The B-segment hatchback market has always been a popular choice among family users and young drivers locally. This type of vehicle needs to strike a precise balance between space, fuel efficiency, and price. When the 2018 Mazda 2 Hatchback 1.5 GVC mid-tier version was launched, it drew considerable attention with Mazda's GVC (G-Vectoring Control) system as its core selling point—this system is said to enhance cornering stability while also ensuring daily driving comfort. This time, we got our hands on the actual vehicle, mainly to verify whether its dynamic performance is as outstanding as advertised, and whether its static features meet mainstream expectations for this class.

From the exterior, this Mazda 2 continues the brand's iconic "KODO - Soul of Motion" design language, with smooth overall lines and no excessive, complicated decorations. The front features a shield-shaped grille paired with chrome accents, offering high recognition; the sharp-shaped halogen headlights on both sides are connected to the grille design, making the front appear wider. Along the side of the car, a waistline runs from the front to the rear, complemented by 185/65 R15 tires, achieving a well-proportioned look. At the rear, the taillights adopt a horizontal layout, with internal light strips providing good recognition when illuminated at night, while the black plastic skid plate below the rear bumper adds a touch of sportiness. Overall, the exterior has an enduring appeal and aligns with most people's aesthetic preferences.

Inside, the interior layout is simple and clear, with the center console tilted towards the driver for convenient operation. In terms of materials, the upper part of the dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, which feel decent, while the lower part consists of hard plastic; however, the craftsmanship is quite solid, with no noticeable gaps. The multifunctional steering wheel is wrapped in leather, offering a comfortable grip; the left side has buttons for volume adjustment and phone answering, while the right side features controls for the trip computer. The instrument cluster uses a traditional needle-based design, with a monochrome display in the center to show basic information such as fuel consumption and mileage; the HUD (head-up display) is a highlight of the mid-tier version, projecting data like speed and navigation to reduce the need to look down while driving. Although the central touchscreen is not large, it supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making it convenient to use when connected to a smartphone. The seats are made of fabric material, with manually adjustable front seats offering decent support for the backrest and cushion, making long drives comfortable. The rear seats are equipped with three headrests and can be folded in a 60:40 split, providing expanded trunk space for storing larger items without issue.

In terms of space, the vehicle measures 4060mm in length, 1695mm in width, and 1470mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2570mm, making it average within its segment. The front row offers ample space, providing about a fist's worth of headroom for a 175cm tall driver after adjusting the seat. The rear space is just enough for adults, with around two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, ensuring it doesn't feel too cramped for longer rides. Regarding storage space, the front door panels can hold two water bottles, and there is a storage compartment under the center console suitable for placing a phone. The rear door panels also feature storage slots, while the central armrest box offers limited space, suitable for small items. The trunk has a standard capacity of 220 liters, which is sufficient for daily grocery shopping or storing a suitcase. When the rear seats are folded down, the space can be expanded significantly, offering good practicality.

Powertrain-wise, it is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 116PS and a peak torque of 148N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, starting feels rather brisk, with linear throttle response and smooth gear changes, without noticeable jolts. When driving on city streets, keeping the RPM around 2000 is sufficient to provide enough power. During overtaking, pressing the throttle deeply prompts the transmission to downshift promptly, offering direct power delivery. The GVC system indeed plays its part, as body roll is well controlled during cornering. The steering is precise in direction, with moderate return force, giving the driver ample confidence. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, tuned towards comfort. It can filter out most minor road surface bumps, and when crossing speed bumps, the suspension rebounds quickly without any excessive oscillation.

In specific tests, we focused on fuel consumption performance. In urban congested conditions, the fuel consumption is about 6.2L per 100km; on highways, it drops to 4.8L, with an average combined fuel consumption of approximately 5.1L, which aligns closely with official figures, showcasing decent fuel economy. Regarding braking performance, the brake pedal feels linear in response, with stable braking force output. During emergency braking, the vehicle remains well-composed without significant nose-dive behavior. As for noise control, wind and tire noise become relatively noticeable at high speeds, but they remain within acceptable levels and do not affect normal conversations among passengers.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2018 Mazda 2 Hatchback 1.5 GVC mid-range model lie in its balanced dynamic performance and practical configurations. Compared to its class rival, the Toyota YARiS, its GVC system offers better handling; while compared to the Honda Fit, it has a superior interior build quality and comfort-oriented configurations. This car is ideal for families who value driving quality and fuel efficiency, or young drivers who have just started working—it can meet daily commuting needs while also accommodating short family trips on weekends.

In summary, the 2018 Mazda 2 Hatchback 1.5 GVC mid-range model is a well-rounded car without obvious shortcomings. Its dynamic performance is excellent, configurations are practical, and fuel economy is efficient. It is a compelling choice in the B-segment hatchback market.

Pros
Practical and reliable active braking and other safety features effectively prevent collision risks
With GVC system support, strong stability for cornering and high-speed lane changes, smooth commuting and overtaking
Fuel consumption as low as 5.1L/100km, strong range, and high cost-effectiveness
Cons
The rear space is cramped, making it uncomfortable for three adults to sit and affecting the riding experience.
The trunk volume is small (220L), lacking sufficient storage capacity for long-distance or multi-person travel.
The 15-inch wheels make the car look less imposing, and its appearance is not outstanding among modified cars.

Last Wednesday after work, I encountered heavy rain. There was a traffic jam at the LDP highway entrance, and the car in front suddenly braked hard—Mazda's automatic braking system made a "beep" and displayed a warning. Before I could react, it stopped the car for me within half a meter, which gave me quite a scare! This safety feature is definitely not just for show, totally deserves a 5/5 rating. However, as for the appearance, the KODO design is appealing over time, but the 15-inch rims on a small body seem a bit underwhelming among a sea of modified cars in KL, so I'll give a fair 4/5. The rear seat feels cramped with three colleagues, and the 220L trunk gets full with just two carry-on suitcases. It's good enough for grocery shopping or picking up kids, but you’ll need to carefully plan for long road trips.

After driving the small Mazda 2 for over three years, it's really stable during traffic jams with GVC, and the 1.5L engine is powerful enough for overtaking. However, the rear seats can be a bit cramped with three big guys, and the trunk can just fit two carry-on suitcases. The safety features are very comprehensive, and the rain-sensing wipers are super convenient on rainy days. The fuel consumption is 5.1L/100km, and a full tank lasts for a week—great value for money!

This Mazda 2 has been driven for a few years and still feels smooth! No pressure maneuvering through city alleys and parking; stepping on the accelerator while overtaking feels responsive, with a fuel consumption of 5.1L, it’s very economical. The rear row might feel a bit cramped with three big guys sitting, but for daily commuting and family use, it’s enough. With the GVC system, cornering is super stable—worth every penny!

The Myvi I previously owned was fuel-efficient but unstable at high speeds. Switching to the Mazda 2 turned out to be the right choice! With GVC support, it’s steady even when changing lanes quickly on the LDP highway during the morning rush hour. The 1.5L NA engine paired with the AT gearbox handles Kuala Lumpur traffic jams smoothly. The interior is truly surprising; the HUD makes navigation super convenient, and the keyless entry plus front and rear sensors are lifesavers when looking for parking near the Twin Towers. However, there are only two airbags, which makes me a bit worried about having kids in the back seat. The spare tire isn’t full-sized, so I need to be extra careful about punctures when driving on the East Coast Highway. On weekends, I take my family to Genting; the hill-start assist performs well without failing. However, the 220L trunk feels a bit cramped when loading three cabin-sized suitcases. Overall, spending about RM70k for an easy-to-drive and high-quality B-segment car is worth it!
