The competition in the mid-size luxury SUV market in 2018 was not exactly mild. The classic models from BBA have long dominated the mainstream, but many consumers have been looking forward to a model that ensures luxury quality while excelling in safety features—Volvo XC60 T8 Inscription happens to meet these requirements. Not only does it maximize Volvo's signature safety features, but it also achieves a balance between power and fuel efficiency through the plug-in hybrid system. Priced at over 330,000 ringgit, it is also quite sincere among luxury SUVs in the same segment. In this test drive, I want to focus on whether its actual performance is sufficient, how practical its safety features are, and how well it performs as a family car in terms of space and comfort.

Looking at the exterior, the design of the XC60 T8 Inscription continues the Nordic style of the Volvo family, with simple yet engaging overall lines. The vertical waterfall front grille combined with the "Thor's Hammer" LED daytime running lights is highly recognizable, making it stand out even in traffic. The waistline on the side of the body extends from the front to the rear, complemented by 19-inch multi-spoke wheels that add a sense of steadiness and sophistication. The rear "Viking Axe" tail lights are a signature design of Volvo, very striking when lit up. Moreover, the lines of the rear bumper are rounded, lacking the overly rugged off-road feel, which aligns it more with the positioning of a city luxury SUV. In terms of lighting systems, LED headlamps, daytime running lights, and front and rear fog lights are standard features. The addition of automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers enhances daily convenience.

Sitting inside, the interior exhibits a strong Nordic minimalist style, without too many flashy designs, yet the materials and quality are on point. The center console is wrapped in a large area of soft materials, complemented by wooden trim panels, achieving a good balance of luxury. The 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and the 9-inch vertical center console screen are the core of the interior. The central display supports touch operations, has a clear interface logic, and is easy to use. The HUD head-up display is standard, allowing you to see information such as speed and navigation without looking down while driving, which is very practical. In terms of features, dual-zone automatic climate control, independent rear air conditioning, power-adjustable front seats, split-folding rear seats (with one-touch electric folding) are all available. The 220V power outlet and keyless entry/start are also very user-friendly. When it comes to space, the 2865mm wheelbase is quite decent. After adjusting the front seats to a suitable position, the rear legroom allows for about two fist-widths of space, and seating three adults won't feel cramped. The trunk capacity is 505L, which is sufficient for daily needs such as baby strollers and suitcases. Folding down the rear seats expands the space, making it suitable for larger items as well.

In terms of performance, the XC60 T8 Inscription is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine combined with an electric motor plug-in hybrid system, delivering a combined maximum horsepower of 407PS and an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.2 seconds. In actual driving, the torque output of the electric motor is very direct during starts. A light press on the accelerator provides a noticeable push-back sensation. When overtaking and pressing harder on the accelerator, the engine and motor work together to deliver ample power reserves, making it effortless to accelerate even on highways. It offers multiple driving modes, including pure electric, hybrid, and sporty modes. Under pure electric mode, it can run approximately 50 kilometers, sufficient for daily commuting without consuming fuel. In hybrid mode, the engine and motor intelligently switch, effectively managing fuel consumption. The official combined fuel consumption is 2.1L/100km, and in actual use, city traffic conditions consume around 5L, while highway conditions can reduce it to just over 3L. This fuel efficiency is outstanding for a mid-size SUV.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel has moderate steering effort, precise pointing, and no play, making it very handy to drive. The chassis adopts an independent suspension with a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link setup, tuned for comfort yet not without resilience. When going over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension filters out vibrations well, leaving no significant jolts. When cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, providing excellent stability. The addition of the all-wheel-drive system enhances traction on rainy or slippery roads, making driving more confident. As for braking, the response is very linear, delivering a sense of safety with how much you press.

In terms of driving comfort, the performance of the XC60 T8 Inscription is commendable as well. The sound insulation is excellent; at speeds below 80km/h, there is almost no noticeable wind or tire noise. On highways, tire noise becomes slightly more pronounced but remains within an acceptable range. The seats offer good wrapping and support, ensuring you don't feel tired during long drives. The energy recovery system has multiple intensity settings, and when set to the lowest, the driving experience is almost the same as that of a fuel vehicle, with no significant dragging sensation.

To summarize, the core highlights of the 2018 Volvo XC60 T8 Inscription are clear: top-notch safety features (360-degree surround-view camera, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, etc. are all standard), strong performance with low fuel consumption, luxurious interior quality, and practical space. Compared to the same-class BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, it boasts more comprehensive safety features, a fuel-saving advantage with its plug-in hybrid system, and a more competitive price. If you are a family user focusing on safety and seeking a balance between performance and fuel efficiency, or if you desire a luxurious and well-equipped city SUV, the XC60 T8 Inscription is a great choice. Overall, it is a well-rounded mid-size luxury SUV that can meet daily family needs while occasionally letting you enjoy some speed and excitement.

Pros
Active safety features are practical, lane keeping and active braking intervene in time to avoid accidents, providing overall peace of mind
T8 hybrid power performs well, pure electric mode is suitable for urban congestion, hybrid mode offers swift highway overtaking, with low overall fuel consumption
Interior quality feels premium, Nappa leather seats are comfortable, seat ventilation is practical, rear space is spacious, and air conditioning configuration is thoughtful
Cons
The active safety system occasionally misjudges roadside pillars during low-speed following, causing minor sensitivity issues.
The pure electric range is relatively short, only about 50 kilometers, requiring reliance on hybrid mode for long-distance driving.
Acceleration becomes slightly weak when exceeding 120km/h on highways.

As the owner of a 2018 XC60 T8 Inscription, driving in Malaysia for nearly five years, I really want to share a few points! I’d rate the safety aspect 4/5, mainly because Volvo's active safety features are incredibly practical on local roads—whether it’s on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur with sudden lane-cutting motorbikes, or an MPV braking hard on the Subang Jaya highway, lane-keeping and automatic braking always intervene in time. There was one time I almost rear-ended the car in front, and the system started "beeping" and stopped my car! However, the downside is that the system can sometimes mistakenly identify roadside posts at low speeds as obstacles, which is a little too sensitive. But overall, it still gives a great sense of security. I also give the performance 4/5. The hybrid power of the T8 is amazing in Malaysia—in traffic jams it’s all electric mode, and for highways like the one from Ipoh to Penang, switching to hybrid mode makes overtaking brisk with its 5.2-second acceleration! The all-wheel drive ensures stability even on the winding roads up to Genting Highlands, without any slipping. However, the pure electric range is about 50 kilometers, which is just enough for my commute from KLCC to Puchong, but for long trips, the hybrid mode is still needed. That said, the combined fuel consumption of 2.1L is impressively efficient, much better than my friend's 2.0T SUV. The interior deserves a full 5/5! The Nappa leather seats feel super comfortable, and even in Kuala Lumpur’s 35-degree heat, the seat ventilation cools down in just one minute. The rear space is generous, and when taking my parents to Malacca for a trip, they sat for three hours without any complaints of discomfort. The dual-zone air conditioning plus rear independent vents allow everyone in the family to set a comfortable temperature. The wooden trim on the dashboard and the crystal gear lever always earn compliments like "such a premium feel" from friends when they get in the car. I genuinely love it more the longer I use it! Overall, this car is worry-free to drive in Malaysia in terms of safety and performance, and its interior is definitely the "benchmark" in its class. I highly recommend it to families who value comfort and safety!

Sure! Here is the translation of your content: As the owner of a 2018 XC60 T8 Inscription and having driven it in Malaysia for almost five years, I am most satisfied with the interior and safety features! The interior uses soft leather and wood-grain trim, which feel particularly high-quality to the touch. The crystal gear lever on the center console feels very premium every time I touch it. The dual-zone air conditioning is especially practical in Kuala Lumpur's hot weather, and the rear seats also have independent air vents, so when taking my family out, no one ever complains about the heat. Safety features are Volvo's strong point. I live in Selangor and often drive on the LDP highway, and the lane departure warning and automatic braking have been a great help — there was one time at the Damansara exit when a car suddenly changed lanes, and the automatic braking intervened directly, truly saving my life. The 360-degree camera is super convenient for parking in the narrow alleys of Kuala Lumpur, and I no longer worry about scratching nearby cars. I would rate the performance 4 out of 5 because the hybrid system is particularly smooth in the city, with quick acceleration — when the light turns green, I am often the first to rush out. However, on the highway, when going above 120 km/h, further acceleration feels a bit sluggish. Still, since Malaysia's highway speed limit is 110, it is actually sufficient. Overall, this car is really suitable for driving in Malaysia, as it is both safe and comfortable!

As the owner of a 2018 Volvo XC60 T8 Inscription who has been driving it in Malaysia for over two years, I like it more and more the longer I drive it! First, let's talk about the performance—it’s simply amazing. The hybrid system combined with T8’s power allows the pure electric mode to be quiet and fuel-efficient during the morning rush hour traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur. Once on the North-South Expressway or the highways to Johor Bahru, stepping on the throttle gives you an instant pushback feeling that leaves other cars far behind, especially when climbing hills or overtaking. Its 0-100 km/h performance in 5.2 seconds is utterly reliable, and the all-wheel-drive system performs exceptionally well on rainy and slippery roads, giving a full sense of security. 5 stars, no problem at all! Regarding the exterior, the Scandinavian design of the XC60 is just my style. The Thor’s Hammer LED headlights are highly recognizable during the evenings in Penang, and the car's body lines are both sleek and dignified. Whenever I park near KLCC, there’s always someone turning their head to look. Driving this car either for client meetings or family trips feels very prestigious, a definite 5 stars! As for the interior, the overall quality is impeccable. The Nappa leather seats are comfortable to sit on, and the wooden trims on the center console feel very premium. However, there's a minor regret—the rear middle floor hump is slightly raised, so when three people sit in the back, the middle passenger might feel a bit cramped. Additionally, the car's infotainment system sometimes lags a little when used for a long time, so I’ll deduct one point and give it 4 stars. Overall though, I am still very satisfied!
