In Malaysia's B-segment hatchback market, the Perodua Myvi has always been an unavoidable choice for consumers – after all, it has consistently topped the sales charts for years thanks to its precise focus on meeting family users' needs for practicality, reliability, and value for money. This time, we test-drove the 2018 Myvi 1.5 H AT, a mid- to high-spec version after the mid-cycle refresh. Not only does it retain the core advantages of being a "national car," but it has also upgraded its safety features. Our test drive had a simple objective: to see if it still deserves the label of "the first choice for a family car" and whether the combination of the 1.5L engine and AT gearbox is smooth enough for daily driving.

Looking at the exterior, the design of the 2018 Myvi is more youthful compared to the previous model. The front features a large trapezoidal lower grille paired with sharp LED headlights on either side, giving it high recognizability. The body side has smooth lines, with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, making the body appear longer. The 15-inch multi-spoke wheels may not be large, but they are well-proportioned to the body. The rear design is relatively simple, with horizontally laid out LED taillights that look great when lit up. The bottom of the rear bumper has added a black plastic trim, adding a slight touch of sportiness. Overall, the design is not overly aggressive; it is pleasing to look at and aligns with the aesthetic preferences of most family users.

Stepping inside, the interior layout is very well-organized, with the center console tilted towards the driver for easy operation. In terms of materials, although most surfaces are hard plastic, the workmanship is solid, and there’s no noticeable looseness. The multi-function steering wheel is wrapped in leather and feels comfortable in hand, with integrated buttons for volume control, phone answering, and other functions, making it convenient for daily use. The dashboard features illuminated analog-style dials that display information like RPM, speed, and fuel level clearly. While the central control screen isn't touch-enabled, it comes with physical buttons and knobs, making its operation intuitive and user-friendly, especially for those who don’t like overly complex tech configurations. As for features, the 1.5 H AT version is well-equipped: keyless entry and start, six airbags, front and rear parking sensors, LED automatic headlights, and electrically foldable side mirrors are all included. Particularly noteworthy are the six airbags, which stand out in this price segment as safety features are especially important for family users.

Space is one of Myvi’s strong points. Its wheelbase reaches 2500mm, providing ample space in the front row; a passenger who is 175cm tall still has a fist-width of headroom remaining when seated. The rear space is also decent—passengers of the same height can enjoy about two fists of legroom and four fingers of headroom without feeling cramped. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-fold, which expands the trunk capacity from 277L to an even larger space, easily accommodating a stroller or suitcase. In terms of storage, there are cupholders on the front and rear door panels, as well as a storage compartment below the center console for phones or wallets, which is very practical. Additionally, the rear row is equipped with air-conditioning vents and a 220V power outlet—a thoughtful feature for families traveling with children, as it can be used to charge tablets or small appliances.

Dynamic driving part: The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine has a maximum power of 103PS and a maximum torque of 136N·m, paired with a 4AT gearbox. The power response is relatively quick when starting; for daily city driving, you can feel the power output as soon as you press the accelerator, and it doesn’t feel sluggish. During acceleration, the gear shifting of the transmission is fairly smooth, but there is a slight delay during sudden acceleration, which is understandable given the 4AT transmission. However, this powertrain is more than sufficient for urban commuting or highway cruising, and as long as you give gas in advance while overtaking, the power can keep up. In terms of handling, the Myvi’s steering wheel is precise with minimal slack, making it very agile in daily driving as well as parking. The suspension setup comprises a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, which is tuned for comfort. It absorbs most vibrations when passing through speed bumps or bumpy roads, so it doesn’t feel overly jarring. The body roll is not too obvious when cornering, and the stability is pretty good, making it suitable for daily family use.

As for fuel consumption, we test-drove the car for a week, mainly in the city and on highways. The combined fuel consumption was about 6.5L/100km, which is slightly different from the official figure of 5L/100km. However, considering city traffic congestion, this fuel economy is still acceptable. After all, for a 1.5L engine, the consumption is not high. In terms of noise control, the Myvi performs decently. The cabin remains relatively quiet during low-speed city driving, but wind noise and road noise become more noticeable at high speeds. However, it stays within an acceptable range. The seats are quite comfortable, providing good support and cushioning, so even long drives don’t feel tiring.

In conclusion, the 2018 Perodua Myvi 1.5 H AT has clear core advantages: practical space, rich features, economical fuel consumption, and adequate safety configurations, offering great value for money. Compared to competitors in the same segment like the Honda Jazz, the Myvi is cheaper and has more features. Compared to the Toyota Vios, it offers more interior space, making it better suited for family use. Its target audience is quite clear: family users who prioritize practicality and safety, especially those looking for a reliable vehicle on a budget of around RM50,000. If you're a family user seeking a car with ample space, sufficient features, and good fuel economy, the Myvi 1.5 H AT is definitely worth considering. While it may not have particularly stunning design or powerful performance, its balanced attributes can meet most family needs. This is also why it has earned its title as the 'national car.'

Pros
Rich safety configuration, standard 6 airbags, body stability control, and ABS, stable braking on slippery roads
Practical interior layout, clear central console, convenient air conditioning knobs, large multifunction steering wheel buttons easy for blind operation
Flexible space, rear seats fold down 60:40, ample cargo or luggage space
Cons
The interior has a strong plastic feel, with the center console and door panels mostly made of hard plastic, offering an average texture.
High-speed performance is somewhat soft, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine requires deep acceleration for overtaking, and the power is insufficient when climbing hills with a full load.
No reversing camera, which may be inconvenient for novice parking.

Owner of 2018 Perodua Myvi 1.5 H AT
As the owner of a 2018 Perodua Myvi 1.5 H AT, having driven it for nearly five years, what satisfies me the most is the safety features — they truly deserve a full score! Malaysia experiences frequent rainy weather, and unexpected water accumulation or sudden braking on highways are common. With its standard 6 airbags (including front and rear side airbags and curtain airbags), vehicle stability control, and ABS, there was one time on the North-South Expressway when I had to avoid a truck that suddenly changed lanes. After steering sharply, the car remained steady and braked firmly — it truly saved my life. When I usually take my family to the east coast for trips, the ISO FIX anchors make it convenient to install the child car seat, giving me much more peace of mind. I give the interior a 4-star rating mainly because it feels a bit plasticky — the center console and door panels are all made of hard plastic to the touch. However, the design is quite practical — the layout of the center console is clear, the air conditioning knobs are easy to turn, and the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel are large enough that, even when I drive with gloves on, it’s not easy to press the wrong button while operating blindly. Also, the keyless entry and start system make it so much more convenient to get in and out of the car without needing to dig for keys when stuck in KL traffic. While the texture isn’t exceptional, its durability is pretty good. After all these years, there hasn’t been any rattling sound. As a daily commuter car, it’s more than sufficient.

As the owner of the 2018 Perodua Myvi 1.5 H AT, after driving it in Malaysia for almost five years, the overall experience feels really satisfying! First, regarding performance, I’ll give it 4 out of 5 because it's sufficient for daily use but feels a bit "soft" on highways — in Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams, it accelerates smoothly, and the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine handles 80-90km/h cruising on the LDP highway without issues. However, overtaking requires pressing the pedal harder to rev up, unlike a turbo car that's more aggressive. That said, considering its positioning, this performance is already very decent. I'll give full marks for the interior! Although the seats are manually adjustable, the fabric material is not stuffy in Malaysia's hot weather; the dashboard layout is super convenient, the air conditioning knobs feel smooth, and it even has a 220V power outlet. Occasionally charging a phone in the backseat is super convenient. The most surprising feature is the 60:40 split-folding rear seats! Whether it's a weekend trip to Klang Valley to buy durians or carrying family luggage, the space is absolutely sufficient. Safety and exterior design definitely get 5 points! With Malaysia's frequent rainy days, ABS and the vehicle stability control system saved me once during an emergency brake on the slippery Federal Highway; it has six airbags + front and rear sensors, giving great peace of mind when traveling with kids. The exterior design is timeless, with LED headlights offering high visibility during the day, and its rounded body makes parking in narrow lanes in Malacca particularly easy. Every time I park in front of a coffee shop, someone asks if this is the latest Myvi model~ Overall, as a family car, it truly feels "down to earth" on Malaysian roads, making it a fantastic value-for-money choice!

As the owner of the 2018 Perodua Myvi 1.5 H AT, having driven it for almost five years, I truly feel that this car is perfect for Malaysia! The exterior gets a 4 out of 5. Mainly because the front design is a bit rounded, making it look less edgy compared to the newer models, but overall, it's still pleasing to the eye. Especially the LED headlights, which are very bright in the misty rain of Kuala Lumpur evenings, giving it a high level of recognition. Performance deserves a 5 out of 5! The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine handles uphill climbs on Penang's hilly roads effortlessly. When you step on the accelerator, the response is quick, and the transmission shifts very smoothly. When stuck in KL traffic, the power delivery is very linear without any jerking. The fuel consumption is also impressive, averaging around 5.2L/100km, which is even slightly lower than the official numbers. This is particularly satisfying given the current spike in fuel prices. The interior also gets a 5 out of 5. Although the seats are manually adjustable, they are very supportive and comfortable even for long periods of time. The layout of the center console is very reasonable, and the multi-functional steering wheel is very user-friendly. Features like keyless entry and start are especially convenient when carrying large bags of groceries from the supermarket. With the 60:40 foldable rear seats, you can easily load large items occasionally, making excellent use of the space. Additionally, the interior materials are solid and durable. After five years, there are almost no rattling sounds, which is much better compared to the local car I owned previously! Overall, this car performs exceptionally well on Malaysian roads. Whether it's for city commuting or weekend getaways, it handles it perfectly and offers exceptional value for money!

As the owner of a 2018 Perodua Myvi 1.5 H AT, having driven it in Malaysia for nearly five years, let me talk about its performance first. Commuting in Kuala Lumpur city, traffic jams during peak hours are very common. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine doesn't have a particularly strong start, but if you press the accelerator a bit harder, the power can keep up, and it performs adequately for overtaking as long as you accelerate in advance. It's perfectly sufficient for urban roads. On weekends, when taking family to Genting or Penang and driving on highways, the engine revs up to around 6000 rpm, and with 103 horsepower, it runs steadily at about 110-120 km/h without feeling unstable. However, when climbing hills with five people onboard, the power feels somewhat insufficient, requiring a downshift and additional acceleration. Overall, giving the performance a score of 4 seems fair. Let's talk about safety. This car comes standard with 6 airbags, ABS, and vehicle stability control. During a sudden stop in rainy conditions on the LDP highway, the car didn't skid and came to a stable stop—I was truly grateful for those features at that moment. When parking at shopping malls or residential areas, the front and rear parking sensors are incredibly helpful, especially in Malaysia's narrow parking spaces, avoiding many scratches. However, the downside is the lack of a rearview camera, which might require some getting used to for beginners, but experienced drivers wouldn't find it much of an issue. Overall, the safety features are quite thoughtful for cars in the same price range, and giving it a score of 4 is well-deserved.

As the owner of a 2018 Myvi 1.5 H AT, the thing that has given me the most peace of mind driving in Malaysia over the years is its safety features! The 6 airbags and vehicle stability control come as standard. Last time, on the LDP highway in KL, when a car suddenly changed lanes, the ABS reacted really quickly when I hit the brakes, bringing the car to a stable stop. For people like us who drive on highways and congested city streets frequently, the sense of security is incredibly satisfying. A solid 5 out of 5, no doubt about it! As for the appearance, I still think it looks great even now! The LED headlights are especially bright on the dark roads of Jalan Tun Razak at night, and the body lines are smoother compared to the older models. When parked downstairs at the apartment blocks, the neighbors often ask me if it’s a new car. The classic Myvi design really fits the aesthetic preferences of Malaysians, so another solid 5 out of 5! In terms of performance, the 1.5L NA engine is more than adequate for city driving, especially navigating the narrow streets of George Town in Penang, as the throttle response is quite agile. However, when driving on the East Coast Highway above 120km/h, the acceleration feels a bit sluggish. And when carrying a full load of family members up to the mid-hill of Genting, you really need to step on the gas pedal hard to climb. But considering its price and positioning, it’s perfectly fine for daily driving. I’d say 4 out of 5 is reasonable! Overall, this Myvi is truly practical for the road conditions in Malaysia. There’s nothing to fault about its safety features and design. While its performance isn’t particularly strong, it’s reliable, which makes it an excellent choice as a family car!
