get stuck in the muddy roads during the monsoon season in East Malaysia. After switching to the D-MAX 2.5MT 4x4, I finally feel at ease—last week, during a site visit on a muddy road in Sandakan, Sabah, engaging the low-speed 4WD made it feel as stable as a tank. The diesel torque kicks in as early as 1800 RPM, so climbing slopes doesn’t require revving. During the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, although manual transmission can be tiring, the fuel consumption is only 8L/100km, which is 2L/100km less compared to my friend’s Ranger. Safety gets a 5 because ABS and vehicle stability saved me once during heavy rain on the highway. The exterior is boxy and lacks some design flair, so minus 1 point. A small drawback is the halogen headlights being too dim, making it necessary to switch to LEDs for night driving; also, the rear air conditioning only has vents but no independent controls. However, for carrying cargo and five passengers on long trips, the 3095mm wheelbase makes it spacious, and the 60:40 rear seats can even fit a surfboard. For using a pickup truck in Malaysia, the D-MAX is truly practical.

Driven the Isuzu D-MAX manual 4WD diesel for four years, the power is sufficient, stable for climbing and overtaking. The interior is simple and durable, the rear seats are spacious enough for three people, and the rear bed is convenient for carrying goods and equipment. However, it lacks a couple of airbags, and it feels slightly big for city driving. But for long trips or weekend outings to the suburbs, this old mate is very reliable.

The power of this manual transmission is really strong! One push of the throttle and it surges uphill and over potholes, way better than my previous sedan!
