2019 Honda CR-V 2.0 2WD Review

As one of Malaysia's most popular C-Segment SUVs, the Honda CR-V has long been a top choice for family users—offering balanced features, reliable mechanical performance, and spaciousness. The 2019 2.0 2WD version aims to solidify its position as the "practical choice" in a competitive market. The main goal of our test this time is to evaluate the vehicle's actual performance in daily commuting, weekend family outings, and other scenarios, to see if it can truly meet Malaysian consumers' core needs for an SUV: "practicality, peace of mind, and comfort."
In terms of appearance, the 2019 CR-V 2.0 2WD continues with the family’s robust design style. The front features a large chrome grille paired with sharp LED headlights, giving it a highly recognizable look. The side profile has smooth lines, and the 17-inch alloy wheels are simple yet functional, aligning with the family SUV positioning. The LED taillight design incorporates horizontal elements that enhance the visual width at the rear without fully connecting across, giving it a stable yet modern aesthetic. As for lighting, the LED headlights, which come standard across all trims, are sufficiently bright, and the automatic headlight feature switches promptly in tunnels or at dusk, maximizing practicality.
Sitting inside, you'll first notice the solid materials used for the interior. The top of the dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, providing a decent texture. The 7-inch touch screen in the center console has a decent response speed—while it’s not the smoothest, it performs basic navigation and music operations without lag. The instrument panel features a full LCD design, displaying clear information such as fuel consumption and power output in real time. There are several highlights in terms of features: the front row has dual-zone automatic air conditioning, the back seat has independent air vents, and there’s even a 220V power outlet in the rear for charging electronic devices, which is very convenient. The driver’s seat supports electric adjustment, making it easy to find a comfortable sitting position. The rear seats can be split 60:40 and folded or manually adjusted for backrest angle, allowing passengers to recline slightly on long trips. In terms of storage, the trunk offers a standard capacity of 522L, which can be expanded by folding the rear seats down—enough for strollers, suitcases, and more. The front center armrest box and door storage compartments also provide ample room.
Space has always been a traditional strength of the CR-V. Its length of 4584mm and wheelbase of 2660mm provide ample seating space. After adjusting the front seat to a suitable driving position, there is still one and a half fists of space above the head for a passenger with a height of 175cm. The rear legroom exceeds two fists, ensuring comfort even for three adults sitting side by side. The center floor has a minimal hump, leaving enough room for the middle passenger's feet. Notably, there’s also a USB port located below the rear air conditioning vents, showcasing thoughtful attention to detail.
In terms of power, the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum output of 154PS and a peak torque of 190N·m. It is paired with a CVT transmission. During daily driving, acceleration is smooth, with a throttle response that isn't overly aggressive, but pressing harder gradually generates sufficient power. The acceleration process is linear, making it suitable for family use. In SPORT mode, the throttle becomes more responsive, instilling more confidence during overtaking. The CVT transmission performs adequately, with no noticeable jerks during gear changes. However, there’s a slight "rubber band" sensation during rapid acceleration, though it doesn’t impact daily usability.
In terms of handling and chassis, the steering wheel has a moderate amount of steering effort and fairly precise directionality, making it not feel cumbersome to drive; the front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension is tuned towards comfort, effectively filtering out most of the small bumps on the road, and the vibrations when going over speed bumps are not too stiff. However, during high-speed cornering, there is a bit of body roll, but this is normal for an SUV. Regarding fuel consumption, we tested it in mixed urban and highway conditions, and the combined fuel consumption was about 8.2L per 100km, slightly higher than the official 7.3L. However, considering the relatively congested road conditions in Malaysia, this fuel consumption performance is still acceptable.
In terms of ride comfort, noise control is pretty good. When driving within 80 km/h, wind and tire noise are relatively minimal, though wind noise becomes slightly noticeable at higher speeds, but it doesn't affect conversations inside the car. The seat wrapping is average, but the padding is quite soft, making long-distance travel not too tiring. It's worth mentioning that the electronic handbrake and auto-hold functions are very practical when waiting at traffic lights, freeing up the right foot.
In terms of safety features, this car is equipped with six airbags as standard, ABS, vehicle stability control, forward collision warning, lane change assist, as well as front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system, making parking very convenient. With a minimum ground clearance of 198mm, its off-road capability is decent, and it can handle occasional rough roads without any issues.
Overall, the 2019 Honda CR-V 2.0 2WD's core strengths lie in its spacious interior, rich features, and reliable mechanical performance. Compared to its class competitor, the Toyota RAV4 2.0G, the CR-V has more comprehensive features (such as a fully LCD instrument panel and a 220V rear power outlet) while being similarly priced, offering better value for money. When compared to the Mazda CX-5 2.0, the CR-V offers more interior space, making it more suitable for family use.
All in all, this car is well-suited for families who value space, features, and reliability. It can easily meet the needs of daily commutes and weekend family outings. However, young people seeking a more thrilling driving experience might find its power insufficient, but for most family usage scenarios, it is more than adequate.
In conclusion, the 2019 Honda CR-V 2.0 2WD is a "no obvious shortfall" family SUV. Its well-rounded performance makes it a practical choice for family users—if you need a car with ample space, comprehensive features, and easy drivability, it’s worth considering.
