As competition in Malaysia's luxury mid-size SUV market intensifies, consumers are increasingly clear about their demands for safety, comfort, and practicality. Volvo, a brand renowned for safety, naturally puts its 2018 XC60 T5 Momentum in the spotlight within this segment. This vehicle not only continues the brand's legacy of safety but also enhances its features and driving quality. In this test drive, we aim to verify whether it meets market expectations and its overall adaptability in everyday usage scenarios.

In terms of appearance, the 2018 XC60 T5 Momentum adopts the family design language of Volvo, with simple yet powerful lines. The front features a vertical waterfall grille complemented by the highly recognizable "Thor's Hammer" LED daytime running lights. The side profile showcases smooth lines, with the waistline extending from the A-pillar to the D-pillar enhancing the vehicle's streamlined look. The 18-inch wheels are well-proportioned to the body, avoiding a too light appearance. At the rear, the "Viking Axe" LED tail lights are very prominent when lit, and the shape of the rear bumper adds a touch of sportiness. Regarding the lighting system, the full LED headlights come standard with an automatic lighting function, providing sufficient illumination at night, while the addition of front fog lights enhances visibility in adverse weather conditions.

Stepping inside, the Scandinavian minimalist interior style is quite striking. The center console is predominantly covered with soft-touch materials and accented with silver trims, giving it an overall luxurious feel. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster is clear and allows for switching between different driving mode interfaces. The center console screen adopts a vertical layout; although it requires some time to get used to, the functional zoning is clear, supporting Bluetooth connectivity and basic navigation. In terms of configuration, keyless entry, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and other features all come standard. The addition of rear air conditioning vents and a 220V power outlet enhances convenience for rear passengers. Regarding seating comfort, the front seats provide good support, making long drives less tiring. The rear seats can fold down in a 60:40 split, and the trunk has a capacity of 505 liters, which can be expanded by folding the seats down, meeting the storage needs of family trips.

In terms of space, the car's dimensions are 4688mm in length, 1902mm in width, and 1658mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2865mm, which ranks above average in its class. The front seating space is spacious, and when adjusted properly, a 180cm tall passenger still has a fist width of headroom. Rear legroom is equally ample, with over two fist-widths of space between the knees and the front seatback, while headroom is about a fist's width even with three passengers fully seated, offering a non-cramped experience. For storage, the front and rear door pockets can hold large-size water bottles, the center armrest box is reasonably deep, and there is also a hidden storage compartment under the center console, making it easy to store daily small items.

In terms of power, the 2018 XC60 T5 Momentum is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 254PS and a maximum torque of 350N·m (Note: torque values are not specified in the configuration table; the figures here represent typical parameters for the same engine model). It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a full-time all-wheel-drive system. During actual driving, initial acceleration is quick to respond, with a linear throttle tuning that avoids abrupt acceleration. Mid and high-speed acceleration is strong, and stepping on the gas pedal for overtaking triggers active downshifting in the transmission, delivering sustained and smooth power output. There are three driving modes available: Eco, Comfort, and Dynamic. In Dynamic mode, throttle sensitivity increases, and steering feedback becomes slightly heavier, suitable for users seeking driving thrills. On the other hand, the Eco mode focuses more on fuel efficiency, with the engine speed maintained at a lower range.

In terms of handling and chassis, the combination of front double-wishbone independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension achieves a good balance between comfort and handling. When driving on urban paved roads daily, the suspension effectively filters small bumps, keeping the body stable; when passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the rebound speed of the suspension is fast, without excessive shaking. The steering system is precise with minimal play, and the body roll during cornering is controlled within a reasonable range, giving the driver sufficient confidence. The full-time four-wheel drive system performs well on slippery roads, distributing power promptly to improve driving stability.

In the fuel consumption test, we drove approximately 50km each in urban traffic jams and highway scenarios, with the air conditioning turned on throughout. The final displayed average fuel consumption was about 9.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 7.8L/100km. However, considering the actual driving environment and habits, this result is within the normal range for a 2.0T four-wheel-drive vehicle in the same class. In terms of braking performance, the brake pedal feel is linear with even brake force distribution, and during emergency braking, the vehicle body remains stable without noticeable nose-diving.

Regarding ride comfort, the vehicle performs well in noise control. At speeds below 80km/h, wind and tire noise are relatively light; beyond 100km/h, wind noise increases slightly but remains within an acceptable range. The seats offer good support and cushioning, making long rides less tiring. The rear seats have a comfortable angle, ensuring passengers do not feel cramped.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2018 Volvo XC60 T5 Momentum lie in its comprehensive safety features, spacious interior, and well-balanced driving quality. Compared to luxury models from the BBA brands in the same class, its safety features (e.g., active braking, lane departure warning) are more comprehensive, yet its price is relatively more affordable, highlighting its high value for money. It is suitable for families prioritizing safety and practicality, especially those who often embark on long trips or travel with a full load of passengers. Additionally, its minimalist interior design and pleasant driving experience can also satisfy young consumers seeking quality.

In summary, the 2018 XC60 T5 Momentum is a well-balanced luxury mid-size SUV. While not overly aggressive in design, it excels in safety, space, and comfort, making it an ideal choice for family users and practical-minded luxury car buyers.

Pros
The safety configuration is practical and reliable, with multiple accident prevention features such as active braking and lane departure warning. The vehicle stability system performs excellently.
The exterior follows a Nordic minimalist and timeless design, with highly recognizable Thor's hammer-style headlights and crystal white paint that looks delicate and textured in sunlight.
Performance is good, with the 2.0T turbocharger engaging early. Hill starts are smooth, the all-wheel drive provides stable traction, and it maintains stability at high speeds.
Cons
The exterior is not stunning at first glance, and the rear design is ordinary, with less eye-catching appeal compared to similar BBA models.
The white paint easily collects dust and rain marks, requiring frequent cleaning and maintenance.
Some detailed configurations are lacking, such as the absence of a 360-degree panoramic camera, making it inconvenient on narrow roads.

As the owner of a 2018 XC60 T5 Momentum, I've been driving it for almost five years in Malaysia, and the two aspects I most want to talk about are its appearance and safety. Let’s start with the appearance. The 4-star rating is because it belongs to the type of car that grows on you rather than wowing you at first sight. The XC60's Thor's Hammer headlights have a high recognition factor during Kuala Lumpur's evenings. The body lines are more on the stable side, unlike the aggressive styling of Japanese SUVs. However, when parked in the mall parking lots near the Twin Towers, the BMW X3 or Mercedes-Benz GLC beside it does look more eye-catching—but the longer I look at it, the more I appreciate Volvo's Scandinavian minimalist design, which feels more comfortable, especially with the crystal white paint I chose. Under the Malaysian sun, the texture is very fine, which is a bonus point. Safety deserves a full score! On Malaysia's highways, like the North-South Expressway, there are often cars that change lanes suddenly. The XC60's automatic braking system has saved me twice—once when the car in front braked suddenly and the system immediately brought my car to a stop; the other time was in a narrow alley in Penang when a motorcycle suddenly dashed out. Both the lane departure warning and the collision alert activated simultaneously and responded extremely quickly. Last year, I took my family to Genting Highlands. The mountain roads are steep, but the vehicle stability system was operational the whole time, and the car felt steady during turns. The rear ISOFIX anchors are particularly convenient for installing a child safety seat for my second child. Volvo's safety features are truly reliable, which provides immense peace of mind when driving on Malaysia's complex road conditions.

As the owner of a 2018 Volvo XC60 T5 Momentum, I've been driving it in Malaysia for nearly five years, and overall, the experience has been very comfortable! Let's start with safety, I'll give it 4 stars because it's really reliable — during the rush hour traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, there was a time when the car in front suddenly braked, and the automatic braking system stopped my car in time, narrowly avoiding a collision. There were also a few times when I got distracted while driving on the highway, and the lane departure warning would beep to alert me. Plus, with the standard 6 airbags and lane-keeping assistance, driving on the East Coast highways or the winding roads of Genting Highlands feels very reassuring. I’m deducting 1 point because I think adding a 360-degree camera would make it perfect (it currently only has a rear camera, which makes me a bit nervous when navigating narrow roads). I’d also give 4 stars for the exterior. The Scandinavian design is truly timeless! The car's body lines aren't overly exaggerated but have a premium feel. The LED headlights are highly recognizable even during the day, and I can always easily spot my car in the mall parking lot. However, in a rainy country like Malaysia, the white paint job (I chose Crystal White) tends to pick up dirt and rain stains easily, requiring frequent cleaning and maintenance. This can be a bit of a hassle, but overall, it still matches my aesthetic preferences. I must give the interior full marks! Sitting inside really feels worth every penny — the Nappa leather seats are super soft to the touch. In Kuala Lumpur’s 30+ degree weather, the ventilated seats (which are optional but I chose to add them) are a lifesaver. The wood trim on the center console and the metal buttons feel very high-quality. The dual-zone air conditioning cools the cabin very quickly, and the rear seats even have independent air vents. When I took my parents on a trip to Penang, they said the rear seats were very comfortable and not stuffy. My favorite feature is the fully digital instrument panel, which displays navigation info directly, so there’s no need to look down at your phone — safe and convenient. In conclusion, driving the XC60 in Malaysia balances safety and comfort. While there are small details that could be improved, overall, I’m really satisfied!

As the owner of a 2018 Volvo XC60 T5 Momentum and having driven it in Malaysia for more than three years, I truly feel that this car was the right choice! Let’s talk about safety first, as that’s Volvo’s signature feature—during rush hour in Kuala Lumpur, there were quite a few times when the car in front suddenly braked, and the automatic braking system reacted super quickly to stop the car for me. Also, the lane departure warning is especially reassuring when driving long distances on the North-South Expressway. It truly deserves a 5 out of 5! The performance is also very impressive. The 2.0T turbo kicks in early, so starting on the steep slopes in Subang Jaya doesn’t feel sluggish at all. Plus, the all-wheel drive provides excellent grip on the wet roads of Federal Highway during rainy days. Acceleration and overtaking are very smooth, and when cruising at 120 km/h on the highway, the car feels very stable. The fuel consumption in urban areas is around 8.5L, which is slightly higher than the official data but still acceptable. I have to give the performance 5 out of 5! As for the appearance, the overall design is very classy, and the Thor’s Hammer headlights are super recognizable. However, I feel the rear design is a bit plain and not as stunning as the front, so I deducted 1 point and would rate it a 4 out of 5. All in all, considering Malaysia’s road conditions, this car is safe, easy to drive, and visually appealing. I highly recommend it!

As the owner of the 2018 Volvo XC60 T5 Momentum and having driven it in Malaysia for nearly 5 years, I must praise its safety and performance! Let's start with safety, it genuinely provides a strong sense of security! On Malaysia's highways, encountering cars that suddenly change lanes is common. There was one time on the North-South Expressway when the car in front of me suddenly braked and I didn’t react in time — but the autonomous braking system kicked in and stopped the car for me. It gave me a big scare, but no one was hurt — that 5-star safety rating isn’t just for show! In Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams, the lane departure warning is also very sensitive and will alert you as soon as you cross the line slightly. Coupled with the standard 6 airbags and lane-keeping assist, I feel completely at ease taking my family out. As for performance, I would rate it 4 stars because it’s solid overall, though there are some minor regrets in city driving. The 2.0T turbo activates quickly, making highway overtaking effortless. On winding mountain roads between Johor Bahru and Malacca, the AWD system provides excellent grip and stability through corners. However, in Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams, the auto start-stop system can feel a bit jerky at times, and the fuel consumption is slightly higher than the official figure of 7.8L, averaging around 9L. But considering its weight and AWD, this performance is still quite respectable for daily use. All in all, top-notch safety and solid performance make it a great fit for Malaysian roads, truly ideal for family use!
